1. Introduction and Controls
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter games is the latest entry in
the long-running Mario & Sonic Olympic series. This entry uses both the Wii
remote (MotionPlus IS required) and the GamePad for input. Much of the game is
controlled by tilting the controllers to make the characters move left and
right, but there is other input as well.

Because the controls depend entirely on the event and buttons are rarely used
at all, I’m not going to have a control list in this section like I usually do
in my guides. Instead you can find the controls that pertain to each specific
event as you get to them.

2. Single Match
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
This is the main mode of gameplay. In this mode, you compete in the
different events to earn medals. The events are separated out into two
distinct categories.

Because the Legends Showdown has you play through all the events and
requires some strategy, I go into them in much more detail in that
section. Please refer to the Legends Showdown area if you are having
troubles with a specific event.

4. Legends Showdown
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Selecting this mode splits up different teams comprised of various characters
from the universes of both Mario and Sonic. These teams then compete against
shadow clones of themselves in different events.

This mode is separated into different areas that sees the various characters
competing against shadow clones of themselves in the different Olympic events
that are available.

By performing well in the events, you will earn points. These points are
added together at the end of each area. You will then be assigned a letter
grade based on your points. Earning an A+ grade will unlock new outfits for
your Mii.

Below each area is the list of characters that can be used for that specific
area.

======
AREA 1
======
Donkey Kong, Sonic, Tails, Yoshi

———————-
ALPINE SKIING DOWNHILL
———————-
RECOMMENDED: Sonic
Sonic is a pretty good choice for most of the events that he’s available. In
Alpine Skiin Downhill, you’re simply using a Wii remote and tilting it to the
left and right, with the goal of moving in between the flags to give your
character a speed boost.

——————
SPEED SKATING 500M
——————
RECOMMENDED: Sonic
Again, Sonic is probably the best for this one as well. In this event, first
hold the Wii Remote near your chest. When it says “GO!”, swing the Wii remote
in a downward slash. Then shake it to the left and right as quickly as possible
to build up initial speed.

At that point, an arc will pop up on the screen. Swing the Wii remote from
the left to right in time with the light as it bounces on the arc. This arc
meter will disappear near the end of the event, so just keep the rhythm that
you’ve hopefully learned by practicing when the meter was visible.

—————
SNOWBOARD CROSS
—————
RECOMMENDED: Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong has good acceleration as well as good cornering. This event has to
be played using the GamePad. What you do is tilt the GamePad from the left and
right to control Donkey Kong. Flip the GamePad in an upward motion to make
Donkey Kong jump just at the peak of ramps for a speed boost. Try to cut
corners on the corners to get ahead.

———-
ICE HOCKEY
———-
Team DONKEY KONG vs. Team BIRDO
Hockey plays like you’d imagine. Whoever is closest to the puck will be who you
are controlling. Press A to try to steal the puck, B to pass, and A to shoot
the puck as well. As you play, you’ll notice a meter is building up based on
passing, going for shots, and having possession of the puck. When this
meter is full, you can perform a Power Shot.

To perform a Power Shot, press A when prompted. Then look at the GamePad
screen. Use the touchscreen to flick the puck in the direction that you want,
preferrably at a part of the net that is not being covered well by the goalie
for the best chance at a goal.

======
AREA 2
======
Amy, Knuckles, Waluigi, Wario

———————-
FIGURE SKATING SINGLES
———————-
RECOMMENDED: Knuckles
First, choose the song that you want to skate to. Then swing the Wii remote
in rhythm with the arcs as they appear on the screen. Do so with the right
timing will build up points. When the arcs are red, hold B while swinging the
remote.

There will be other actions to take in this event as well. To jump, wait
until your skater is on the red icon on the ground. Then spin the Wii remote in
a circular motion. For spinning, spin the Wii remote in a quick circular
motion, but be sure when you have to pose that you get the Wii remote in the
correct position fast enough so the skater isn’t still spinning.

——–
BIATHLON
——–
RECOMMENDED: Knuckles
This event is separated into two distinct sections. First of all, there is a
bit of skiing, including uphill. Mash on B to get a boost. If the stamina is
drained completely, then you will be screwed, but you can still mash B quite a
bit without much consequence.

The second part of the event is a shooting range. Put down the Wii remote and
pick up the GamePad. Aim the GamePad at the TV screen and look on the GamePad
screen to aim. Shoot the targets. Try to be fast, but also try to hit the
center as best as you can. The faster you complete the shooting range
sections, the faster you can get back to the skiing.

In total, you have to do three skiing sections and two shooting range sections.
Your overall performance will be combined at the end to determine the winner of
the event.

——–
SKELETON
——–
RECOMMENDED: Amy
Alternate between ZL and ZR quickly, and then complete the on-screen motions to
start it off. Swing the GamePad up when you reach the red line, and then it is
just a matter of tilting the GamePad to try to keep your racer in the boosts
on the course.

———————–
BULLET BILL SLEDGE RACE
———————–
RECOMMENDED: Knuckles & Wario
Holding ZL controls the left Bullet Bill and holding ZR controls the right
Bullet Bill. However, you should just hold in both triggers at all times for
this one. Once again, control comes from tilting. Swing the GamePad up at
the top of jumps (hit as many ramps as possible — they always lead to the
faster route) and collect the blue orbs for boosts.

======
AREA 3
======
Daisy, Luigi, Shadow, Vector

—————
4-MAN BOBSLEIGH
—————
LEADER: Daisy
Rapidly alternate betwee ZL and ZR to build up initial speed. Then swing the
GamePad with an upward motion when you reach the red line. At that point,
tell your team which way to lean by holding in ZL and ZR. ZL tells them to
lean left, ZR tells them to lean right. This will help you get around corners
with ramming the bobsleigh into the sides.

Like other events, the boosts on the ground are very important. The longer
that you stay within the boosts, the more speed you can build up.

——————
SNOWBALL SCRIMMAGE
——————
RECOMMENDED: Luigi & Shadow
The goal of this is to get the ball in the center to the hole on your side of
the map. I recommend playing as Shadow and making the COM (or second player)
play as Luigi. Have the com/2P worry about the ball while you just belt your
opponents with snowballs.

To lock onto an enemy, press B. Then tap A to fire the snowballs. When their
health meter is depleted, they will respawn, but it will take a few seconds.

——-
CURLING
——-
Team DAISY vs. Team DAISY
There are two rounds of curling. You can “strategize” using the GamePad, but
that’s pretty pointless. Keep the GamePad nearby anyway, though, as it shows
you the positioning of the stones at the end of the board.

To throw the stone, hold B and swing up. The meter on the right will show you
the strength of your swing, so keep an eye on that. You can tilt the remote to
the left or right to then manipulate the swerve of the stone if you want.

Shake the Wii remote from the left and right rapidly to slow down the stone.
The goal is to not only get your stone on the board and in the end (or center),
but to knock your opponent’s stones off the board as well.

———————-
SNOW DAY STREET HOCKEY
———————-
Team DAISY vs. Team DAISY
This time, you have three different areans to choose from for hockey, each
coming with their own little gimmicks. You have to play two times on two
different arenas, so just pick one, and then the game plays very similarly to
how it did in the last hockey event, except with those added gimmicks that
can change things up some.

——————————-
SNOWBOARD PARALLEL GIANT SLALOM
——————————-
RECOMMENDED: Shadow
The goal here is to be on the side of the flag that the arrows are pointing.
However, moving THROUGH the flag will give you a speed boost. Try to hit as
many flags as possible, but if you can’t hit a flag, just make sure you are
on the correct side so you don’t get a time penalty at the end of the run.

======
AREA 4
======
Blaze, Mario, Peach, Silver

———————–
FREESTYLE SKIING MOGULS
———————–
RECOMMENDED: Mario
Tilt the remote from the left and right based on the direction of the arrows on
the ground as you reach them. Fling the remote upward when you reach the top of
a ramp and hit the red line.

———————
GROOVE PIPE SNOWBOARD
———————
RECOMMENDED: Mario
There are certain sections of the track that will leave boosting paths on them.
During the subsequent laps, it is integral to hit these boosts in order to get
ahead and maintain your lead.

——————–
FIGURE SKATING PAIRS
——————–
RECOMMENDED: Blaze & Mario
There’s a lot of similar motions as in the regular figure skating. In pairs,
you also have to hold the remote to your side and hold A to hold hands when
prompted. There’s also a lot more posing involved, as well as spinning of
your partner.

——————-
HOLE-IN-ONE CURLING
——————-
RECOMMENDED: Mario & Peach
The basics of curling are applied to the concept of golf. Try to get to the
goal with as few shots as possible. Throw the stone, then tilt the GamePad to
manipulate the movement of the stone.

——————————-
SHORT TRACK SPEED SKATING 1000M
——————————-
RECOMMENDED: Blaze
Tilt the Wii remote to turn, hold B for quick turning. Hit the boosts to build
up speed.

======
AREA 5
======
Bowser, Bowser Jr., Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic

——————-
FREESTYLE SKI CROSS
——————-
RECOMMENDED: Bowser
Easily the hardest event out of this area, you have very little room for
error here. Lift the remote up at the top of jumps, bring it down right
before hitting the ground for a speed boost. Try to stay away from the
drifts at the corners, but if you are lagging behind, try to clip the
flags on the corners for an extra boost.

——————–
SNOWBOARD SLOPESTYLE
——————–
RECOMMENDED: Bowser Jr.
The point of this one is to complete the event fast but also perform
tricks and earn a lot of points. There are usually three rails at a
time that can be hit, with different difficulty ratings (indicated by
the stars above them) that will result in more points.

When grinding, simply keep the GamePad steady to hold your balance.
Swipe in the direction of the arrows on the GamePad when in the air to
perform the tricks. Having a rough landing will result in losing a ton of
points, so be careful about that.

————————–
FIGURE SKATING SPECTACULAR
————————–
RECOMMENDED: Bowser
You can choose between Mario or Sonic’s. This is figure skating but with
a story and it’s much longer than before.

———————-
SKI JUMPING LARGE HILL
———————-
RECOMMENDED: Bowser Jr.
Wait for the wind to be blowing fairly hard, then swing the remote down.
When you reach the yellow part of the ramp, hold B to start building a
boost. Release it at the top of the jump and bring the remote up.

In the air, try to go to the middle of the wind currents. You can tell if
you’re in the middle or not if the top of the current is glittering.
You get two chances to surpass the red line, which indicates where your
opponent landed.

————————
ROLLER COASTER BOBSLEIGH
————————
RECOMMENDED: Bowser Jr.
A one-man bobsleigh race. It starts out just like the others. Try to
build up a boost a bit before it actually starts to get ahead. Try to
hit as many boosts as possible, and when in the air and about to hit a
slope, angle the bobsleigh so that it matches with the angle to get
another speed boost.

===========================
WINTER SPORTS CHAMPION RACE
===========================
RECOMMENDED: Any
This race combines all the different events from before, or at least the
tools used to complete the events. Stay on terrain appropriate to your
tool (i.e. don’t use a snowboard on ice). Each lap will give you a
chance to switch your tool.

This is a quiz show set-up for up to four players. It takes you around to the
different events and tries to see how well you do in specific gameplay
situations or asks you what you would do in it.

There are three different difficulties and there are three different time
limits to choose from as well
