1. Introduction and Controls
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
EA Sports UFC features a complex fighting system that allows players to
land strikes or apply vicious submission holds. The control system is very
complicated and accounts for a wide variety of situations that players may
find themselves in when playing the game.
The following is a robust list of the different controls that you will need to
master in the game. This list of controls is taken directly from the digital
manual in the game. For the Xbox One version, you can simply say, “Xbox, Help”
and a menu will be snapped to the side of the screen. This is the digital
manual. The controls can also be found in there if you want to reference them
directly while in the middle of a fight.
Controls for even more specific situations will be found in the in-game manual.

2. Roster
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
UFC is split up into various weight classes. You can only fight with opponents
that are in the same weight class as the fighter that you’ve selected. In the
fighter selection screen, use the triggers to switch between the different
weight classes.
Detailed stats of the fighters can be found by tapping X when a fighter is
highlighted.
Below you will find a comprehensive list of all of the fighters that are
available in the base game. Next to their name will be a series of numbers.
These numbers represent their STU – Standing Up ability, GRN – Ground ability,
and SUB – their submission ability. The numbers from left to right represent
those skills respectively. The fourth number listed represents that fighter’s
overall ability.
Some of the fighters will be in multiple weight classes. They may have
different stats depending on what weight class they’re in, so pay attention to
stats when picking the same fighter in a different weight class.

UNLOCKABLE FIGHTERS
===================
There are two unlockable fighters (as of the time of this writing) that are
available in EA Sports UFC.
The first is Royce Gracie. Royce Gracie is available in the Middleweight
class. You have to purchase him from the store to unlock him.
The other unlockable fighter is Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee is available in the
Welterweight, Lightweight, Featherweight, and Bantamweight classes.
To unlock Bruce Lee for use in the game, you have to purchase the Bruce Lee
Bundle from the store. Alternatively, if you pre-ordered the game, you can
unlock Bruce Lee with a code that would have come with your copy of the game.
Finally, there is one final way to unlock Bruce Lee without spending real
money or without having pre-ordered the game. You can unlock Bruce Lee by
going through the Career Mode on “Pro” difficulty. For more information on
Career Mode, please refer to that section of this guide.

3. Fight Now
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
For those that just want to jump right into the hard-hitting action of UFC,
“Fight Now” is the selection you want to make. Fight Now lets you fight against
the AI or a second player that has a controller on them.
The first thing you need to do is select what color you want to be. If you
want to be the “red” fighter, then move the controller icon to the left side
of the screen. If you want to be the “blue” fighter, move the controller icon
to the right side of the screen.
Once both players have selected their fighter of choice, some more options
will pop up before the actual match starts.
==============
MATCH SETTINGS
==============
The first of which is deciding the match settings. There’s a number of ways to
customize your UFC experience before you head into the fight itself.
First of all, if you are fighting against the AI, you will want to edit the
difficulty setting. These are the different difficulty settings available for
the AI fighters:
Beginner
Easy
Normal
Hard
Pro
There are also three different match types to choose from. 3 rounds, 5 rounds,
or Championship.
In addition, there are two types of round lengths. Accelerated clock is the
most common option; it speeds the game up a bit. Normal obviously uses real
time.

VENUES

The final setting to choose while in the “Match Settings” section before a
fight is where the fight is going to take place. There are a number of
choices to choose from. Here are the different venues available in EA Sports
UFC:
Air Canada Centre
Bell Centre
Chicago Arena
Honda Center
Madison Square Garden
MGM Grand
Prudential Center
Rio Arena
Staples Center
Toyota Center

4. Career
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
For the career mode in EA Sports UFC, you have to either create a new fighter
or import a fighter that you’ve already created. From there, you will begin
your career in the octagon.
========
TRAINING
========
In the first segment of your training, you will be taught strikes. You have to
hit X and Y in order of how the game demands. You need to land 10 different
combos within the time limit in order to earn the highest rank, which is a
black belt ranking.
The second portion of training deals with kicks. Kicks are done with A and B.
Perform the kick combos that are listed within the time to get the highest
ranking possible.
The third set of training deals with blocking. Use the right trigger to block.
You need to earn as many points as possible within the time limit and you earn
points by blocking hits. In order to get the black belt ranking, you have to
get at least 1,000 points.
You’ll then have a short sparring match with your instructor. You are not
scored on this fight. It’s really just so you can put your newly found skills
to the test. It lasts for one round that itself is only one minute long.
After the sparring match, you will be taught grapples. Perform the button
combinations in order to do the various grapple moves. Complete as many as
you are supposed to in order to proceed to the next phase of the training.
After another bit of sparring, you will have to do some takedowns. Perform
the takedowns and as long as you get to 1,000 total points before the time
runs out, you’ll be golden.
Your opponent will put you in a submission next. To get out of a submission,
push the right stick in one of the four directions: up, down, left, or
right. Your goal is to fill up one of those meters in order to escape from the
submission. Your opponent can stop you by also pushing in that direction, so
you will have to switch directions in order to keep trying to break out of
the submission attempt.
Following this, you’ll be taught how to do submissions yourself. Basically,
hold in the right bumper and then move the right stick in a half circle
motion to start the submission. Once the submission starts, you’ll see the
same info as when you are in a submission yourself. However, your goal is a
bit different.
When performing the submission, you want to stop your opponent from filling in
their directionals by moving your own right stick in the same direction that
they are pushing it. Meanwhile, watch for the “L” button to pop up on one of
the directionals. Flick the left stick in that direction when the “L” button
pops up in order to increase the tightness of the submission hold. Do this
until your opponent submits.
Finally, you will have one last sparring match before you join the ranks of
the Ultimate Fighter TV show.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER
====================
The Ultimate Fighter TV show is how you fight and win a contract in the UFC.
The tournament is single elimination, so if you lose a fight, you have to do a
rematch immediately in order to continue.
In between fights, you have the opportunity to continue your fighting lessons.
You will be taught new skills during this, and also have the opportunity to
level up your fighter. I will get more into the attributes and skills that
fighters can have in the “Customize” section of the guide. Refer to that
section for more information and to plan your fighter’s path accordingly.

==========
UFC CAREER
==========
Your actual career will consist of 40 fights total. The more fights you win,
the more likely you will be on the main card at UFC events.
After completing a career, you can restart on a higher difficulty setting to go
for missed achievements or to unlock new characters. Alternatively, you can
start on the highest difficulty setting right off the bat, but I do not
recommend this for first timers.

5. Challenges
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
The Challenges in EA Sports UFC are designed to help you play the game
better. They aren’t challenges in the traditional sense that you expect from
the EA Sports games. Instead they are more or less just drills to help you
better yourself in the game.
The challenges are separated into three main categories. First of all, there
are the Stand-Up challenges. There’s 50 of these, and the Stand-Up Challenges
are split into five sub-categories. Those are Movement, Advanced Stand-Up,
Heavy Bag, Thai Pads, and Blocking.
The second category of challenges are Clinch challenges. There are 20
challenges in this category split between two different sub-categories. The
sub-categories are Clinch Striking and Clinch Control.
The third category of challenges are Ground Challenges. Once again, there’s 20
challenges to be had here. They are split between two different sub-categories.
The sub-categories are Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

6. Online
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
By far the most exciting part of EA Sports UFC is the Online portion. There
are three choices when it comes to the Online mode.
=============
CHAMPIONSHIPS
=============
Essentially, this is the “Ranked” matches. In Championships, you can’t use any
created fighters. Your career record is recorded, and the weight classes you
have used are also recorded, along with the most recent fighter you’ve used
and your record with that fighter.
The Championships are separated into seasons. Every time you complete a season,
you move on to the next. You are promoted by completing matches in the
Championships category, which then earns you points that level you up. Your
ultimate goal is to earn 15 points in order to unlock a belt.
Besides taking part in the basic fights in ranked online, you can also take
place in tournaments that take place at specific points throughout the week.
You can check to see when the next tournament is going to start by checking out
the timer in the Championships mode.
Leaderboards and Awards can also be viewed from here.

=========
RIVALRIES
=========
If you want to get into a rivalry, you need someone on your list of friends
that has the game as well. You can then challenge them to a series of matches
that will encompass your rivalry.
===========
QUICK MATCH
===========
This is the unranked version of online. In this mode, the rules are a lot
more lenient in that you can use created fighters if you so wish.

7. Walkthrough
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
When you first start EA Sports UFC, you are put into a tutorial that is
designed to teach you how to play the game. This tutorial can be accessed
again at any time through the main menus of the game, and it is split into 18
distinct lessons.
========
LESSON 1
========
The first lesson simply teaches you how to move around the octagon. Use the
left stick to accomplish this. Keep moving until the game decides you’ve
walked around enough and are smart enough to use the left analog stick.
========
LESSON 2
========
Next the game will teach you how to perform basic strikes. Strikes are
performed using the face buttons. You can alter the intensity and location of
the strikes using the left analog stick.
========
LESSON 3
========
To work over your opponent’s body, you need to hold the left trigger and then
combine that with face buttons. For increased power behind these attacks, add
left analog stick directionals in with the face buttons.
========
LESSON 4
========
The bumpers also increase the intensity of your strikes. Use the bumpers in
conjunction with the face buttons and directionals to land the most devastating
attacks.
========
LESSON 5
========
Hold the right trigger to block the strikes from the opponent.
========
LESSON 6
========
To block upper attacks specifically, use the right trigger in conjunction with
X or Y. To block lower attacks specifically, use the right trigger in
conjunction with A or B.
========
LESSON 7
========
To initiate a clinch, move the right stick towards the opponent. To get out of
a clinch, click in the left analog stick. Use the bumpers to initiate different
types of clinches.
========
LESSON 8
========
You can transition to different holds in clinches by moving the right analog
stick in a half circle motion. While doing this, you can add in strikes by
using the face buttons.
========
LESSON 9
========
There are a variety of takedowns at your disposal. Half circle motions with the
right analog stick combined with the bumpers and triggers are how you take the
opponents down.
=========
LESSON 10
=========
When on the ground, you can switch around to various positions by moving the
right stick in a half circle motion. Once again, you can add strikes to this
to keep the pressure on the opponent.
=========
LESSON 11
=========
If your opponent tries to take you down, you can block this. Simply hold the
right trigger and then move the right stick down. This will cause you to
either outright dodge the takedown attempt, or break out of the takedown
attempt, whatever the case may be.
=========
LESSON 12
=========
When on the ground, you can defend yourself in a similar manner to how you
defend yourself from takedowns. Once again, hold in the right trigger. Then
flick the right analog stick in the direction that is required in order to
defend from various moves your opponent might make during this part of the
fight.
=========
LESSON 13
=========
To break out of a submission, fill up one of the directionals by holding the
right analog stick in one direction.
=========
LESSON 14
=========
While you are trying to defend from the submission, your opponent will be
trying to keep you from breaking out of the submission. They can freeze your
attempt at filling up one of the directionals by moving their right stick in
that direction as well.
In order to combat this, simply move the right stick in a different direction.
This will force them to change directions as well, so you can move back to the
directional that you will filling up previously and try to fill it up all the
way.
=========
LESSON 15
=========
You can keep yourself from getting put into a submission at all. Use the
right trigger and flick the right analog stick up in order to prevent the
submission from being put on in the first place.
=========
LESSON 16
=========
If you want to put on a submission yourself, first make sure you’re in a good
position for it. Then hold in the right bumper and move the right analog stick
in a half circle motion from the center to the top. For this lesson, you should
let your opponent escape immediately as there is no point in keeping the hold
locked in right now.
=========
LESSON 17
=========
First get a submission on. Then your goal is to tighten the submission. Do
this by flicking the left analog stick in the designated direction when you
are prompted to do so.
=========
LESSON 18
=========
This lesson combines everything that you have learned about submissions so
far. Utilize this information for a “full submission battle”. What this means
is that the whole time that you are trying to lock on a submission, the
opponent will be resisting. You do not have to succeed in this lesson for it
to allow you to progress.

can manage various game settings. You can alter the gameplay settings, audio
settings, visual settings, and more.
You can alter the game controls as well as manage your account.
It is also here where you can find the “Extras” section of the game. There are
two extras to check out. One is the digital game menu. On Xbox One, you can
access this at any point in the game by saying, “Xbox, help”. You can also
view the game credits from here.

==============
CREATE FIGHTER
==============
As soon as you go to create a fighter, you will be asked to “download game
face” if you have the Kinect or PlayStation Camera plugged into your system.
What this does is scan your face and puts it into the game for use. You can
rotate your fighter using the triggers to get a better look at them while you
are editing them.
Creating a fighter is split up into four different sections.
————
GENERAL INFO
————
This section is for editing your fighter’s name, nickname, hometown, age,
weight class, height, and weight.
