With the unique economic system in Path of Exile, it may seem a bit confusing as to how players can get rich in the game. There isn’t any central currency like gold around to accumulate, so you need to know which currency items are most valuable in the game and work to collect more of them, and that’s the start of getting rich here. Whether you’re just starting out or playing your first hardcore character, you’d want to stick around for this one.
First and foremost, you have to be determined in order to actually get rich in the game since it does involve a good bit of grinding in order to get the resources to do this. Since currency items are in themselves useful for crafting as well as for trading, that keeps inflation in check for the most part. However, that also means there’s less to go around, so you have to know what to trade and know when you have to “create” your own wealth instead.
There are certain things you can do at the very start in order to start saving up currency, like keeping all of the gems that you pick up, especially if they are +Quality gems, which are much sought after. If you have a lot of those quality gems in your stash, then go to town and put them up for trade through chat. You may need to dig around to learn which ones are the most in-demand so that you don’t waste too much time in hoping for someone to take your bait.
While you’re waiting and resending your chat message for trade, you can continue to farm until you find someone who sends you a trade request, at which time you should go back to town for the transaction. The same thing goes for items with some really good stats that people might want. You should also keep different rare items for reasons that will become apparent later in this guide.
There is a trading method known to veteran Path of Exile players called flipping, which is also prevalent in other online RPGs. It’s simply buying things for lower than their value, then selling them for higher, which makes you a net profit. The trick here is to find the items that are most in-demand, can be acquired for cheap, and will sell quickly.
Remember that time is a factor in getting rich, so you’d want to move items as quickly as possible for as much currency as you can. These items can be currency items, uniques, and so on. As long as you can find people who are selling them for low prices, you can turn them around and sell them at a higher price.
When you are now able to farm for rare items, you can then move on to the really good wealth-gathering part of the game. Keep picking up those rare items that you can then use for vendor recipes, which will be your money ticket. Vendor recipes are an important part of the game, and you can actually use them to get rich. Not only are they significant for crafting, but you can gain valuable currency items.
If you sell rare items to vendors in other games, you get way less than what you’ll get through trading. That’s something that the developers of Path of Exile seems to be conscious about, so you don’t need to be a trading whiz in order to become wealthy in the game, although trading is still a big part to this process.
Some examples of very profitable vendor recipes are for valuable orbs. If you have rare items of different types in your stash, then now is the time to make use of them. For Chaos Orbs, you need a whole set of rare items that are at least level 60; helm, body armour, gloves, boots, belt, amulet, 2 rings, and either a two-handed weapon, a one-handed weapon with a shield, or two one-handed weapons. This gives you 1 Chaos Orb.
Remember that you can check an item’s level by picking it up with your mouse cursor, then entering “/itemlevel” on chat. If those rare items are all unidentified or 20% quality, then you can get 2 Chaos Orbs. If all of those are identified with 20% quality, then you get 3 Chaos Orbs.
If those items are all below level 60, then you’ll get Orbs of Chance; and if they’re all at least level 75, then you’ll get Regal Orbs. They’re all quite valuable, so you can get rich fast using this method.
