Scaring people has never been this much fun with Haunted Hollow, the new game from Firaxis and 2K Games. Build rooms in your mansion and house devilish, yet amazingly cute creatures as you battle against a rival mansion’s monsters to rule the local township in fear. Each battle will surely be a test of how well you can manage your resources, but it is assured that each turn will be fun and enjoyable, with the townspeople stuck in between, and gripped in fear in the process.
Gameplay
Haunted Hollow requires players to launch a scare attack against the townspeople. You must also face off against an opponent who is trying to do the same thing. To this effect, you must do battle against the enemy by destroying his monsters while trying to take over as many houses as you can. The player that is able to scare and control the most houses will be declared the winner. This will require good management of Fear Points as well as being able to build and order the right monsters around for both scaring and fighting actions.
Fear Points
Fear Points serve as energy within the game, and these are required in order to perform most actions such as building additional rooms, building monsters, as well as asking them to move around, attack, and scare people. Typically, the more Fear Points you spend, the better the action, but this will also deplete your resources faster and limit your moves per turn, so you must balance between both wants and needs.
Players are provided with five Fear Points per turn, but performing certain actions such as controlling a neighborhood in fear or using certain types of monsters may provide you with even more, allowing you to do more actions during your turn.
Rooms
Rooms are required in order to create monsters within the game. Players are given the opportunity to create rooms for free each turn, with each additional room costing one Fear Point thereafter. Different types of rooms will create different monsters, so you must take note of what rooms build what monsters to find success in this game. Additionally, rooms can be “extended” so that they will be able to create higher level monsters, with level 1, 2, and 3 monsters available depending on the size of the rooms that you have built.
Monsters
Monsters are what you will use to control the townspeople. Monsters are divided into either Scary, Fighty, or Special monsters, with some having characteristics of one or more classes. Scary monsters are used to scare the neighborhood, Fighty monsters are used to attack other monsters, while Special monsters have different abilities for offensive, defensive, or support services.
Each monster also has different statistics which may include attack damage, health, movement range, as well as one or more skills. Fear Points are used whenever monsters are ordered to move, and Fear Points are also consumed when monsters perform actions, although some skills are also passive and can only be activated when some conditions have been met, such as when they have killed other monsters or if they have been attacked.
Having the right combination of monsters as well as the expertise to use them properly is integral in winning battles, so you must be adept at using whatever monsters are available to you. You can also select what monsters you would like to bring with you at the beginning of the game, although monsters outside of the default ones will require in-app purchases.
Stars
In lieu of a leveling up system, Haunted Hollow uses Stars rather than experience points to level up. Also, leveling up only takes place within a game, and will not be carried over all throughout. Stars can be earned by scaring townspeople and attacking creatures, and this will also allow you to get a free item to use. Items will be unlocked and made available for use depending on the player’s current level.
The Mob
When players scare houses, a thermometer would slowly start to rise. When this meter fills up, the town church will open and an angry mob will come out. The mob acts like a monster that will attack any and all monsters that it can get their hands on. The mob also has high attack and health, although this can be defeated with a few strikes from powerful monsters. However, a better strategy would be to move away and have the mob attack the enemy rather than face it head on.
Store
The Store is where players will be able to purchase and unlock special items such as new houses that can build monsters of different types and quantities, new and more powerful monsters, as well as consumables. Almost all items here require in-app purchases, which means that you would need real money to require them. Although purchases are not really necessary, this will add more value into the game, so it is recommended that you make these purchases if you have the budget for it.
Items
As mentioned, items will provide players with advantages throughout the game, such as providing them with increased movement, replenished health, and it can also help deal damage to enemies. However, items can only be acquired once players level up, and each item can only be used once per game.
Items do not require Fear Points in order to be used, which is why this is a very important resource, especially when you know exactly where, when, and to whom you would like to use your items on.
Challenges
Challenges are a form of tutorial within the game, which will teach you exactly how to play Haunted Hollow so that you can make the most out of your campaigns. You will be guided by Igor, your loyal assistant, and star rankings will be provided in order to gauge your performance for each level. It is recommended that you play the challenge levels first before you start actually playing so that you will be better acquainted with the mechanics and controls.
