Announced and released in the SAME DAY, NES Remix is a downloadable game from
the Wii U eShop. The premise is that it takes classic NES titles and completely
flips them on their heads by adding new challenges and playable characters.

1. Introduction and Controls
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The Nintendo Entertainment System controller is comprised of hardly any
buttons. There’s the d-pad, A, B, SELECT, and START. Because of this, all that
is required of the games are that amount of buttons to be used.
The controls can translate exactly from the NES originals to the GamePad. You
can use the GamePad’s d-pad for movement, and the GamePad’s B and A the same
as the NES’s B and A. That being said, X is also equal to B and Y is equal to
A in the game as well. You can also use the left stick for control. Start and
Select remain the same.
There are a variety of different NES games from many genres that are used in
NES Remix. Because of this, the controls can differ greatly depending on which
Remix you are playing. Specific control information for each level will be
provided as it is relevant throughout the guide.

2. Remixes
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
Remixes are the different games represented, each of which have their own
levels that offer challenges that the original games did not. Some levels
even contain multiple challenges within themselves.
The challenges will rise in difficulty after each level is completed. Players
earn up to three stars based on how quickly they complete each level. If you
have to use a continue in the middle of the level, then you can only earn a
maximum of one star. Levels that restart to the beginning of the level after
you lose all your lives will still make you eligible to earn three stars even
if you use a continue.
Other points are earned based on three different factors. The first factor is
completing the stage. The second factor is whether or not it was your first
time playing through the stage. And finally, the third factor is whether or
not you completed the stage with a perfect run. If you replay the level in
the future, you can gain bonus points for beating your high score as well.
Completing stages quickly as well as completing them perfectly will earn you
rainbow stars. Stars unlock new levels, whereas the other points fill up a
meter. Every time that meter is filled up, you will unlock a new stamp to use
in Miiverse. If you unlock all the stars in the game, you will get a gold
frame around the game, whereas if you unlock all the rainbow stars in the
game, you will unlock a rainbow frame.
Each game has a video that you can watch before playing any of the levels
that gives a brief explanation on how to control the characters for each
game.

REMIX I
=======
All of these Remix stages are unlocked by earning a certain amount of stars,
whereas the stages for the other categories (those based on specific games),
are unlocked simply by completing the stage that comes before it. The Remixes
mix and match classic games while offering crazy twists on classics from the
NES era.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
If you are familiar with Super Mario Bros., you probably notice that this
stage doesn’t look exactly like you remember. Mario is permanently invincible
in this stage, so just kill 15 enemies to satisfy that requirement.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
Based on Donkey Kong, this level makes the entire stage pitch black. There are
hazards such as barrels and fireballs. Don’t bother grabbing the hammer. Just
jump over the barrels and use the ladders like usual to get to the top, but
be a bit slower because you can’t see anything because of the dark.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Endless Runner Mario? Hell yeah! At the very beginning, just let Mario run
forward and hit the steps to make him stop running. This will cause the fish
that will be jumping up later to jump in an order that will allow you to
actually complete the level. All you need to do with Mario in this stage is
press A to make him jump whenever necessary because of gaps and what-not.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
Based on Mario Bros., you control both of the Mario Bros. at the same time.
However, just focus on one and use him to gather all the coins. It is just a
shore trying to manage both and you should be able to get all of the coins
fast enough just focusing on one of them.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Donkey Kong Jr., this stage has the basic goal of getting to the top of the
level like you do in Donkey Kong Jr. typically, but with the added gimmick that
the stage will sometimes become completely dark so you can’t see where you’re
going. The enemies are still visible thankfully, so you can still dodge them
just as well.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Balloon Fight time. All the enemies disguise themselves as you. The way that
you can tell yourself apart from them is because you have two balloons to
start with and they still only have one. When their balloon is popped, they
turn back to their original form as they parachute to the ground, but be sure
to knock them out still.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Defeat all the enemies, but keep in mind that the slower you do this, the
more the camera pulls back, revealing endless amounts of the same scene, which
can become incredibly disorienting. Every time you knock out an enemy, the
camera zooms in a little bit.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
What if you had to play the first level of the original Super Mario Bros. in
pitch darkness? Well, now that question is answered! This is literally the
first level from the original Super Mario Bros., except the background is
pitch black. This causes the enemies to blend in with everything as well as
the objects and all that jazz. It makes harder to dodge enemies, but everything
is in the same spot as it always is, so Mario veterans should be able to
breeze through this stage without much problem.
——-
STAGE 9
——-
Now what if Excitebike was in the dark? The light comes from the headlight
on the front of the bike. If you stay in the second lane you can actually see
all the lanes pretty perfectly, so I recommend sticking here, only moving out
of it to hit ramps, build up turbo, and avoid mud spots. Otherwise just stay
in the second lane as much as possible for the safest possible way to make a
lap once around the track
——–
STAGE 10
——–
World 4-1 from Super Mario Bros., except covered in ice! This is similar to
the Endless Runner Mario level from before because the ice means that Mario is
constantly moving, and you mainly have to worry about keep him from dying by
utilizing his jump. The difference is that you can actually move backwards in
this stage, though there’s rarely a reason to beyond getting a power-up to make
it at least a little bit easier if you’re having troubles.
——–
STAGE 11
——–
Remember that Mario Bros., stage where the camera kept zooming out? This is
now Balloon Fight, except the camera is constantly zooming in! You have to
collect 6 balloons while having to deal with the camera zooming in. Collecting
a balloon will make the camera zoom out a little bit so that you can see better
and popping bubbles has the same effect.
——–
STAGE 12
——–
Mario Bros. again, this time with the goal of defeating all the enemies while
also keeping them from getting to Luigi. Basically, if they get to the bottom
level, then Luigi is screwed. The stage begins with only a couple of enemies,
but more spawn from the top of the level that you have to worry about as well.
——–
STAGE 13
——–
This stage combines a bunch of the different stages that we’ve experienced so
far in the game. It starts out with Mario Bros. and the goal of collecting
the three coins before the time runs out. The camera is constantly pulling
back, which is the challenge here. Jump up to the platform on the right and
grab the first coin, then walk off the screen to come up on the opposite side
of the screen and get the two coins that fall here.
Phase two switches to Super Mario Bros., except dark style. There are three
coins to collect again and the timer is running out. As you can see, there
are four sets of bricks. The set of bricks on the right will have a mushroom
in it, so collect the other three coins by hitting the blocks in the middle.
Phase three is Balloon Fight with the camera zooming in again. However, there
is an added twist to collecting the three balloons. You cannot move the
character using the control stick. Instead you have to just mash on the B
button to make him flap his arms and collect the balloons that way. Think of
it as a not-so-Endless Balloon Fight!
And finally, this mix tape of sorts concludes with invincible Mario and the
goal of defeating 10 enemies before the time runs out. It is on the stage with
the flying fish, so it makes it marginally more difficult to take out 10
enemies.
——–
STAGE 14
——–
With Mario being the start most of the time, I guess Nintendo wanted to
celebrate the Year of Luigi a bit with NES Remix and having Luigi be the star
of a few of the remixes. The first one flips Donkey Kong on its head by
mirroring the typical Donkey Kong stage and having Luigi climb to the top to
save Mario. It plays exactly like Donkey Kong, albeith with the roles of the
characters switched up a bit.
——–
STAGE 15
——–
Luigi’s version of Mario Bros. is pretty damn different than the original
version because you can see the screens constantly repeating. What you need to
do is defeat all the enemies, but the ice-covered platforms makes that a pretty
daunting task.
What you need to do is immediately head to the right. Slide on the ice to the
bottom floor and then hit the POW block. Knock out the first enemy, then wait
for the crab to go by and jump up to the left to take out the other two
enemies. The crab just needs to be hit one more time until he’s knockout ready,
so get that done and then take him out.
——–
STAGE 16
——–
World 1-2 from the original Super Mario Bros. now starring Luigi and in
mirrored form. Do NOT go to the Warp Zone, as tempting as that might be,
because the goal is to reach the goal pole of the actual level and not warp
ahead a few worlds.
——–
STAGE 17
——–
Another Luigi Donkey Kong, with the same goal. Once at the top, it shifts to
the second phase where you have to get back to the bottom at the starting
point of the stage.
——–
STAGE 18
——–
Endless Luigi Runner! This takes place on World 5-1 of the original Super
Mario Bros.
——–
STAGE 19
——–
Excitebike on ice! The only thing the ice means is that turbo is just
constantly happening the entire time. You have to hit EVERY SINGLE turbo boost
pad on the ground to lower the temp of your bike. Failing to do this a single
time will cause your bike to overheat and automatically cost you the stage.
——–
STAGE 20
——–
Defeat all the enemies in Balloon Fight while simultaneously dealing with the
camera zooming out.
——–
STAGE 21
——–
In Mario Bros., it seems that some fake enemies have infiltrated the sewer
system. The fake ones cannot kill you and you cannot hurt them. Knock over the
real ones, and their fake counterparts will fall down as well. Knocking out the
real version of the enemies will get rid of their fake ones.
——–
STAGE 22
——–
Super Mario Bros., except the platforms and everything will constantly be
disappearing and reappearing to make it a bit more challenging. Just keep
looking ahead at places you can jump when the lights go out so that you can
continue to make progress even when you can’t really see where you’re going at
the time.
——–
STAGE 23
——–
You have your clone again, and this time the goal is to defeat all the enemies.
Hit the POW block, and then take out the first enemy with the Mario on the
right. Then use the Mario on the left to jump up onto the platforms and start
taking out the rest of the enemies that remain.
——–
STAGE 24
——–
While making your way to the goal pole, a giant and invincible Bullet Bill
will randomly show up on a part of the screen. This stage has to do with luck
at least a little bit. The best thing you can do is to stay as far back as
possible when you hear the Bullet Bill coming to give you more time to
react and possibly avoid it.
——–
STAGE 25
——–
Another mash-up of a bunch of the game styles played previously. The first
one is based on Balloon Fight. The goal is to pop two bubbles. This is done
easily by simply moving to the left and coming out on the right side of the
screen, right where the bubbles happen to be.
Next up is Super Mario Bros. with the disappearing platforms. Collect all the
coins. You should easily be able to memorize where the platforms are, but the
time limit gives you plenty of time even if you decide to wait for the
platforms to reappear before going after all of the coins.
The third phase is a weird version of Excitebike that kind of looks like what
the game would resemble if it was played on the radar of a submarine. The
goal here is just to knock down five rivals. It plays exactly the same as the
other Excitebike levels, just with the new visual filter.
The fourth phase is another one based on Super Mario Bros. It is the Endless
Runner level with the flying fish, but with the added stipulation that you
have to collect 20 coins to finish. Don’t break your neck trying to pick up
every single coin along the way. Get the ones that you jump into without the
risk of being hit by enemy fish!
The fifth phase is Luigi in Donkey Kong. The lights are out and Donkey Kong
is throwing barrels. Move to the left so you can get close to the barrels as
they are coming down the scaffolding. Jump over three barrels in order to
proceed to the sixth and final phase.
Luigi is invincible in this phase and the goal is to kill Bowser. The only way
Luigi can fail here is if he falls into a bottomless pit and dies that way.
Everything else will do absolutely no damage to Luigi, so as long as you have
your jumps down, just get to Bowser and run right into him to get rid of him!

========
REMIX II
========
——-
STAGE 1
——-
The screen will get all pixelated and then revert back to normal. Your goal
is simply to make it through the door in phase one. Avoid the enemies and then
get through the door. If the pixelation makes it too hard for you to see where
you’re going, then wait for the picture to return to normal before you proceed.
Phase 2 puts Link in the role of Mario in the classic Donkey Kong game. Link
is at a disadvantage because he can’t jump like Mario (he is, after all, NOT
the “Jump”man). Because of this, you need to use the ladders to avoid the
barrels instead of jumping.
Immediately leave the first floor of the structure as a fireball will pop out
and make life extremely difficult for Link. Climb the ladder at the far end of
the structure to reach the second floor. At this point, go to the ladder at
the far left because barrels won’t go down that ladder, allowing you to safely
wait on the middle of the ladder and avoid being hit by any of the barrels that
are coming.
At the top of the structure, wait for Donkey Kong to throw a barrel straight
down. This will give you the time needed to get to the ladder and save the
fair maiden by climbing to the tippy top!
——-
STAGE 2
——-
Donkey Kong Jr. time. This is exactly like the first stage from Donkey Kong
Jr., but with the added threat that most of the screen is completely pitch
black for most of the level, obviously putting you at a disadvantage.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Just go around and smash all the walls. Wait until you’ve destroyed all of the
walls before breaking the ladders just in case you forget to break a wall or
two.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
Invincible Mario in World 8-1. Sprint through the world and get to the goal
pole at the end.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Balloon Fight, with the goal of killing all of the enemies that are on the
screen. However, the difference is that there is a second player running
around at the bottom of the screen that you have to make sure doesn’t get
hurt. Since they are so low to the ground, it’s pretty unlikely that they will
get hurt anyways.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Upside-down Mario Bros. The POW block is fairly useless, but if you can knock
out a couple of enemies with it, then more power to you. Otherwise, just work
on taking out the rest of the enemies.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Collect fruit in Ice Climber. The only difference here is that the screen will
sometimes flash to a different art style, like what Ice Climber would look
like if you played it on the Game Boy or the Virtual Boy.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
Super Mario Bros. World 1-3. This stage has the pixelation gimmick that the
very first stage in Remix II had. It’s easier to continue playing in Super
Mario Bros. than in The Legend of Zelda, so you should still be able to
fairly easily reach the end of the level without having to stop and wait for
the pixelation to subside at all.
——–
STAGE 10
——–
Pinball with the goal of getting 10,000 points. The gimmick here is that there
is lava on the bottom of the screen, meaning that even though you are playing
on the second half of the table, the ball can’t go below the flippers or it
will hit the lava and you fail.
——–
STAGE 11
——–
Donkey Kong with the goal of getting to the top of the structure…except those
annoying bounce pads from earlier are constantly falling out of the sky in the
area where you last stood. So not only do you have to worry about avoiding and
jumping over barrels, but you also have to be aware of the bounce pads.
——–
STAGE 12
——–
Mirrored Excitebike. This is easy enough. Just complete two laps, but with
reversed controls.
——–
STAGE 13
——–
The first phase is based on Donkey Kong and is pretty easy. Donkey Kong will
throw a barrel straight down. Move a little to the right so that your hammer
hits the barrel as it is zig-zagging across the screen.
The second phase is based on Super Mario Bros. The screen will turn everything
dark so that you can’t really see much, but you can still see the outlines of
objects. Kill the two Hammer Bros. and then hit the coin block, which is the
item block on the left. Be looking there so you can memorize where the item
block is before the lights go out and make it so you can’t see anything.
The third phase is based on Ice Climber. There are three vegetables to collect
and the screen will sometimes change to show you what Ice Climber would look
like if it was released on the original Game Boy handheld. Collect the three
vegetables to continue. I recommend going for the one on the left first, then
the right one on the right, and then the one that is above as last.
Finally, the fourth phase is another one based on Super Mario Bros. The level
has been turned to ice, and the goal is to collect 20 coins. Lakitu will be
throwing spiked enemies from above. You need to hit most of the coin blocks
as well as get most of the coins floating in the air to succeed at this.
——–
STAGE 14
——–
In this take on Mario Bros., the screen is constantly scrolling. The same
rules apply, but this does make seeing what you’re doing somewhat more
difficult than usual. The goal here is to just defeat all the enemies.
——–
STAGE 15
——–
Pop all 20 balloons in Balloon Fight. The camera will be constantly zooming
back to make this one a little tougher.
——–
STAGE 16
——–
Golf with various weather conditions that makes it a bit more difficult than
the golf from earlier.
——–
STAGE 17
——–
Ice Climber in the dark. The goal here is to reach the bonus stage. To get to
the bonus stage in Ice Climber, just get to the top of this level.
——–
STAGE 18
——–
In the bonus portion of Pinball, the goal is to save Pauline by making the
number panels the same colors. The longer they’re the same colors, the quicker
you can save Pauline.
In this twist on that, there are three balls, but only one of them is the
real ball. Do not worry about trying to keep the other balls on the board as
they do absolutely nothing and cannot be eliminated anyway. Just worry about
the real ball.
If you lose track of the real ball, you can figure out which one it is again
because whenever it touches Mario, it will make a sound. When the floor beneath
Pauline gives way, catch her and carry her safely to one of the exits on either
side of the screen.
——–
STAGE 19
——–
Wrecking Crew with the camera zooming out. Break as many walls as possible
until the camera makes it nearly impossible to play the game. At that point,
break one of the two ladders. Breaking the ladders will cause the camera too
zoom all the way back in. Save the second ladder for later.
——–
STAGE 20
——–
Another Zelda level. Once again, the screen becomes so pixelated that it is
nearly impossible to see what you’re doing. Rush to the mysterious entrance to
get out of this pixelated nonsense.
The second phase is Donkey Kong, but with Link in the role of Mario again.
The goal is to remove all the pegs on the blue structure that Donkey Kong is
standing on to make him fall from the top of the structure. You should even
be able to grab all the collectibles along the way with no problem. Do your
best to avoid the fireballs.
——–
STAGE 21
——–
This stage tasks you with completing an entire level of Super Mario Bros. in
the dark. Stick to the upper parts of the level so that you don’t get killed
by Goombas blending in with the dark scenery.
——–
STAGE 22
——–
Clu Clu Land is back, but this time with a super zoomed-in camera that makes
completing the patterns more difficult than it was previously.
——–
STAGE 23
——–
Dark Balloon Fight. Eliminating as many enemies as possible before they
get their balloons popped up is essential here. If you haven’t gotten rid of
at least two before taking off yourself, you might as well restart.
——–
STAGE 24
——–
In this stage, you control two Ice Climber characters at the same time. Try to
keep them as close together as possible. If one of them dies, it is game over.
It is easier to take care of both of them in terms of keeping them from
falling to their death and making sure no enemies get them.
——–
STAGE 25
——–
Jump off of the platform that you’re standing on and bounce off of the spring.
Move the stick to the right and you should be able to land right on the
moving platform to complete the first phase. For the second phase, just look
where the brick is obviously sticking out of the wall. When the lights go
out, there will be a white line above that area. Go to the brick and jump into
the bottom of it to collect the hidden coin.
In phase three, the goal is to defeat two crabs, but there are four crabs (aka
two of the crabs are fake). To make matters worse, a green fireball shows up
at the bottom level almost immediately. To beat this one, hit the POW block
first, then focus on the crabs that come down on the left side. These two will
be the real ones. Knock them both over and then jump on their lever and knock
them completely out of the stage.
In phase four, it’s Ice Climber time. You are once again controlling two of
them simultaneously. Have the one on the upper level drop down a level. Hit the
enemy here with a mallet and then use these two to smash away at the ice blocks
above them until 20 blocks of ice have been destroyed.
In phase five, it’s back to Donkey Kong. Just move to the right of the screen
and grab the purse before the time runs out. Phase six brings you back to
Balloon Fight. You have to pop the first five balloons that you see before
the time runs out and you CAN’T miss any balloons.
Phase seven is about beating Bowser in the ice castle. Just move to the right
and Mario should be going fast enough for you to easily dodge the fire and
other hazards. When you reach Bowser’s room, slow down a bit and then wait for
Bowser to jump up. Slide underneath him and hit the axe to defeat him.
The final phase is a boss fight against Giant Bowser. It is actually incredibly
easy. Wait for him to jump into the area, then run under him and hit the axe
for the victory!

===========
DONKEY KONG
===========
Donkey Kong was originally released in the arcades by Nintendo and is one of
the first games designed by gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto. Nintendo ported
the game to their home console, the Nintendo Entertainment System, and its
popularity continued to soar. This game is responsible for creating some of
Nintendo’s most iconic characters, such as the titular Donkey Kong (later to
become Cranky Kong) and Mario (originally known as Jumpman).
——-
STAGE 1
——-
In this stage, you pretty much learn the basics of how Donkey Kong is played.
You are first tasked with jumping over a barrel. Just stand still and wait for
a barrel to come to you, or walk over to a barrel as it is rolling. Press A
while also pushing in the direction you want to jump to successfully jump over
a barrel.
The second part will teach you about the hammer. Grab the hammer and use it to
smash two barrels. For the third stage, climb to the top. Dodge the barrels
while climbing the ladders. To climb a ladder, stand in front of it, then
push “up”. You can also climb down ladders, by the way.
At the end of this, you need to defeat Donkey Kong by pulling a bolt out of
the top of the stage. Get to the top of the stage and either walk over the
yellow bolt or jump over it.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
Stand on the platform and ride it to the top. Then jump to the left to grab
the umbrella that is sitting there. Then use the ladders and climb up to the
top right corner of the stage to grab the purse. Watch out for the springpad
that Donkey Kong tosses. It will bounce the exact same way every time and then
fall down the stage in the exact same spot, so just watch its movements and
you will be fine.
The third and fourth parts of this stage task you with getting to the top
which can be tricky because of the springpad. Just stand still and wait for
it to go over Mario’s head. As SOON as it is over Mario’s head, make a break
for the ladder and quickly climb to the top. If timed properly, you should be
fine.
The difference between the third and fourth parts of the stage is that for the
fourth part, you start at the bottom. Jump over to the platform where the
fireball is, but avoid the fireball. When it climbes up the ladder, jump across
to the other platforms and climb up the way you did to get the purse earlier.
When you reach the top, time yourself just like you did for the third part to
bypass the springpad and save the day.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
First jump over two barrels at once. Remember to push Mario in the direction
that you are jumping to make sure he can make it. You just keep having to
jump over two barrels at once for the first three parts of this stage.
In the fourth part of the stage, you have to jump over THREE barrels at once,
which is obviously a bit more challenging than just two. It’s a little tricky,
but jump almost right at the start and remember to push TOWARDS the barrels
and you will be able to clear the jump.
A new wrinkle is added to the stages at this point. Basically, Mario will have
three lives, represented by hearts. Losing all the hearts means game over.
You can use a continue and stay on the same part of the stage that you were
at, but this will only get you a maximum of one star.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
Get 3,000 points using the hammer. Simple enough. Use your first hammer to
smash everything in sight. Everything that is destroyed is worth 500 points,
so you need to destroy a total of six objects. You should be able to get
pretty close just by waiting for barrels to come at you.
If your first hammer breaks, carefully get up the ladders and get the second
hammer. Use that hammer to destroy the rest of the barrels that are required
to get to 3,000.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Not only do you need 3,000 points, but you need to collect Pauline’s items as
well. Just focus on getting the items first and you should be VERY close to
3,000. For the rest of the points, just walk over the bolts.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Jump over 10 barrels! This one is pretty tough. I find it easiest to move back
and forth on the start platforming. Keep an eye on the barrels as they near
the ladders because they will sometimes go down the ladders instead of going
all the way to the end of the platforms before rolling down.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
First smash the fireball with the hammer. As you notice, when Mario is
equipped with the hammer, the fireballs change to a dark blue color and become
vulnerable as a result.
In part two, you have to jump OVER a fireball. This is easy enough, but they
have an annoying tendency to suddenly turn around. Just run to the closest
fireball and jump over him like you would the barrels.
Finally, you have to knock Donkey Kong down from the top of the structure.
To knock Donkey Kong down, simply get rid of all the yellow bolts holding the
structure together. Remember to get rid of bolts you have to either walk over
them or jump over them. The longer you take doing this, the more fireballs
that will crowd the screen.
Mario has a ton of lives for this level, much more than the usual three.

===============
DONKEY KONG JR.
===============
The sequel to Donkey Kong sees Mario put in the role of a villain for the first
time in the history of gaming. Players control Donkey Kong Jr., who would grow
up to be the Donkey Kong that we play as in the current games. The goal is to
save Donkey Kong, who was captured at the end of the first game by Mario.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
Donkey Kong Jr. plays differently than the original Donkey Kong by a lot.
To maneuver, you need to climb onto the vines. You can slide down the vines
very fast by pulling down on the stick, and you can move up them fast by
holding on to two vines at once and moving up them.
Donkey Kong Jr. can still jump, just like Mario could in the original Donkey
Kong game. Lizard creatures that climb up and down the vines are the primary
enemies to deal with here.
The first part of this stage will have you simply knock down a fruit. To do
this, climb up the vine until you reach the fruit. Touch the fruit and it will
fall down.
The second part is about defeating an enemy with fruit. Just press the left
stick to the right to make some fruit fall and knock down an enemy. And
finally, for the third part of the stage, climb your way to the top.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
This stage has new goals and also has you playing in a different level from
Donkey Kong Jr. There’s also new enemies in the original stage. Birds will be
flying across the screen. The first one flies low and the second one will
fly high, so just remember that as you dodge them.
The first goal is to drop all the fruit. So move from vine to vine and make
all the fruit fall. You should only have to worry about one wave of the
birds during this. The second goal is to jump onto the moving hook. Do this to
get to the third goal.
The third goal is simply to reach the top of the level again. Accomplish this
and you’ll reach a blue level with chains, keyholes at the top of the
structure, and keys at the bottom of the chains. Birds still fly across the
screen, so avoid them as you push the key up. You only need to enter the first
key into its slot to complete the stage.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Like you’ve already learned, fruit can be dropped on enemies to defeat them.
This stage only has two pieces of fruit to begin with, so if you waste one,
it is game over. The only bird that can be hit with fruit is the low-flying
one, so what you’ll want to do is defeat the first low-flying bird, avoid the
high-flying one, and then get to the next piece of fruit so you can knock it
on the second low-flying bird that comes through.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
The Donkey Kong Jr. equivalent of jumping over 10 barrels. Just stay at the
top platform that you start on. Jump over the orange electrical blip every
time it rotates around the platform. Also keep an eye on Mario as he will
deploy a blue electrical blip, though this one will not come back around the
platform like the orange blip. When the blue blip is introduced, you will need
to move a bit in order to jump over both of them without getting hit.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
There are more than three enemies, but only three pieces of fruit. For the
first one, wait for it to go by and then time it so you can jump into the
fruit and over it simultaneously to make the fruit fall on it. Remember the
blue sparks that Mario will also shoot out to make this even tougher.
The second piece of fruit can’t be jumped over because it hangs too low. Stay
on the poles on the fruit side of the screen, and then time it so you can
knock it right into the orange blip as it is zipping on by. Then it’s just a
matter of getting to the third fruit and making it either fall on an orange
blip, blue blip, or whatever else.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Simply get to the top.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
A return to the key level. Knock the first key into the keyholoe, but watch
out for the birds that have been added to the mix. Then work on the other keys.
There will be lizards crawling on the chains as well, but one can be killed
with fruit if you need it done. Otherwise just push the key up as far as
possible on the chain until he turns around, then go to a different chain and
return to his once he crawls by the key to push that one in the slot as well.

===========
MARIO BROS.
===========
Before they were “super”, the Mario Bros. were the stars of their very own
arcade game that was also ported to NES. Mario and Luigi were actually working
as plumbers at this point, clearing the pipes of the Mushroom Kingdoms from
the pesky Koopa Troopas.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
To knock down enemies, you have to jump into the platforms they are standing on
from the bottom. This will flip the enemies onto their back. Simply do this to
the first enemy possible to move on to the second phase.
The second phase is extremely simply. Just walk into the three enemies that are
already on their backs. When they’re done with, your final goal in this stage
is to take out all three enemies that are all mobile. You can use the POW
block at the bottom of the screen to knock down all the enemies simultaneously
if they are all on a platform.
WIth all the enemies on their backs, just go around the stage and run into them
or “kick” them as the action is described in the game.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
This stage introduces new enemies. First off, there are crabs. The crabs
take two hits to knock on their backs. Then you can take them out. The
second phase introduces a bug that bounces. They move in an arc, so you have
to see where they’re going to land, knock them over, and then take them out.
There are three phases of this. The final phase will have you defeating all the
enemy types introduced to you so far in Mario Bros.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
A departure from having to kill enemies, now you have to collect all the
coins in the stage. There is a strict timer on this, so you really have to
collect them all with VERY little room for mistakes.
Start moving to the right side of the screen and get the coins. Then when you
move beyond the screen, you’ll come out on the opposite side of the screen.
Get the rest of the coins on the bottom floor, then jump to the middle
platform and collect the platforms as you criss-cross to the top.
If you do this and don’t have to go back for any coins, then you should have
enough time to get all of the coins.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
Four phases of defeating ice enemies. Ice enemies act a lot differently than
any of the other enemies encountered so far. They slide along the platforms
and then if they near Mario, they will turn the entire platform into slippery
ice.
The trick to defeating the ice enemies, is to get under them and jump up to
break them as SOON as it slides by. As you go through the phases, watch how the
ice enemy bounces off the other enemies and then slides back the other way.
Remember that the enemies can also travel between the screens.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
These three stages all feature a single enemy that moves fast. The first stage
is a koopa that moves fast, whereas the second stage is a crab. Knock the
crab to make it go over the gap, come back across the screen, and then knock
it onto its back as it comes back around. Finally, the third enemy is one of
those bouncing bugs, except, of course, moving fast.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Another coin collecting level, but with all the platforms as ice. The ice
makes it a bit harder to get all the coins, but you can use the ice to propel
yourself across the gaps faster.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Hilariously sadistic, this stage is about killing Luigi! You can run into
Luigi to push him around, so just push him into the enemies.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
Using the POW block, you are supposed to knock down all the enemies at the
same time. Just watch to make sure they are all standing on a platform when
you hit the block.
The only tricky part is when the crabs and the bug are at the same time. You
have to hit the block the first time when the crabs are on the platforms, but
the bug is in the air. The reason you have to do this is because the crabs
take two hits to be knocked onto their back, but the bugs one. Hitting the
crabs again after they are knocked onto their backs will cause them to jump
back onto their feet.
When the bug lands and the crabs are on the platforms all at the same time,
you can hit the POW block to knock everybody onto their backs.
——-
STAGE 9
——-
As you’ve probably noticed, there are sometimes fireballs that fly across the
stage. There are green and red ones. The green ones move fast and have a low
arc. The red ones move slow and have huge arcs.
The fireballs can be destroyed just like the enemies can be knocked down. Hit
the platforms to make them go up right into the fireballs. There’s a few
stages of this.
——–
STAGE 10
——–
Four phases of collecting coins. Just like before, do NOT back-track. Just
keep moving across the screen and grabbing the coins as they come.

=======
PINBALL
=======
Pinball is one of those gaming genres that has truly transcended the industry
and has appeal to everyone, regardless of how they feel about gaming. Nintendo
realized this in the 80s when they created a pinball game for the original
Nintendo system.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
The goal here is to get 5,000 points. Like with any pinball game, more points
can be gained by hitting the objects and completing the little in-table
objectives. There are two sets of flippers, so you have double the opportunity
to reach the goal of 5,000. The left flippers are controlled using the d-pad
and pressing any direction on it, while the right bumper is controlled using
any of the face buttons.
For all of these Pinball stages, you should restart if you fail once. Yeah,
you have lives, but the game pretty much restarts at the beginning anyway
regardless of if you use a continue or not.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
This may sound stupid, but right here you should just mash on the flippers.
Trying to be precise about this is not going to work. Your goal here is to
flip two of the cards at the top of the screen. To accomplish this, the ball
simply has to touch the cards.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Pinball also featured a stage where Mario (there he is again!) had to rescue
Pauline. In NES Remix, Pauline will fall from the top of the screen and you
need to catch her with the platform that Mario is holding. Then carry her to
the exit screen to the right so that she can escape.
In the second phase of this stage, you’ll need to free Pauline yourself by
making the colors mostly the same color. Every time the ball touches one of
the numbers, their color will changed. When enough of the numbers are the
same color, then Pauline will fall from the top again.
Earlier I said that you should just restart every time you fail once in one of
these Pinball stages, but this is the one exception. Since this is separated
into two different phases, you shouldn’t restart if you lose once or twice in
the color-changing phase. If you do, then you’ll be sent back to the first
phase.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
Whenever you launch the ball, there are lanes at the top of the screen that
are of varying point values. The one in the middle is worth 1,000 points and
the two lanes to either side of it are each worth 500 points. Just keep
launching the ball until you get it in the middle lane. In my experience,
holding down the A button and then counting to three seemed to work with
timing the ball to go through the middle lane most of the time.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
To make the seals dance, you have to collect the little orbs on the left
side of the screen. Instead of mashing the flippers like I suggested earlier,
try to be precise as you hit the ball here.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
It may seem like a daunting task at first to earn 105,000 points, but it’s
really not that bad because you already started out with over 100,000 points.
What makes this challenging is that the flippers are invisible. Just mash the
flipper buttons and you should be fine.

GOLF
====
Golf is one of the most popular sports in the world, so why shouldn’t it make
an appearance on the NES? The simply titled “Golf”. While the golfer in the
game kinda looks like Mario, it is not really Mario. Bummer!
——-
STAGE 1
——-
This stage is all about learning how to swing the club. To do this, press A
once to make the cursor move. Then press it again in the designated area for
the best possible swing.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
You can switch clubs by pressing “up” and “down” on the d-pad. The game will
recommend clubs to you that are perfect for each situation, so switch to those
and use them to get to the green.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Putting in the game is a little different than how hitting the ball works with
other clubs. To putt, press A and then press it again immediately for a short
putt. For a long putt, press A and let the cursor go down the meter a ways
before hitting A again. You get two chances each time to get the ball into the
hole.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
You have four strokes to get to the green in the first phase, and it is not a
fun time. You’ll want to use the starting club and keep in mind the wind
factor. When you get close to the green, try using the PW, SW, or putter for
the best accuracy. You don’t have to make it into the hole, just onto the
green. The second phase is considerably easier. It just involves hitting the
ball over some trees and then proceeding to get the ball onto the green.
However, you only get two strokes for the second phase.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
This is about putting the ball into the hole with one stroke. For the first
hole, you will need to move the cursor slightly to the right. For the second
hole, slightly to the left. Then it’s just a matter of feeling out the right
power for the shots.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Get it on the green with single strokes. Don’t worry about switching clubs
or adjusting direction or anything. This is all about figuring out the correct
power for your swing.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
This one will probably drive you insane like it did for me. Basically, you
have to get a hole in one. Luckily, you have a lot of lives so it is not as
irritating as it would be otherwise. To get a hole in one here, you’re going to
need a lot of luck, and that’s really all I can say about it. There’s no clear
cut way to get a hole in one each time with this stroke, so just keep going at
it until you get it. I will say that you can get three rainbow stars and lose a
lot of lives still, so that’s the good news.

CLU CLU LAND
============
Not one of Nintendo’s most well-known properties, Clu Clu Land is a game about
a fish trying to recover stolen treasure. It’s been available in the arcades,
on the NES, and on both the Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles for quite some
time now, but NES Remix is where it’s really getting the spotlight.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
As Bubbles the fish, you can move around the boards in the game by holding
the directional buttons to make Bubbles grab onto the pegs and therefore change
his direction.
In this first phase, you will need to learn how to control Bubbles so that you
can complete the patterns. Move bubbles in between the flags that have the
yellow circle around them to make a gold ingot appear there. This will complete
the patterns.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
There is also some combat in Clu Clu Land. Press A to fire a shockwave at an
enemy. This will cause the enemy to change color, which indicates that the
enemy is vulnerable. Run the enemy into a wall to pop it and therefore destroy
it.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Collect the piece of fruit, then collect the flag. Then collect the two pieces
of fruit for the third phase. The fourth phase is where this gets a little
bit tricky. You first have to grab the clock at the bottom of the screen.
This will freeze the enemies. Then you need to shoot them with the shockwave
and push them into a wall. However, there is a time limit on this because when
the freeze runs out, you fail the phase.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
In the bonus stages of Clu Clu Land, you can move in between the pegs to
collect gold (though it is blue here for some reason). You need to collect at
least 40 pieces of gold before the timer runs out to successfully complete
this stage.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Remember that heart pattern from earlier? Well, now you have to complete it
again, albeit you have more spaces to fill than before.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Just complete a series of patterns. Use shockwave on the enemies and avoid the
enemy spawning portals, as they really tend to get in the way a lot in this
stage.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Only two enemies will be on the board at a time. Defeat the first two and
then a couple more will slowly spawn from the spawn point in the center.
Get rid of those two to complete it. You have three lives, but if you would
happen to die, you might as well just restart it from the beginning because
you are restarted to the beginning every time you lose a life anyway in
Clu Clu Land.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
More patterns to complete. You’ve seen all of these before, so you should have
a pretty good grasp on this!

==========
EXCITEBIKE
==========
Nintendo’s “Excite” series is one of the longest lasting franchises from the
big N. It all started with Excitebike on the original Nintendo Entertainment
System.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
To accelerate the bike in Excitebike, hold in the A button. Use up and down
directional buttons to move between the lanes. Avoid the mud, avoid the
obstacles, and avoid running into the other racers on the track, or your
“rivals” as the game calls them.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
To do a wheelie in the game, just keep pushing left on the d-pad or the
stick, but I recommend using the d-pad. The first phase wants you to keep a
wheelie going for three seconds straight. This is very easy; just hold in the
A button for acceleration, and then repeatedly push left on the d-pad to
maintain the wheelie.
For the second phase, you have to use the wheelie to bypass the barricades
that are on the tracks. It’s not good to maintain the wheelie the whole time.
Instead just push the left on the d-pad at the last second to get over the
barricades. The third phase is the same as the second one, except with mud
thrown in the mix to avoid as well.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
After hitting the ramps, use the d-pad by pushing left and right to adjust
your racer in mid-air and make him land levelly with the ground.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
On the bottom of the screen, there is a temperature gauge. The gauge has red
and green. The red indicates overheating, and the green means OK. Hold B to
activate the turbo. Using the turbo will fill the meter up with red and if it
is full, you will crash. You just have to use the turbo once to satisfy that
requirement of this stage. So you don’t have to blast through the entire
thing with turbo going.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Track #1 is the first level in the original Excitebike game. Complete it from
start to finish.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
When in races against rivals, it is possible to knock down the rivals by making
them hit your back wheel. You can do this by swerving into the lane with them
and having your back tire hit their front tire, or you can also do this by
stopping in front of them in their lane and making them run directly into your
back tire.
Defeat all the rivals necessary.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Finish each stage without crashing, and that’s all there is to it.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
You have to do two laps and at least beat the 3rd best time. The 3rd best
time is 1:24:00. Use turbo a lot and hug the lane at the top. If you stick to
that lane, you will hurt the speed traps on the ground that will lower the
temperature gauge on the bike and allow you to keep using boost.
——-
STAGE 9
——-
Complete a lap on Track #1 without crashing.
——–
STAGE 10
——–
Completed two laps in under 1:16:00. There are no rivals on this one, so you
can use turbo a lot.

=============
BALLOON FIGHT
=============
Balloon Fight might not be the most memorable Nintendo game ever made, but I
hugely enjoyed the original release on NES. In NES Remix, Balloon Fight plays
much like the original game.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
Use the d-pad to control the direction of the character you control. Mash on
the A button to gain height, then stop pressing A to descend. To pop the
balloons of the enemies, touch the top of the balloons.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
Enemies that are on the ground can be knocked out by running into them. The
third phase will have the enemy descend with a parachute. After he hits the
ground, you can run into him and knock him out.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Balloons will fly out of pipes in the ground. Pop 10 of them.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
The screen will scroll with various hazards in the way. Avoid the hazards so
you don’t die. Your goal here is to just keep popping the balloons. You’ll
have to go through a few phases of this.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
The enemies will start pumping up their balloons. You can knock out at least
one of them until they get their balloons all the way filled up. The other
ones will need their balloons popped, and then they will slowly descend to the
ground with a parachute. Knock them out as well.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
This stage actually requires you to knock out the enemies before they can fill
up their balloons. Do just that to continue to the next stage.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Balloons will constantly be coming out of the pipes again. The twist with this
one is that you can’t let a single balloon fly off screen and you have to hit
10 in a row. To do this, you’re going to need to go all the way to the right
or left and off the screen so that you can instantly get to the pipes that are
farthest away from each other.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
There’s a lot more enemies than usual and they all are pumping up their own
balloons. If you are fast enough, you should be able to get rid of at least
three before they start floating around, which makes it harder to pop their
balloons and defeat them.
——-
STAGE 9
——-
While the bubbles that have been floating around the stages haven’t meant
much of anything to you before this, in this stage they all need to be popped.
——–
STAGE 10
——–
As is illustrated in the opening moments of this stage, the enemy floats to
the water and is eaten by a sea monster. What you need to do is immediately
fly to the left side of the screen, keep going, and then you’ll come from the
right side of the screen.
You should then be able to hit the balloon of the enemy to start making it
float to the bottom with the parachute.
——–
STAGE 11
——–
Pop 20 balloons. Can’t miss a single one again. It’s easier than it sounds.
——–
STAGE 12
——–
Spinning obstacles are in the middle of the level. They will knock you and the
enemies around, but otherwise you can just take out the enemies like normal.
——–
STAGE 13
——–
Another scrolling level. In this one, you have to pop 20 balloons. Avoid the
electrical hazards that are everywhere and also avoid hanging too low to the
ocean or else a monster will pop up and eat you.
Don’t stress about missing any of the balloons, there are plenty to go around.
If you hit the bubbles on this level, it will cause everything on the screen to
freeze, which makes it easier to bypass some of the electrical hazards and
such.

ICE CLIMBER
===========
Made most famous from their appearance in Super Smash Bros., the titular Ice
Climbers once starred in their own game on the NES. They climbed mountains and
fought monsters. It was a grand old time. Now it’s time to re-experience all
of that on the Wii U.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
Smash through the first layer of ice just by jumping up to break the ice. This
will allow you to get to the second layer.
In the second phase, you have to use your hammer to defeat an enemy. Beat up
the enemies by by hitting the B button. Then your final challenge is just to
get to the top of the mountain.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
Eggplants are located on the different platforms here. There is a time limit,
but it isn’t that restrictive, so don’t go too fast and wind up screwing
yourself by falling to the bottom of the mountain.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Get to the top of the mountain. Then when the condor flies by jump so that
you get right in the middle of the condor.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
Get to the fourth floor in each phase. New hazards including smaller flying
birds and icicles that fall from the sky.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Break as many blocks as required by each phase.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Collect the fruit!
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Starting at the bottom, you have to get all the way to the top of the mountain
and grab on the condor. You will go through a bonus stage about collecting
fruit, but I recommend ignoring the fruit in favor of simply getting to the
condor.
At the start, you’ll want to go to the left part of the mountain and jump on
the cloud that comes from the left. Then jump up and to the left to land on
the small piece of ice that is extending from the mountain wall. Hit the
enemy that walks out of the cave with your hammer and then smash through the
ice and work your way up.
The trickiest part is the bonus stage part. You’ll need to hop on the cloud
that is coming from the right almost as soon as it comes out. This way your
jumps should be timed so that you can just get from cloud to cloud on your
way to the top and to the condor. There is a time limit, so keep that in
mind as well.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
Combat-based stage. The first phase requires you to break an icicle. You
will be able to clearly see it forming on the ice above your head. Just jump
into it and the hammer will do its job automatically.
The second stage wants you to kill one of those birds as it swoops down to
attack. Hit it with your hammer as it draws near. For the third stage,
quickly break through the ice as the polar bear starts walking out. If you
aren’t fast enough, the polar bear will turn around and go back into his
cave, which will mean you fail the stage because the time will run out.
Quickly give the polar bear a couple of good whacks with your hammer to defeat
him as well.
——-
STAGE 9
——-
Like before, your goal for each phase is to reach the fourth floor. The new
enemies that have been introduced throughout the previous stages are at play
here now, plus there are thicker pieces of ice to break through that also
make you slide around. That being said, the first phase is the most annoying
due to the tiny clouds, but when you’re done with that, it’s all up hill from
there.
——–
STAGE 10
——–
Snag all the vegetables. Then simply get to the top and get to the condor.

WRECKING CREW
=============
Is Mario in everything? Well, not EVERYTHING, but pretty close. Wrecking Crew
is another NES game that stars Nintendo’s main man in a non-platforming role.
Wrecking Crew takes 130 stars to unlock. You should be able to unlock it
fairly easily just by going through the other stages in the game.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
Destroy the first set of walls using your hammer. Just walk in front of them
and hit A to smash them. When all the walls have been destroyed in the first
phase, you move on to the second phase which introduces bombs. Just hit the
bombs and they will do all of the work for you.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
To make the enemies go through the doors, hit the doors with your hammer. Then
just get out of the way so the enemies can get through. Bombs work similarly to
POW blocks in Mario Bros. Hitting the bombs to open up all the doors at the
same time.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Five phases. M, A, R, I, O. Before each phase, the game will circle the wall
that has the letter you need with a yellow circle. Just go to that wall and
smash it to get the right letter.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
Just use bombs to blow up all the walls.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Break all of the ladders. It’s pretty self-explanatory. In the third phase,
you’re going to want to start on either the far left side or the far right
side. Otherwise you will have enemies in the middle from breaking those ladders
that will make it impossible to finish this stage without dying or restarting.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Watch where the coin disappears above one of the walls. Then climb the ladder
and smash that wall before the com that you’re competing against has a chance
to do so.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Destroy the walls using the bombs. At the final phase, you’ll actually have to
stand right next to the bomb after you detonate it so that you are sent to
the level below in order to finish the stage.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
When the enemies get really close to Mario, you can hit the green support beams
to drop the oil drums on them and capture them. This takes a little timing and
practice to do this without getting hit by the enemies, but once you have the
hang of it, it’s really easy. The second and third phases will require you to
use bombs in order to trap the enemies in a timely manner, and remember that
the pink ones move slightly faster than the regular ones.
——-
STAGE 9
——-
Smash the first ladder as the enemy is climbing down it. Then smash the next
two ladders as the enemies start climbing down them. Finally, on the third
phase, move to the right so that you come out on the opposite side of the
screen. From here, you can just smash one ladder after another and knock all
the enemies down. To accomplish this, simply start climbing on their ladder,
then move to the right to drop down. Then move back to their ladder before
they finish climbing down it and smash the ladder to make them fall all the way
to the ground floor.
——–
STAGE 10
——–
Use the bombs to break the walls the fastest. You’ll have to use the screen
trick to avoid the enemies and the fireball. The last three walls you will
need to smash with your hammer to completely destroy, though the bombs should
put a serious crack in them.
——–
STAGE 11
——–
From the start, move to the left until you come out of the right side of the
screen. At the first oil drum, wait for the enemy to get near and then break
the green support beam to trap it. Next, break the next three support beams to
allow the second enemy to escape.
Lead that second enemy to the oil drum beneath the third enemy. Hit it and you
should be able to trap both enemies in one fell swoop if timed correctly. If
not, lead the third enemy to another oil drum or the door at the bottom to
trap them.

SUPER MARIO BROS.
=================
Super Mario Bros. single-handedly revived the gaming industry after the
infamous crash of 1983. Following those dark days, Super Mario Bros. breathed
new life into gaming, and it also was a great argument for someone to buy a
Nintendo Entertainment System. Super Mario Bros. is still one of the absolute
best and most celebrated platformers of all time, and for very good reason.
Now it’s time to revisit the classic, Remix style.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
Hold in B or X as you run to make Mario start to sprint. Use this speed to get
to the goal pole at the end of the level while also avoiding the enemies. You
can get power-ups to make this easier if you are having troubles simply
avoiding the enemies. To get power-ups, hit the bricks. You should know how
to play Mario.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
Collect all the coins on the screen before the time runs out.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
There’s a Goomba walking in between two pipes. Jump on his head to defeat him
before the time runs out.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
There are three different phases of this, all with Mario being temporarily
invincible. Use his invincbility to kill the amount of enemies as required at
the beginning of each phase. Don’t bother back-tracking too much if you miss
an enemy, just sort of sprint through and try to hit all of them that you
can without having to turn around.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Three phases of reaching the goal pole.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Multiple phases of jumping on enemies and shooting them with fireballs.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
Multiple phases of hitting vine blocks. Before each phase, the game will
circle the block that needs to be hit with a yellow circle. Hit this block to
make a vine grow out of the top of it.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
The goal here is to collect 35 coins. There’s a very finite amount of coins
and since the platform is moving, you have a lot of room for error. What you
need to do is keep the run butting pressed in as you jump in an arc on the
cloud. This way you can jump sort of away from the cloud to the left to get
some coins and then move back to the right to get more. There are three coins
at the end of the area just floating in mid-air waiting for you to grab them
as well.
——-
STAGE 9
——-
Getting 10 1-ups in a row is extremely easy because the game puts you right in
a famous exploit from the original Super Mario Bros. By hitting the turtle
shell constantly against the step, Mario will just keep getting 1-ups. It is
possible for him to slip off, and in that case, just jump back on the edge of
the turtle shell.
——–
STAGE 10
——–
First, jump on one of the Bullet Bills. Then it’s time to jump on Lakitu. Angle
Mario’s jump similarly to how you did before when collecting the 35 coins to
get on top of the item block. This will then allow you to jump on Lakitu’s
head, but be careful to avoid the spiked enemies he throws from his cloud.
A Hammer Bros. is up next. This guy will throw a fairly consistent stream of
hammers, stopping for a few seconds after every three hammers he throws. The
easiest way to kill him is to get to the bricks beneath them and then jump up
to knock the brick into his feet. You can also jump on his head, but the
window of opportunity to pull this off is very small and the chances of you
getting hit by one of his hammer is greater.
——–
STAGE 11
——–
The first 1-up you have to collect is very easy. Just jump up and grab it.
For the second one, watch where the game puts the yellow circle to show you
where the hidden block is. Jump underneath it to find another hidden block
that you can then jump on top of to hit the hidden block with the 1-up inside.
Finally, the third 1-up is in world 1-2. As the 1-up mushroom slides along the
top of the screen, be sure to follow it closely. If you go too fast, then the
1-up will be lost because there is no backtracking possible in the original
Super Mario Bros.
Avoid or kill the Goombas and wait for the piranha plants to recede back into
their pipes to avoid being killed by them. When you reach the gap and the
moving platforms, jump on one. The 1-up will fall through the platforms so
stand underneath of it.
——–
STAGE 12
——–
Defeat Bowser, with slight variations in each phase. To defeat Bowser, get
behind him and hit the axe. This axe will cause the bridge that Bowser is
standing on to collapse. You can run under him or jump over him, but the
easiest way is always to go over his head using the platform that’s there to
hit the axe and take him out.
——–
STAGE 13
——–
First get the 1-up by hitting the hidden block. To find the hidden block, first
look at the green hill in the background, then jump up right above it and
that is where the block can be found.
In the second phase, you must collect two coins to get the 1-up. A platform
will rise to the coins, so jump on the platform and get both coins.
And for the third phase, hit the turtle shell that is right in front of
Mario. Chase it all the way to the opposite end of the screen and you will
have hit enough enemies to get a 1-up.
——–
STAGE 14
——–
Simply collect the coins before the time runs out. These are all water levels.
To control Mario when he is underwater, mash on the A button to make him swim
up and then let go and he will sink to the bottom. Use this to avoid the
enemies.
——–
STAGE 15
——–
The first pipe that you can go into is just beyond the gap with the two Goombas
walking back and forth. To go into a pipe, stand on top of the pipe and then
pull the stick down or press down on the d-pad.
The second pipe will be the smallest pipe in the area. Just keep going to the
right until you find the small pipe and go down it. Finally, the third pipe is
in a water level. Swim to the right, avoiding the squids and fire as best as
you can until you reach the pipe that is all the way on the right side of the
screen.
——–
STAGE 16
——–
Kill the enemies on the screen using fireballs before the timer runs out.
Remember that to use fireballs, press the B or the X button.
——–
STAGE 17
——–
Another pipe level. Just get into the pipes as designated by the game. The
third phase you will have to go a ways before finding a pipe that you can
actually enter. Just try them all.
——–
STAGE 18
——–
To get 5,000 points on the goal pole, you need to jump at it with enough speed
so that Mario hits the flag area. Just get a running start and you should be
able to get 5,000 on all the poles with no problem.
——–
STAGE 19
——–
More Bowser encounters, but this time he is more aggressive and there are
more hazards separating the two of you. He will shoot more fireballs than
usual, and he will also have hammers. Luckily for you, there is an easy way to
beat all of these phases.
In the first phase, just do it normally and jump over Bowser. For the rest of
the phases, he will be throwing a ton of hammers. If you start sprinting as
SOON as the phase starts and never slow down, you should be able to run RIGHT
under Bowser as he jumps in the air. This gives you easy access to the axe and
allows Mario to save the day!
——–
STAGE 20
——–
A little known fact about Super Mario Bros. is that the Bowsers that you
fight in the first seven worlds of the game are NOT the real Bowser! They are
just regular enemies in disguise as Bowser to serve as his decoys. If you hit
them enough times with fireballs, they revert to their original forms and
die. Do this to all seven Bowsers.
——–
STAGE 21
——–
Collect the hidden 1-ups. They are all fairly obvious in terms of where they
are located simply because of the layout of the levels, but if you do take too
long to find them, the game will point them out to you by circling them with a
yellow circle!
——–
STAGE 22
——–
See how fast you can collect the coins. The phase in the dungeon area can be a
little tricky. To get those coins, you need to make your way to the top of
the screen and all the way to the left. Then you should be able to jump down
and collect both rows of coins.
The water phase has a lot of coins, so just be careful not to be hit by any
enemies or swim off screen. Finally, the final phase only gives you 10 seconds
to snag the coins, but that’s all you need. Immediately after the phase begins,
jump backwards onto the block with the fire on it. Then jump to the right and
you should be able to get the coins before being hit by the fire.
——–
STAGE 23
——–
This stage combines all the stuff you’ve experienced in the previous stages and
challenges you to complete short snippets of various Super Mario Bros. levels.

===================
THE LEGEND OF ZELDA
===================
Perhaps Nintendo’s second most famous franchise, The Legend of Zelda was just
as revolutionary as Super Mario Bros. when it released back on the original
Nintendo console. Since the original game, the franchise has become one of the
most popular and legendary gaming franchises of all time, with each entry
completely blowing expectations out of the water, and it is probably the
most consistent series in all of gaming in terms of quality. There’s nothing
like Zelda, and it all began on the NES.
——-
STAGE 1
——-
Enter the shop and then pick up the sword from the old man. In the second
phase, use the sword to kill the enemies. When Link has full health, his sword
will fire beams. If Link is damaged at all, you will have to get a lot closer
to damage enemies.
In the third phase, you need to restore your health by walking into the lake
with the fairy. In the fourth phase, you need to buy something from the shop.
Choose any of the items available. And finally, for the fifth phase, you have
to enter the first dungeon of the game. Walk across the bridge and then enter
the spooky looking tree trunk in order to accomplish this.
——-
STAGE 2
——-
In the first phase, get the key from the skeletons by killing the one that is
holding the key. The second and third phases require you to kill all of the
enemies in the room to get the key with the added stipulation that you cannot
tkae any damage.
——-
STAGE 3
——-
Link is just a few rupees short from being able to buy something from the
shop. Leave the shop and just start killing monsters until you have enough
rupees to purchase the candle. Remember which directions you go so that you
don’t get lost on your way back to the shop.
——-
STAGE 4
——-
In Zelda, there’s more than one way to skin a cat. Or open a door, as it
were. To open the first door, just move the block out of the way. For the
second door, blow up the wall that is designated using bombs. To drop a bomb,
just press B in the yellow circle.
The third phase will have traps that will try to crush Link when you to make
it to the opposite side of the arm. Move down to their row and let them fly at
each other (be sure to back up to avoid being hit). Then as they slowly return
to their original positions, make your way to the block that is sticking out
the farthest to the left. Push this out of the way to go down the stairs.
——-
STAGE 5
——-
Defeat the dragon by standing far away from it and shooting Link’s lasers at
its horn. It will shoot fireballs, but if you are standing far back enough,
the fireballs should split up and go right past you. Keep doing this until the
dragon is dead. Taking damage will cause you to fail the stage.
When the dragon is dead, it will drop a heart. Get the heart. Then head into
the next room. A piece of the Triforce will materialize in here. Pick it up to
complete the stage.
——-
STAGE 6
——-
Another staple of the series is that Link will obtain a variety of tools and
weapons to help him complete his adventures. First off, NES Remix gives Link
a bow and arrow. The bow is able to shoot through the bushes that would
usually block your ranged attacks with the laser sword.
You have to defeat all of the enemies without taking damage in all of the
phases here. For the first phase, use the bow to wipe out all the enemies, but
be careful because they are also armed with bows and arrows.
For the second phase, Link will be in a dungeon with a bunch of slime monsters
crawling around on the floor. Use the boomerang to kill them. Just press B to
throw the boomerang at each one.
Finally, Link will have to fight a room full of bats. Drop bombs and be sure to
get out of the blast radius by the time the bombs explode. Use the bombs to
get rid of all of the bats in the dungeon.
——-
STAGE 7
——-
This stage is all about finding secret entrances. Some of the secret entrances
are automatically found for you as soon as you start, and you just have to move
through them. Otherwise, the game will point the other ones out to you. Use
bombs to blow up walls and use the candle to burn bushes to find the secret
entrances in the game. In the final secret room, grab the rupee to complete
the stage.
——-
STAGE 8
——-
Dodongo is a boss that is featured in many Zelda games. And in all of his
appearances, he can be defeated in pretty much the same way every single time.
You have three bombs, but you only need two. Basically, let Dodongo come at
you and then drop a bomb in his face. He will accidentally eat the bomb and
take damage. Do this twice to defeat Dodongo.
——-
STAGE 9
——-
For the first two phases, you have to defeat all the enemies on the screen
without taking any damage. The first group of enemies are snakes. They will
speed at Link if you are on the same row or column as them. Use the bombs and
the beams from the sword to get rid of them without having to get in close.
The second group of enemies are jumping spiders. When they are in the air,
you can’t hit them. When they land, it’s open season. When they’re all dead,
Link will then be in a graveyard full of ghosts. Throw the boomerang at all the
ghosts and the one that it actually hits is the real ghost.
When you find the real ghost, it will be momentarily stunned from being hit by
the boomerang. Go to the real ghost and hit it with your sword to defeat it.
——–
STAGE 10
——–
Dodongo will be defeated right off the bat at the start of this stage. Head
through the door that opens after defeating him and pick up the second Triforce
fragment in here. Your second goal is to obtain the white sword. To get that,
head into the shop door that you see in this new area and simply grab it from
the old man.
In the third phase, Link’s goal is to get a raft. Kill the bats and climb the
ladder at the end of the room to find the raft. Use the raft in the subsequent
phase to get across the water. Just swim straight off the dock and go north to
find the entrance to the next dungeon. Go inside.
You’ll now have to fight two more bosses right in a row and get more pieces of
the Triforce. The first boss is very easy. You can use bombs to blow up more
than one of its heads with a single explosion. The second boss is a two-headed
dragon that will constantly be shooting fireballs. You have to hit its dragon
heads to damage it. Destroying one will cause it to turn into a creature that
will fly around the room in an attempt to hurt you, so avoid that to the best
of your ability.
During the fight with the two-headed dragon, if Link is near death, you can
press B to drink a potion. The potion will restore all of your hearts and in
turn give you a pretty good edge in the boss fight.
——–
STAGE 11
——–
Sometimes the dungeons are too dark to see anything. In this stage, you have
to fight all of the enemies in the dungeon in the pitch black darkness. This
is obviously a very bad situation to find yourself in, but good news! You
can still tell where the enemies are, so just use the projectile from your
sword to pick them off from a distance.
In the third phase of this, there are goblins that will split up into red
bats. Try to kill a goblin and all of its bats as well because you don’t want a
room full of bats. They are somewhat hard to kill and if you take one hit in
these phases, you fail.
——–
STAGE 12
——–
Link needs to fully replenish his health. You can go around killing enemies
until you have enough hearts, but there’s a way easier way to do this. Go up
two screens from the start. A couple of enemies will spawn from the north.
Kill them and one of them will drop a fairy. Get the fairy to fully heal Link.
——–
STAGE 13
——–
This stage is separated into two phases both centered around getting a ring.
For the first phase, kill all the enemies and get their rupees. Then touch the
statue that is in the top row in the center. It will come to life. Move away
from it and then go down the stairs it was blocking.
Purchase the ring. For the second stage, Link will be in a room full of
powerful enemies. Ignore them and go to the block that is on the left-most
part of the room and sticking out the furthest. Push that block out of the
way to access the stairs.
Going down these stairs will lead you to a familiar dungeon area. It looks
exactly like the place where you got the raft earlier. Avoid or kill the
enemies here and make your way to the ring on the far right side. Grab it to
complete this stage.
——–
STAGE 14
——–
Three phases of fighting enemies. The first set of enemies can just be blasted
from a difference. The second set move a lot quicker and take more damage,
but can be defeated without too much of a headache just the same.
Finally, the third phase is against a bug enemy that has other bug enemies
surrounding it in a circle, protecting it. Destroy its protectors by standing
just beyond their reach and swinging your sword. Then repeatedly hit the big
bug in the center to kill it.
——–
STAGE 15
——–
To start with, you need the magic sword. To get the magic sword, push the
desginated tombstone out of the way to reveal a secret set of stairs. Go down
the stairs to collect the magic sword.
When the magic sword in tow, you then need to buy a hint. Go to the base of
the waterfall and push forward to find a woman that sells hints. Give her the
most amount of money possible and she will tell you to keep going up the
mountain.
Go up the mountain steps multiple times until the dungeon finally appears. When
the dungeon does appear, go inside of it. Inside of the dungeon, you will first
have to find the flute. Kill the enemies in the room and then push the block
that is in the center of the room to reveal a secret set of stairs in the
corner.
Go down these stairs to reveal another room very similar to the one where you
got the raft originally. Kill the bats and grab the flute. Then in the next
boss fight, play the flute immediately by pressing B. This will make the boss
shrink to a much smaller size and make the boss much more vulnerable as a
result. Kill the boss, grab the heart, then grab the Triforce fragment in the
next room.
You’ll immediately have to fight the 6th dungeon boss next, which is a huge
spider with a big eye in the middle. Just keep firing arrows right at its
eyelid and you’ll be able to kill it fairly easily. Get the next Triforce
fragment after this monster has been successfully killed.
——–
STAGE 16
——–
Fight your way from room to room, killing all the enemies along the way to
reach the boss room. You don’t actually have to fight the boss (you’ve already
fought this one!).
——–
STAGE 17
——–
First you need to collect the seventh Triforce fragment. Kill the dragon (it
is identical to the first dragon you fought) and then you are able to go into
the next room and receive the fragment.
After that, you have to find the secret entrance. You’ll be in the area where
you used arrows previously. Notice the lone bush separating you and the
enemies near the top of the screen. Burn that bush with the candle, and that
will reveal a set of stairs. Go down the stairs.
For phase three, you have to fight a four-headed dragon. This fight is the same
as the two-headed dragon fight from earlier except…you know, double. Kill
this dragon and then go through the door beyond it to find the eighth Triforce
fragment.
Another hidden entrance needs to be found. Ignore the enemies and take note of
the two large rock structures in the center. Go to the bottom of the one on
the left and place a bomb at its base. When the bomb explodes, it will reveal a
secret entrance. Go through.
Now you have to collect the silver arrows. Kill all the enemies in the room. An
easy way to do this is to drink the potion Link has equipped, which will freeze
all the enemies. Then go around and kill them all. Remember that block in the
center that the game circled at the start of this? You can push it to reveal a
secret set of stairs in the corner.
Avoid the remaining enemies and go down the steps. Then kill the bats and you
can grab the silver arrows! Now if you are familiar with Zelda, you should
know what’s up next…Ganon!
The fight with Ganon is a little difficult. He is invisible and there will be
fireballs flying all around from every direction. Just keep swinging the sword
until you manage to hit him. Do this enough times and Ganon will die. Grab
his Triforce piece and head north into the next room.
The objective for this final phase wasn’t to kill Ganon, but rather to save
Princess Zelda. Zelda is blocked behind some fire. Hit the fire with your
sword to put it out and then you can rescue Zelda. Congratulations!
