To someone who's never played Plants VS Zombies before, it seems like a ridiculous idea. Ok, it is a ridiculous idea. Plants fighting with zombies. It sounds like a terrible idea for a B-horror movie - and according to PopCap, the distributor for the game, they've received several movie deal offers already.
The game was originally designed for Mac and Windows, though now it's available on many platforms including the iPhone, Playstation, Xbox, and soon to be available for Android. I've only played it on a laptop so I can't say what the game play is like on a mobile device, but I think the word AWESOME pretty much sums up how great the game is.
Ok, it's no technological masterpiece, but it will go down as one of the most classic games of the decade. When I think of classic video games I played in the 90's, I think of Final Fantasy, Golden Eye, Tomb Raider, and Sonic. When I look back on the 2000's, I will think of Plants VS Zombies.
The idea is that you're the owner of a house and Zombies are coming to get you. You've got to strategically plant different kinds of plants to fight the zombies. They each have different abilities, ranging from shooting peas, blowing up, defending, and turning the zombies again each other. The zombies slows plow their way through your plants if you can't kill them in time. They too have different strengths and abilities including jumping, swimming, and some even have a bucket on their head which makes them harder to kill!
Ok, along with the rather cartoon-y graphics, is looks like a child's game, but it's something akin to Tetris, that what looks simple, done really fast, is actually quite hard. The longer you play, the more you want to find out. As you play Plants VS Zombies, Crazy Dave (the local shop owner) gives you different types of plants and explains different nuances about new levels.
I am not an avid video game player. In fact, I haven't played for many years. I swore I'd never play such a stupid game like "Plants VS Zombies". I played it for the first time to day and spend 5 hours at it.
5 hours.
Many reviews of the game in popular PC gaming magazines talk about the "addictive nature" of the game and how great the replay value is. They are not lying. Plants VS Zombies really is a surprising fun game.
