While most Texas Hold-em strategies are purely statistical, the one quirk of the game that can throw off all mathematical logic is bluffing. However, using bluffing in conjunction with a well trained mind that can calculate odd at every turn of the cards, can be a dangerous combination for your opponents. It's also a good way to get to know your opponents. When you start bluffing (and when you get away with it), you are in control of the table.
Knowing Thy Odds.
The first part of the art of bluffing is really a science. In order to be an effective Texas Hold-em player you have to know all the odds for every turn of the cards. If you are not a mathematical genius, don't worry, there is a solution for you. The first way to train your mind is to memorize the odds. Simply download a Texas Hold-em odds chart and spend time to memorize possible outcomes with each turn of the cards. Next, play your friends with your odd chart handy so you can get use to different playing scenarios. If you don't have a regular gang to play with that will let you use your chart, try using while playing against the computer or online (if you live in a country that allows online play).
When to Bluff
The most important thing that bluffing provides is the inability for your opponents to accurately read your playing style. It other words ?it throws them off. The safest place to start bluffing in when you are playing a low stakes game. A lot of players that play low stakes games are usually unseasoned players that are extra careful for every move. It's easy to bully them from their chips when large raises or all in moves are presented to them. Low stakes games are also a good place to test your ability to calculate odds. Even a low stakes player with a decent hand, may call your bluff if they have pocket aces.
The next place to bluff is at the beginning of a game, when your opponents are not use to you yet. At this point most players are still feeling the table out and getting comfortable with their surroundings. Sometimes it's best to use this blitzkrieg tactic early, to give yourself a large chip domination early on.
Make Small Talk
Again, the purpose of bluffing is to ultimately gain control of the table. Not just in chip count, but also in terms of the table psychology. One way to get into the minds of the other players is to make small talk. Start disturbing their thought process by asking them questions about the game or even about a recent sporting events. You will get a sense of their nervousness, or even of their perception of the current game at hand. This can be valuable information for you to determine what kind of player you are up against.
The Hardest Time to Bluff
When you are low on chips and you are near the end of the game. Pulling all-ins at this point is very risky. It's easy for your opponents to match your call and easily wipe you out. But sometimes it's your only chance!
