If you're a newbie to deck building games and you're looking for some suggestions on what to play, then I have some recommendations for you. I have 2 deck builders that I regularly play with my friends when we get together, Dominion and Marvel Legendary. They both are deck builders, but they go about it differently.
1.) Dominion
This game is my top recommendation for new players. It's fast to play, easy to learn and is incredibly deep since you can find a number of ways to win each time you play. The goal of the game is to have the most land cards in your deck at the end of the game. To get them you have to build up your player deck with different action, treasure, and attack cards that will allow you enough money in a turn to get them.
Each player starts out with 7 copper cards and 3 estate land cards. There will be the same preset treasure and land cards available to buy every game. Where the game changes is in the 10 action cards that are available to buy. You can pick them out, select them randomly or whatever you want.
Anyway you choose to do it you will have 10 stacks of special player cards that you can buy to give you bonuses that let you play more cards and give you more money. Each round you can play only 1 action and buy 1 card unless a card you play says otherwise.
This is where the variety of the game kicks in because with 10 different special cards in front of you to choose from you can win any number of different ways. You can build a strategy around a few of them and go for it. I definitely recommend this game for new players. Dominion is the first deck builder I learned on and I still love it. It also keeps expanding so you can always extend it.
2.) Marvel Legendary
This game is obviously a bit more superhero themed, but is still a cool deck building game. This is a co-op style deck builder where the players work together to stop masterminds like Loki, Red Skull, etc. from completing their evil schemes to ruin the world.
Players will choose a mastermind, a scheme, and henchmen to build out a villain deck with for setup. Then you will select 5 hero card stacks (heroes like the Avengers, X-men, etc) to shuffle together to create the hero deck. Players start out with 12 cards, 4 cards with 1 attack, and 8 cards with 1 buy.
Each turn a player will draw a card from the villain deck, resolve it and then play his hand out. The player then can add up his attack points and attack as many villains as he wants and then add up his buy points and buy as many cards as he wants.
Hero cards to buy are drawn from the hero deck at random and there is 5 spots for cards. So, you randomly have 5 cards to pick from to build your player deck with. Play proceeds until the mastermind is defeated or he accomplishes his scheme.
This game is pretty cool because you have the attack element, a co-op element, the hero cards are random so you can't build a strategy on what you're going to buy. There's plenty of variation with both the schemes and the heroes to make the game fresh every time you play.
So, I would totally recommend either Dominion or Marvel Legendary for newbies looking for deck building games to try. I have full reviews on my You Should Play This site as well as special links to Amazon for amazing deals on these games.
