Now that players all over the Americas and anyone on that server can play Greater Rifts on Diablo 3 RoS thanks to Patch 2.1 going Live, we've managed to understand more how this tiered dungeon works. I previously reported on how to get into Greed's realm here, since it's the best new mechanic of the game for me. Now, it's time to take a look at my next favorite-Greater Rifts.
There are basically 2 reasons for any player to want to play Greater Rifts. Invest time and gear into this mechanic unless you want the following:
Your name on the leaderboards for group or solo rifts with best time
Acquiring and upgrading Legendary Gems
If you're farming gear, Greater Rifts may not be the best way to do so. While the Greater Rift Guardian has higher chances to drop Legendary Items than normal Rift Guardians or any other monster outside the game, there are still chances for you to get all yellows and blues--this has happened to me.
No sense not optimizing Diablo 3 RoS Patch 2.1
Still, there's no sense in not optimizing your Greater Rift experience and at the same time stamping your name on the leaderboards. If you can get gear at the same time, why not?
So here are some Diablo 3 RoS Patch 2.1 tips and tricks I've put together after more than 10 hours of Greater Rifts:
Farm your keystones to have continuous runs.
This serves two purposes. The gold payout in Greater Rifts is abysmal so farming keystones and money before Greater Rift runs can help you repair your items and keep the fun continuous.
Teleport out of the Realm of Trials once you get in.
Don't kill anything in the Realm of Trials and instead teleport out and wait for the Wave to end. This starts you at Greater Rift Level 1 and lets you fight more Greater Rift Guardians for marginally more loot with no skin off your knuckles.
Immunities are the way to tank.
The game does eventually kill you no matter how high your Toughness or Damage is. Blackthorne and Countess Julia's Cameo just got a lot more important. Still, there will come a time when charge attacks and Angel swipes rake down half your life.
Your path through the Greater Rift is always the next floor.
Don't waste your time hunting all the elite packs on a Diablo 3 RoS Patch 2.1 Greater Rift floor. If you've found the door to the next floor, take it. There are always monsters there.
Movement speed should be maxed.
You can fail a Greater Rift if you have low movement speed and the monsters are thin on the ground. Maximizing your movement speed (25% all the time except for monks) can help you get to the next floor with denser monsters and better kill rate.
You can socket and/or leave your Legendary Gems in your stash and Urshi can still upgrade them.
Unlike normal gems, your Legendary Gems can be left in your stash or socketed into one of your gear and still get the upgrade. Since she does it magically, she doesn't need to remove them, I supposed.
Choose your mobs and enemies.
Stragglers and less than three generic monsters aren't worth the trouble. But if you have big mobs (even with generic monsters), kill as much as you can. Always go for the elites and pick up the extra purple globes.
