We've all heard about them. The pro's, the con's, and practically anything in between. Question is: Which One is Better?
MMO's have been out on the market for quite some time. In fact, NeverWinter Nights was the first text-based MMO out there. Released in 1991, the game boasted a cool 115,000 players. This is very suprising because they charged $10 an hour to play.(adjusted for inflation) The game introduced the aspects of an MMO to the world. Crafting, events, and skill based progression to name a few. Since then, there have been many MMO's released. There have been good ones, bad ones, and the innovative ones. Especially the following title.
On November 23, 2004. World of Warcraft was born, and it was mind-blowing. The game was like Cecil B. Demille's movies. Large, Expansive, and Unique. World of Warcraft revolutionized MMO's and set the standard for future ones.
Any MMO that comes out is compared to WoW(World of Warcraft). How it's similar, how it differs, every aspect of it is compared to WoW. Even after 7 years, WoW is 14 million subscribers strong. At $15 per player, that is a fortune. With three expansions out already, Blizzard is releasing new content every 3 months to keep player's hooked. All in all, you have to give props to Blizzard for having such an outstanding game. The skill trees, the dynamic features, end-game content, all of that is what makes World of Warcraft a unique experience. MMO's may be heard to get into, but once you're in, you're in for good.
On March 1st, 2011. A new game came into the competition: RIFT: Planes of Telara. This ''dynamic'' fantasy MMO hhad what could be considered a recipe for success. They grabbed the generic aspect of an MMO and built on top of that. This is where RIFT made the difference. They paid attention to every detail, no matter how miniscule it was, in the entire game. The character customization, building schematics, scenery, the whole thing. They fixed what Blizzard overlooked in their game and refined it into something unique. This is why RIFT is both unique and innovative.
If it is storyline you are looking for then you would have no problem playing either on this basis. Both games have an intruiging storyline. One that captures the player and also keeps them there, imagining the possibilities. Both have great quality content and addicting gameplay. But now we go back to my first question. Which one is better? The answer is simple; perspective. It depends on what you are looking for in a game. I play both WoW and RIFT and I find both to be great games and both are worth playing. However, I would have to side with WoW because of the specific storyline. I grew up with the warcraft universe. It is my childhood. I prefer WoW because it offers more content and more levels. Which one is better? Choose for yourself based on what I wrote. It all comes down to which experience do you want? Adventures in Azeroth or Questing in Telara?
Of course, leveling in both these games can be quite tedious. I recommend you carry a game guide with you wherever you go. I recommend one for RIFT and one for World of Warcraft. Since RIFT does not allow add-ons, this guide is in PDF format but the valuable information is worth it. However, the WoW guide that I have put is an add-on.
