Eric Flannum, the chief designer of Guild Wars 2, discussed all aspects of the game in an interview, from the world vs global patterns, occupational balance, PVP and PVE process and so on. Q: Do you have considered allowing the player free to choose the initial weapons when create character? Although the game is currently in a BETA stage, many players said that some ethnic initial weapon is not very suitable for the novice.
A: we have considered this issue and the result is that new players may choose inappropriate weapons which would lead their initial experience to much more complicate. Because we cannot guarantee that all options are equally simple for new players, so we decided to choose the best weapon we regarded for them. For this problem, we are still collecting feedback.
Q: what any ideas do you have on balance the number of players of WvW and PVE? You mentioned that there may be potential upper limit in each server WvW mode. Some players worry about the servers will appear to be locked on the peak time. Do you have any related plans and measures?
A: Some servers will certainly reach the maximum number. I think this is a real problem that players need to consider. The reason we set an upper limit in order to maintain the server running to prevent crashes.
Q: How to set empirical in the WvW? Players can get a wealth of experience by relying on defensive fortress, or in the field fighting to get little experience? Can you explain how to reward experience value in WvW?
A: The experience is basically as same as PVE. Kill the NPC, such as guards and monsters, explore new areas, collect resources, complete the event will gain experience. Players of the defensive fortress only need to participate in the defense events will be able to gain experience. In general, all the way to gain experience in PVE are available in WvW. Of course, kill the other players in WvW can gain experience bonus.
Q: As players reach the top Level, participate in more WvW, what’s the difference can player experience? We see a lot of difference and reward on the decoration, but no other types of things, such as equipment, manufacturing material and bonuses, etc.?
A: The role of WvW and PVE are same, in PVE, all the growth will be reflected in the WvW. For WvW, there is an exclusive weapons and armor suits, as well as some specific achievements and titles.
Q: we like to play Asura, and can you disclose when we are able to play the remaining two races: Asura and Sylvari?
A: We may open one of them in a BETA weekend test, but has not yet been determined, so I cannot tell you the details.
