General Tips & Information
- Before the game starts, you will see a window to select certain game settings.
- The game will usually choose the best configuration.
- The display tab has a check box to run the game in windowed mode.
- You will need to manually save your game. Right-click, or escape, to open the menu.
- Select “Save,” then click on an empty slot to save.
- The Options screen allows you to adjust the volumes of voices and sounds.
- You may also turn sub-titles on or off.
- You can play a brief tutorial on movement and inventory interaction at the beginning of the game.
- The magnifying glass icon indicates that you can take a closer look.
- The hand icon signifies you can take an item.
- The gear icon indicates an inventory item is needed.
- Move the mouse to the top portion of the screen to access your inventory.
- Left-click on an item to pick it up and right-click to return the item to your inventory.
- Right-click on an item in your inventory to get a closer view.
- Carol’s journal has an interactive hint system.
- Look at the journal in your inventory and click on an objective to reveal a clue.
- During the game, right-click, or escape, brings you to the menu.
- When the map icon appears in the upper left, another location has been added to the map.
- Locations in green have not yet been visited.
- Select a location to travel there.
Part One
- There are numerous paths that you may follow in this game; this walkthrough will follow the short path laid out by the in-game hints.
- There are many scenes and interactions that are not necessary to complete the game, but are strictly for your enjoyment. Please explore each area.
- The rainiest summer in 26 years has kept Carol indoors, but the sun has just come out!
- Turn around, by clicking to the left or right twice, and exit the kitchen.
- The phone in the hall starts to ring.
- Look at the wall phone and take the CELL PHONE from the shelf.
- Press the green button to answer the call.
- Your neighbor, Oscar asks you to stop by his apartment.
- Turn around and exit the apartment.
- Click on the blue doors to visit Oscar.
- Speak with Oscar thoroughly by selecting all the dialogue choices.
- Oscar, who is a retired doctor, found a body during one of his walks.
- The doctor left the scene to notify the police, but when they returned, the body was gone.
- Exit Oscar’s and you will find yourself at the map for the first time.
- The map suggests a visit to your friend, Stina, but it is not necessary at this time.
- Click on the Allotment.
- Walk forward, turn left, walk forward, turn right, walk forward, turn right, walk forward into the shed and turn right.
- Take the file from the shelf.
- Exit the Allotment and return to the map.
- Click on the Railway Bridge.
- Walk forward three times, turn left, walk forward five times and turn right.
- Look at the ground in front of the cabin to find a torn business card.
- The card has the address 27 Cotton Road, which has now been added to your map.
- Turn the card over to find a telephone number.
- Click on the number to add it to your phone.
- Open your inventory and right-click on the CELL PHONE.
- Select the number to dial it, but there is no answer.
- You may also call the operator; you will get a recording saying the number is not listed.
- Click on the red button to end the call.
- Back out of the close-up scene and turn left.
- Walk forward four times, to the end of the jetty, and turn left.
- Take the silver CIGARETTE CASE from the water.
- Look at the top of the case to see “Milly” engraved.
- Exit The Railway Bridge and return to the map.
- Select 27 Cotton Road on the map.
- Walk forward to enter the building.
- You are stopped by a man who thinks you are the cleaning lady.
- The man tells you to come back with your equipment.
- Exit to the map and select Home.
- Enter the bathroom; the door is in the hall and is marked WC.
- Face left; take the FLOOR MOP and BUCKET.
- Exit to the map and select 27 Cotton Street.
- Walk forward to enter the building; the man will now leave and tell you to lock up.
- Walk forward once and face right.
- Open the door; then take the PENCIL.
- Back out of the room and turn left.
- Walk forward twice; face left and walk forward again.
- Turn to the right; walk forward twice and turn to the left.
- Look at the close-up of the trash can to find a torn up note.
- The object of this mini-game is to reassemble the torn note.
- Left-click to pick up or place a piece.
- Right-click to rotate a piece into position.
- When rotating the pieces, they will not line up exactly.
- Piecing together the note gives us Milly’s address: Vivace Road 35.
- Exit the building to the map and select Milly’s Apartment.
- Talk to Milly thoroughly by selecting each of the dialogue choices.
- You learn that her ex-boyfriend, Edvin Vergerus, had been in prison and robbed Milly’s apartment of jewelry and valuable trinkets.
- Milly suggests that you speak with Edvin’s parents, because he stayed there after getting evicted.
- From the map, select Edvin’s Parents’ Apartment.
- Speak with Edvin’s father and learn that he did not come home last night as he usually does.
- The police were informed but did not seem to care, according to Mr. Vergerus.
- Edvin was arrested a few weeks ago for trespassing, and Mr. Vergerus wonders if it has anything to do with his disappearance.
- Mr. Vergerus gives you permission to search the apartment for clues.
- Face right and walk forward twice.
- Turn left and open the yellow door to the guest room.
- Face left and open the left cabinet.
- Look at the carved wood box.
- You can click on some of the inlaid squares to change their color.
- You do not have the solution to this puzzle yet.
- Exit the cupboard, turn right and walk forward.
- Face left and open the door with the blanket on it.
- You are now in the laundry room.
- Face left, walk forward, then face left.
- Pick up and read Edvin’s “To Do” list.
- Exit the note and turn around.
- Look at the papers on the bed.
- The first is a drawing of a building by Edvin.
- Click on the drawing to view the second paper.
- The second paper is a letter from Erickson Apartment Rentals asking for the return of the final key.
- Exit the papers and face left.
- Walk forward and turn right.
- Walk forward twice, turn right and exit to the map.
Part Two
- Select Milly’s Apartment.
- Talk to Millie thoroughly.
- She does not know the location of Edvin’s apartment, but thinks his Parole Officer may know.
- The Parole Officer is Ben Dorner, chairman of the bicycle club; Milly gives you his telephone number.
- When asked about the key, Milly suggested looking behind pictures of women, as Edvin liked to hide things there.
- Exit to the map.
- Right-click on the CELL PHONE in your inventory.
- Click on the new telephone number to call Ben.
- Ben asks you to meet him at the Riverside Café to discuss Edvin.
- Select the red button to end the call.
- Select the Riverside Café on the map.
- Ben is the man who mistook you for the cleaning lady earlier.
- You are not recognized, but he feels he has seen you before.
- Ben dismisses the trespassing charge as a drunken prank.
- Ben gives you the address to Edvin’s old apartment.
- Exit to the map and return to Edvin’s Parents’ house.
- Walk forward three times; turn left and open the yellow door.
- Turn right and look at the portrait of the woman with the black hat.
- Remove the PAINTING and take the KEY.
- Replace the PAINTING on the wall and exit the close-up view.
- Exit to the map and select Edvin’s Old Apartment.
- Walk forward and enter the building.
- Face left; use the key to unlock the apartment.
- Turn left; walk forward and face right.
- Open the cupboard under the sink.
- Click on the stack of papers for a close-up view.
- Click on the white piece of paper to read Edvin is ordered to report to court regarding trespassing at the Berlin Foundry.
- Exit the close-up under the sink and turn right.
- Walk forward three times and face right.
- Open the door and take the STEPLADDER.
- Turn to the right and walk forward.
- Turn twice to the left and place the STEPLADDER on the ground.
- Walk up the ladder and face right.
- Try to open the fuse box, but you will need another tool.
- Face right and go forward three times.
- Turn left, walk forward and turn to the right twice.
- Take the TOILET ROLL WITH CHRISTMAS MOTIF.
- Exit to the map and select Stina’s Bakery.
- Ask Stina about the Berling foundry and she recommends you visit the library.
- When you return to the map, select the Library.
- Turn to the right and look at the close-up view of the right workstation.
- Select the mouse to activate the database.
- Read the Berling foundry article to learn that a man was allegedly murdered in a ritual there by the Madonna cult, which was led by Hugo Berling, the head of the foundry.
- Click on the red “Madonna Cult” link to open another article.
- Read both pages of the article on the Madonna Cult for more information on the murder and the cult.
- Click on the “next” arrow to move to the second page; click on the “previous” arrow to return to the first page.
- Click on the red “the water tunnel at Hammer Hill” to open another article.
- Read the article on the water tunnel to find its location.
- Click the “X” to exit the article; then back out of the workstation.
- Exit to the map and select the Berling Foundry.
- Look at the hole in the fence and enter the foundry.
- Walk forward five times and turn right.
- Walk forward twice and turn right.
- Click on the double steel doors to enter the building.
- Walk forward four times; turn left and walk forward twice.
- Face right; walk forward twice and turn left.
- Walk forward twice and turn left.
- Walk up the stairs.
- Face left; walk forward.
- Turn left; walk forward; then turn to the right.
- Take the HOOK from the shelf.
- Leave the floor and take the stairs to the bottom.
- Turn right, walk forward twice, turn right and walk forward again.
- Face left; walk forward four times and turn left.
- Walk forward twice and turn to the left.
- You will see an enclosed office area with turquoise paint.
- Walk forward; turn left and walk forward again.
- Look at the note on the bulletin board to gain a new location: the Train Repair Depot.
- The note is from Max Vogler, one of the surviving members of the Madonna Cult.
- Exit the office and turn right.
- Walk forward twice and face left.
- Look inside the storage hut and take the SHORT SCREWDRIVER.
- Exit the hut; turn right and walk forward twice to leave the building.
- Exit to the map and select Edvin’s Old Apartment.
- Return to the fuse box and climb the ladder.
- Turn right and look at the close-up of the fuse box.
- Try to use the SHORT SCREWDRIVER on the screw, but it will not work.
- Inside your inventory, use the FILE on the SHORT SCREWDRIVER to make the SHARP EDGED SCREWDRIVER.
- Use the SHARP EDGED SCREWDRIVER to remove the screw.
- Inside the box, take the note.
- The note sounds like Edvin was suspicious of Milly.
- Exit the apartment.
- While you are leaving, you receive a text message from Jonas, asking you to meet him at the Leonardo Diner.
- Exit to the map and return to Milly’s Apartment.
- The door has been left open for the cleaning lady.
- Enter the apartment and turn left.
- Walk forward and turn right.
- Look at something sticking out from under the bed.
- Look at the painting to see it is still wet.
- Click to open the black box.
- Take the SHARP KNIFE.
- Click to close the black box.
- Exit to the map and select the Leonardo Diner.
- Talk to Jonas and learn he needs your ticket to the convention.
- Return home; walk forward and face to the right.
- Take the pink envelope.
- Click on Jonas’ note to find the INVITATION.
- Exit the apartment and return to the Leonardo Diner.
- You give Jonas the INVITATION; then you are automatically returned to the map.
- Select the Train Repair Depot.
- Walk forward three times and see the building that Edvin had sketched.
- Walk forward, left, forward, left, forward, and turn right.
- Speak to the janitor thoroughly to learn that Edvin worked at the depot part time.
- The janitor has the telephone number for Max Vogler’s son, but he lost his phone at the Tower Remains.
- Turn left, walk forward, turn right, and walk forward four times.
- Look inside the grate to see the JANITOR’S MOBILE PHONE.
- Turn around and your phone starts ringing.
- Click on the green button to answer the phone.
- Edvin’s father is calling to give you access to the apartment again.
Part Three
- Exit to the map and select Edvin’s Parents’ Apartment.
- Select the note on the table.
- Edvin’s father has left half a bottle of wine for you.
- Exit the note and walk forward.
- Turn to the right and walk forward twice.
- Turn right again and open the cupboard.
- Take the KEY FROM CUPBOARD.
- Exit the cupboard and turn left.
- Use the key to open the balcony door.
- Turn left and walk to the end of the balcony.
- Look at the painting on the wall, making note of the colors and lock.
- Exit the balcony; walk forward twice and turn right.
- Walk forward twice; turn right and open the door.
- Turn around and look at the sewing table.
- Take the SEWING THREAD.
- Exit the bedroom and walk forward into the guest room.
- Turn left and open the left cabinet.
- Look at the puzzle box.
- Click on the squares to make the box match the painting on the balcony.
- Click on the lower left square to open the box.
- Inside the box are a MAGNETIC STRIPE CARD and the LETTER FROM EDVIN’S BOX.
- The letter is from Abel to Joss and states that there is a map at the foundry showing where they have hidden “stuff.”
- Exit the apartment and return to the Train Repair Depot.
- Walk to the Tower Remains.
- Combine the HOOK with the SEWING THREAD to make the SEWING THREAD WITH HOOK ATTACHED.
- Use the SEWING THREAD WITH HOOK ATTACHED on the JANITOR’S MOBILE PHONE.
- Walk back to the janitor and give him the JANITOR’S MOBILE PHONE.
- After you return his phone, the janitor remembers he lost his notebook with the phone’s unlock code at the silos.
- Exit to the map and return to the foundry.
- Enter through the hole in the fence.
- Walk forward three times; turn right and enter the building.
- Walk forward twice; turn left and walk forward twice more.
- Turn right and walk forward twice.
- Walk forward through the right door and walk forward once more.
- Look at the close-up view of the bag of cement.
- Use the SHARP KNIFE on the bag of cement and take some CEMENT POWDER.
- Exit to the map and select the Silos.
- Walk forward twice, turn left and walk forward again.
- Turn around and go up the ladder.
- Face to the right and try the ladder, but it is too slippery.
- Use the CEMENT POWDER on the ladder rungs.
- Climb up the ladder.
- Unfortunately, you cannot leave the ladder to get the JANITOR’S NOTEBOOK.
- Use the SEWING THREAD WITH HOOK ATTACHED on the JANITOR’S NOTEBOOK.
- Oops! You knocked the JANITOR’S NOTEBOOK off the edge.
- Climb down the two ladders to the ground.
- Face to the left and walk forward.
- Turn right; walk forward twice and turn left.
- Take the LADDER.
- Turn left and walk forward twice.
- Place the LADDER to the right of the broken one.
- Climb up the ladders and face right.
- Walk forward; face right and climb up a short ladder.
- Turn right and walk forward.
- Take the JANITOR’S NOTEBOOK.
- Exit to the map and select the Train Repair Depot.
- Go back to the janitor and return the JANITOR’S NOTEBOOK.
- The janitor gives you Emil Vogler’s address.
- Exit to the map and select Emil Vogler’s Home.
- Talk to Emil thoroughly and you will get the NEWSPAPER ARTICLE FROM EMIL.
- You learn of a new location, the Shrine, which is near the mine.
- From the map, select the Shrine.
- Walk forward twice; turn right, and walk forward twice again.
- Face left; take the CHISEL from the pile of bricks.
- Return to the map and select the Berling Foundry.
- Enter through the hole in the fence.
- Walk forward three times and turn right.
- Walk forward to enter the building.
- Walk forward three times; turn left, walk forward, and face to the right.
- Use the CHISEL on the “band-aid thingie” from Joss’ letter.
- Take and read the MESSAGE FROM BEHIND THE FIRST AID KIT.
- Learn that Abel hid the merchandise under the floor in his welding cubicle.
- Abel also suspects Ben Dorner, so he made an impression of his house key.
- Look at the second piece of paper to find a map to the mine.
- Click on the map drawing to add the location to your map.
- Exit to the map and select the Mine.
- Taking the left path, walk forward eight times and turn left.
- Walk forward; turn left and walk forward again.
- Open the door and take the CROWBAR.
- Back out of the room and turn around.
- Walk forward; turn right, and walk forward six times.
- Face to the right and take the BRICK.
- Exit to the map and go to Stina’s Bakery.
- Stina gives you the NEWSPAPER CLIPPING FROM STINA.
- Edvin’s body was found in the river, missing its heart.
- You are automatically returned to the map.
- Select Oscar’s apartment.
- Oscar recognizes the location of the crime scene from the clipping.
- You are automatically returned to the map.
- Select Where the Body Was Found.
- Walk forward seven times and turn left.
- Take the RUBBER GLOVES.
- Exit to the map and select the Train Repair Depot.
- Walk to the building the janitor is normally near.
- Use the MAGNETIC STRIPE CARD to open the door.
- Look at the area just above the printer.
- Take the LETTER FROM BEN DORNER.
- Learn where his office is and that he was supplying drugs to Edvin.
- Look just to the left of the blue binders and take the INSULATING TAPE.
- Exit to the map and return to the Berling Foundry.
- Enter through the hole in the fence.
- Walk forward five times; turn right, and walk forward twice.
- Turn to the right and enter the building through the steel doors.
- Walk forward four times and turn left.
- Enter the right door and face to the left.
- Look at the close-up of the right switch box.
- Use the RUBBER GLOVES on the loose wire at the top of the box.
- Once the wire is in place, use the INSULATING TAPE to secure it.
- After the wire is repaired, flip the lever on the switch box.
- Back out of the close-up view and turn right.
- Walk forward, turn left, walk forward, and turn right.
- The dark room now has light.
- Walk forward twice, turn left, and walk forward twice again.
- Face to the left and walk forward.
- Look at the close-up of the floor plates.
- Use the CROWBAR on the metal plates.
- Take the KEY IMPRESSION and the COCAINE.
- Exit the foundry to the map and select the Police station.
- Walk forward and Carol will give the COCAINE to the police.
- You are automatically returned to the map.
- Select Ben Dorner’s office.
- Look at the close-up of the key pad and enter 1024.
- Back out of the close-up and open the door.
- Go up the stairs, turn left, go forward and turn left again.
- Walk forward, turn left twice, and enter the office.
- Look at the trash can to find a note.
- You learn that Ben is on vacation.
- Exit the office; turn left and walk forward.
- Turn left, enter the office, and turn left again.
- Take the NOTE WITH STRANGE CODE off the blue and white book.
- Use the PENCIL on the NOTE WITH STRANGE CODE to see some strange markings.
- Exit the office and return to the ground floor of the building.
- Enter the elevator and face left.
- Look at the close-up of the elevator buttons.
- Compare the Braille on the buttons to the NOTE WITH STRANGE CODE.
- The note reads 4-0-7-0-6-0.
- Exit the elevator, walk upstairs and turn left.
- Walk forward; face to the left and walk forward again.
- Open the door to find the safe.
- Look at the close-up view of the safe.
- Use the combination from the NOTE WITH STRANGE CODE.
- Turn the dial left to 40, right to 70, then left to 60.
- Open the blue folder.
- You can see on the page that Ben Dorner’s address is 13 Rover Drive.
- Exit to the map.
Part Four
- Select the Water Tunnel.
- Walk forward; turn left and walk forward again.
- Turn right and look at the pile of litter.
- Take the SUPER GLUE.
- Exit to the map and select Ben Dorner’s House.
- Open your inventory and combine the SUPER GLUE and the KEY IMPRESSION.
- You now have a KEY MADE OF GLUE.
- Walk to the front door and use the KEY MADE OF GLUE.
- Click on the door to enter the house.
- Turn right and go upstairs.
- Walk forward into the office.
- Look at the close-up of the stacked trays.
- Find the PAPER FROM BEN DORNER’S APARTMENT.
- Walk down the stairs; turn right and walk forward.
- Turn left and take the KEY FROM BEN DORNER’S HOUSE.
- The key tag is labeled “cellar & cinema.”
- Face left and walk forward.
- Turn right and walk forward twice into the kitchen.
- Turn right and look at the note on the counter.
- Ben lost his cell phone in the cellar.
- Walk forward twice and open the porch door.
- Turn right, walk forward three times, and turn to the right twice.
- Walk forward and use the KEY FROM BEN DORNER’S HOUSE to open the cellar door.
- Walk forward, turn left, walk forward, and turn left again.
- Use your cell phone to call the number from the torn business card that you found at the Railway Bridge.
- You hear a ringing.
- Right-click to exit your cell phone.
- Look under the sink and to the right.
- Click to view a close-up.
- Take BEN DORNER’S EXTRA PHONE.
- Press the green button twice on the phone to hear a message from Edvin.
- Edvin asks for medical help after taking some drugs.
- Pick up the METAL BUTTON.
- Exit the close-up; turn left and walk forward.
- Face to the right, walk forward, and face right again.
- Open the green door.
- Turn around and open the blue cabinet.
- Take the small, gold casket from the top shelf.
- Place the METAL BUTTON in the empty hole.
- Look at the PAPER FROM BEN DORNER’S APARTMENT.
- Push the buttons in numerical order according to the PAPER FROM BEN DORNER’S APARTMENT.
- Inside, you find the LETTER FROM HUGO BERLING to Ben asking him to scare, but not harm, Abel.
- There is also a CEREMONIAL DOCUMENT that describes the three stages of the rites of passage.
- Beneath the documents in the box are three keys.
- Take the RED KEY, the BLUE KEY, and the GREEN KEY.
- Exit to the map and return to the Shrine.
- Walk forward twice; turn right and walk forward twice again.
- Face left and walk forward four times; then face left again.
- Look at the CEREMONIAL DOCUMENT to see what path to take.
- Move to the “X” by walking: forward- forward-left-forward-right-forward-left-forward-right.
- Use the CHISEL to chip away the moss.
- Look at the plate you have uncovered; it is unreadable.
- Use the TOILET ROLL WITH CHRISTMAS MOTIF to clean the plate.
- The plate reads, “The key to the keys is at the turn of the tunnel.”
- Exit to the map and select the Water Tunnel.
- Walk forward; turn left and walk forward three times.
- Turn left, go forward, and turn left again.
- Walk forward seven times and look at the colored numbers overhead.
- Click on the numbers and Carol will make a note of the NUMBERS FROM TUNNEL.
- Exit to the map and head to the Mine.
- Walking on the left path, move forward four times and face to the left.
- Look at the note with the NUMBERS FROM TUNNEL.
- Place the BLUE KEY in the center keyhole.
- Place the GREEN KEY in the lower keyhole.
- Place the RED KEY in the upper keyhole.
- The keys will not stay in the keyholes; after you apply them, return each key to inventory.
- Walk down the stairs.
- Turn left and see the painting you found under Milly’s bed.
- Look at the close-up of the painting.
- Exit to the map and go to Milly’s Apartment.
- Talk to Milly and learn that she is the daughter of Abel Kant.
- Ben Dorner commissioned two paintings from Milly.
- She still has the SKETCH FROM BEN DORNER and gives it to you.
- You are returned to the map automatically.
- Select the mine and return to the door with the three keyholes.
- You will need to unlock the door again.
- Place the BLUE KEY in the center keyhole.
- Place the GREEN KEY in the lower keyhole.
- Place the RED KEY in the upper keyhole.
- The keys will not stay in the keyholes; after you apply them, return each key to inventory.
- Go down the stairs and face right so you are looking at the bricked up altar.
- Look at the SKETCH FROM BEN DORNER.
- Use the BRICK to push in the three bricks missing from the painting.
- Pick up the chalice and click twice to move the dirt around.
- Edvin’s missing fingers were used as an offering.
- Talk to Ben, he wants to know if you told anybody anything.
- Take the CEMENT POWDER and throw it in his eyes.
- Quickly walk forward and you will automatically exit the mine and call the police.
- The police catch Ben before he can make his escape.
- The paper writes a splendid article on your solving the case.
- Well, since summer is over, so much for taking care of the allotment.
- There is always next year.
