dEXTRIS may sound a bit like Tetris, but gameplay is a lot different from what you might expect. Although there are blocks involved, dEXTRIS plays out more like Flappy Bird than any iteration of the classic game that you might remember. Quick reflexes and tons of practice are required to even go past the first level, and this guide will help you improve your progress by leaps and bounds.
Gameplay
dEXTRIS is an endless game wherein players must guide two blocks that can move separately as a single unit. Using simple controls, players must last for as long as possible by dodging obstacles in the form of spikes and diamonds. The main goal of the game is to score as high a score as possible, the total of which can be posted in leaderboards should you be considered among the best in your group.
Controls
Controls within dEXTRIS are pretty simple. The screen is divided into two halves, as tapping on the left side of the screen will have the blocks going to the left, while the reverse will also happen should you tap and hold the right side of the screen. Holding both sides of the screen will have the blocks separate and hog the respective sides, while releasing the screen will join the two blocks and have them floating in the middle. These controls will be used so that you can avoid the obstacles that will be flying past you at increasing speeds.
Levels
The game is divided into levels. For every ten obstacles that the player can pass through safely, the level will increase, and so will the speed. Ultimately, reaching higher levels will mean that you will be able to score higher points. Should players hit an obstacle, players will have to restart the game and the current level will reset to zero.
Tips and Tricks
As with any “endless” games, focus and quick reflexes is key within dEXTRIS. Players must quickly press and hold so that the blocks will go where you want them to. The secret here is to move in order to avoid the most current obstacle while being able to log what obstacle would come next and being prepared to perform the next course of action. This will be difficult at first, but with a little practice, you will be able to soar through the first few levels with ease, although of course, the difficulty would increase once more as the game speeds up.
Another tip to succeed in the game is to not move too soon. Your blocks will react to commands fairly fast, and having your blocks move even though they have not cleared the current obstacle yet may lead to catastrophic results. Wait until the current obstacle has flown past before you react to the next one in front of you.
One more thing that can aid you in prolonging your game is to know that there are only three distinct obstacles that you will have to pass. These are the spikes that will require you to move to the left or to the right as a single unit, and then there are diamonds. Diamonds may be small or big in size, and the latter will allow you to pass two blocks past one side. Although this is possible, try to condition yourself into treating all diamonds as small ones. If this is the case, always split your blocks whenever these obstacles show up so that you’ll have less to think about when it comes to reacting to whatever objects come your way.
Lastly, always remember to keep focused as you play. Don’t look at anything else, not even your current level, and don’t get distracted by any outside stimuli. Try and find the best position that you are most comfortable with so that you will not get fatigued too soon. In the case that you do get tired, or if you get too frustrated about dying a lot, don’t forget to rest up and come back to the game once you are refreshed and recharged. With these tips, you will be able to greatly increase your total score and have the performance that you can boast to your friends about.
