In March 2005, an event took place that would change the way games would be seen forever. Sony Computer Entertainment finally released an action game that would change the landscape for the PlayStation 2 forever, God of War. Up until the first God of War would be released, the best game I had played on any PlayStation, this included the PlayStation One, was Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2. Metal Gear Solid had everything an action game needed, and sure most people were fans of Tomb Raider but not me, I was a Metal Gear Solid fan up until March 2005 when Kratos uttered the words: ' The gods of Olympus have abandoned me, '.
Now for those of you who are not gamers or who have for some reason not played God of War, the story basically surrounds Kratos, a Spartan General. Like all Spartans, Kratos was a man who enjoyed war to such an effect that he became the Greek mythology god of war, Ares' favourite general. After leading his armies to various victories, Kratos' army later get outnumbered by a horde of barbarians, as the king of the barbarians is about to land his last blow, Kratos pleads with Ares to save him. Ares saves Kratos, by binding the blades of chaos on Kratos' arms, in return Kratos pledges himself to the God of War's will.
However Ares sends Kratos on a path of destruction that ultimately results in Kratos slaughtering his own family. Out of anger and hatred for his former master Kratos then turns on a path of vengeance that leads him on his on quest to find and murder the God of War.With the help of Athena, Kratos goes on quest and faces various monsters from Greek mythology, like the Hydra, or Medusa the Gorgon. This action adventure game was one of the first to introduce combo button sequences, where a player would be prompted to hit a certain button that would allow Kratos to hit certain combo attacks on creatures.
When I played this game for the first time, I managed to finish it within 3 days of getting it, during that time most people were losing sleep over Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, however I was losing sleep over God of War, because I simply could not put the game down, each time I reached a checkpoint, I would think, "okay its fine I'll just play till next check point.", before I knew it 6 hours would pass and I would be further. Sony had outdone themselves with that game, so much so that after I finished the game, the only action games that would eventually be better than God of War, would be God of War 2 and God of War 3. Therefore I hope that the prequel, God of War Ascension will be the best Action-Adventure game ever.
