When I bought a PlayStation 4 last year I was extremely disappointed when I saw assassins creed 4 in action, my mind was blown, how could this be next gen. I thought up scaling could be what gives last gen the boost everyone wanted from next gen that we didn't receive. up scaling was the unsung hero of last gen games boosting their visual quality to obvious higher levels such as Ninja Gaiden 2 on the Xbox 360 which was sub HD (below 720p) but looked much better rendered with up scaling. Could 4k up scaling on the next gen consoles have blown us away and demonstrated to gamers a huge graphical leap as in other new console generations in the past?
current gen consoles are aiming at 1080p as a standard but are falling short sometimes with games like battle field 4 and even dead rising 3 rendering at 720p.How can the new consoles shock us with graphics when their maximum resolution isn't much higher or in some cases the same as the last gen. They can impress us with more particle effects and bigger game worlds which may seem good enough but I think most games are too big with too much filler making for drawn out slow paced games that become a chore to play and this includes all my favorite games, designers are forced to prioritize quantity over quality. Lets take Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim, A game I enjoy but can't help notice I'm fighting the same 3 enemies for more than 3 missions, that's unacceptable, game design is not so good these days. Bigger games, better special effects, and I almost forgot;better lighting is the draw of current gen, not a higher resolution. When I play PlayStation 2 games on an emulator and upscale the graphics with the emulator's built in up scaling the graphics improve dramatically even though my display doesn't support the higher settings, yet the graphics are still displayed, If the new current Gen consoles had incorporated this type of up scaling people would have been stunned by the difference.
Next gen consoles look good but they could look a lot better and right now my Xbox 360 looks way better than a ps4 or Xbox one. The true next gen upgrade isn't from consoles its from other hardware: 4k TVs and a video processor or A/V (audio Video) receiver with 4k up scaling. Ever since my disappointment with current gen I just wanted to see my old games super up scaled such as Ninja Gaiden 2, Devil may cry 4, and Lollipop chainsaw, then I could wait to the end of this current generation and buy all the games I want for 10 to 20 dollars each or less. I played ninja Gaiden 2 and devil may cry all day and went to sleep early in the morning and I'm stunned at what the 4k up scaling via the A/V receiver and 4k Vizio (p series) has done for the graphics of last gen consoles, once the up scaling is on at 4k it's like if the graphics come alive some how.I don't understand why the current gen consoles didn't make a deal with a company to incorporate their video processing chips and bring 4k to the table like Seiki did with their recent HDMI up scaling cable. I know up scaled 4k is not the same as native 4k but its still amazing compared to native 1080p and especially up scaled from 1080p to 4k. When you upscale 1080p to 4k the result is literally breathtaking and truly next gen no matter which console you upscale from.
