The Differences Between Dsi And 3ds

There are various editions of the Nintendo DS handheld gaming system in the market that it is sometimes difficult understanding the differences between the editions of the console. From it’s first release of the DS in 2004, Nintendo has gone on to produce three redesigns of the DS namely : DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL and a new line of handheld gaming consoles known as the 3DS ( or DS 3 in some quarters). In today’s review our focus will be helping you understand what the differences are between the DSi and 3DS.

Games

This is one of the major differences between the two systems. When the Dsi was released back then in 2008, Nintendo chose not to provide backward compatibility for GB and GBA titles. However with the launch of the 3DS, Nintendo has had a change of mind providing support for all DS titles (including those released on the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance consoles). Please note that to download and play these titles, you would need a Wi-Fi connection a well as be willing to part with some cash.

Screen Display

One of the main selling points of the this new line of console is the fact that gameplay is now in 3D display without the need for glasses or any additional accessories. This is in contrast to the older console which can only display your gameplay in 2D mode.

Console Motion

With the new line of console comes two types of motion sensors that is unique to the system: the gyroscope and accelerometer. These sensors allow gamers to play games by tilting the console from side to side and up and down. An example of such a game utilizing these sensors is the Star Fox 64 3D. What this means is that there are certain types of games that will be available on the new line of console but completely absent on the older system.

Cameras

Not only does this new line of console display games in 3D, it can take pictures both in 3D as well as 2D mode (the older console is only limited to taking pictures in 2D). An extra camera has also been provided on the 3DS bringing the total number of cameras to three. One of these cameras is an inward facing VGA camera useful for taking pictures of yourself during your gameplay.

Conclusions

There are still more differences between the DSi and 3DS than we have highlighted. However what the differences suggests so far is that every hardcore DS gamer needs to upgrade in order to enjoy the new features provided. On the other hand the Dsi is more suited for the casual DS gamer.
