Take battles to the seas with Steel Diver: Sub Wars.
L – Area Map
R – Homing Torpedo
X – Forward
Y – Sonar
B – Reverse
A – Torpedoes
Circle Pad – Surface/Dive/Turn
When starting the game, the player is asked to choose a Mii to represent them. You will have to pick from one of the Miis that you already have created and saved on your 3DS system.
I highly recommend that you use the game’s Training Mode to learn the finer aspects of how to play the game.

2. Multiplayer
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
There are numerous multiplayer modes and options in Steel Diver: Sub Wars. The battles are 4 vs 4, with AI bots taking control of subs that aren’t being controlled by real world players.
There’s two teams, the red team and blue team. In the lobby menu, the host can edit the time that the matches last, how the teams are separated, and the type of submarine that will be used in the match. Defeating the AI controlled subs do not count toward the point total required to win the matches.
These are the arenas in Sub Wars (in alphabetical order):
Fish Tank
Hot Springs
Islands
Stone Pillars
Sunken Ruins
Swimming Pool
The Trenches
Underwater Base
Underwater Cave
There is also a “random” option for those that don’t want to select the arena themselves.
Players can choose to play the game locally or online in “Internet Mode”. All of this content is available in the free version of the game.

3. Single Player
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The Single Player mode has missions that deal with the basics of the game to help you out in the multiplayer mode. Two missions are available in the free version of the game. The other five missions have to be unlocked by purchasing the “premium” version of Steel Diver: Sub Wars. The premium version currently costs $9.99 at the time of this writing.
Besides paying for the premium version, you also need to unlock the other levels by earning the required amount of medals.
=================
NAVIGATE THE RINGS
=================
Time Limit: 10 min.
Medal – Pass through all the rings
Star Medal – Finish in four minutes or less
In this mission, players are tasked with going through the Training map and going through all of the rings. There are three levels to this, with each level adding new hazards and more rings to get through.
As SOON as the timer starts, you need to put the speed up all the way. There is a red lever on the right side of the touchscreen that you need to move to the top. You can adjust the depth of the submarine by adjusting the blue lever on the left side, but it is much easier to just move the circle pad up and down instead. Also use the circle pad to turn the sub from the left to right.
In the first level, you just need to worry about getting through the rings. The hazards are minimal. There are some mines, but they are easily avoidable and they are the type of mines that only blow up if you run into them. You can shoot them with your torpedoes if you’d like, but it’s not necessary.
To make this a lot easier, just keep pressing Y to activate the sonar. The yellow blips on the radar indicate rings. Going through the rings in their numeric order is the easiest way, so just keep using the sonar so that you can easily get through them all without having to worry too much about the time limit.
In level 2, there are no added hazards until the very end when an enemy sub will show up. Do not bother engaging the sub because you do not get anything extra for taking it out. Just go straight for the final ring. You may take some damage, but that is no big deal. Just keep an eye on the green meter at the top of the screen because that represents the health of the sub that you’re using.
In the final level, there are a lot more hazards. Mini subs will move up and down and fire missiles at you, and they are actually relatively dangerous. There are some enemy subs, as well as mines that are proximity mines, so just getting close to them will result in you taking damage. You can afford to take about three or so hits, but you’ll want to try to blow up most of these from a distances with your torpedoes.
===============
SINK THE CONVOY
===============
Time Limit: 10 min.
Medal – Sink all enemy vessels
Star Medal – Finish in five minutes or less
These three levels are very simple. They just involve destroying the enemy subs. To fire torpedoes at the enemy subs, aim the cursor at them and then press A or tap the torpedo icon. It is easier to use the face buttons in combat than anything else.
Use the sonar constantly to constantly keep track of where the enemy subs are. If there are no subs close by, press L to bring up the map. The highlighted area is where you need to go to find the enemy subs. So travel to that part of the match and then use the sonar again to locate the enemy subs.
There are a couple of different types of power-ups that help you out in the game. Missile power up boxes will replenish your supply of torpedoes. Wrenches on the boxes indicate boxes that you can collect to replenish your health meter.
Another thing to keep in mind is to avoid surfacing. Surfacing will result in bombs being dropped that can heavily damage your sub.

4. Submarines
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
There are 18 different submarines that can be used, with some only available to use in specific game modes. Crew members can be unlocked and assigned to different subs which can improve their stats. Here you’ll find the default stats of the different subs and how to unlock them in the game.
You can also unlock different patterns for your subs as well. Crews and patterns are edited on each individual sub by first entering the submarine menu (hit Y on the main menu or at numerous other menus in the game) and then using the shoulder buttons. Press L to edit the crew and press R to edit the pattern.
