Sports Games - Why They Are So Much Better Than They Used To Be

If you own your own computer or games console, you will know that there are many different games to choose from. One of the most popular genres is of course the sports game, whether it's a football management game, a racing game or a golf game, for example. So why are these sports games so popular right now?

Well there are a couple of reasons in my opinion. The first is because we now have so many more options in terms of multi-player gaming, thanks to the internet and modern technology.

Of course lots of games allow you to play against your friends online, but sports games really come into their own when you are competing against other (human) players. In the past you had to get your friends round and play against each other on your computer or games console, but now you can challenge your friends to a game from the comfort of your own home.

Plus the rise of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter has resulted in us having far larger groups of friends and contacts. So there is far more scope to organise a big gaming session with a large group of people.

For example if you are a fan of racing games, and you know several other people online who also enjoy playing the same games, you can arrange to race against each other in the same race in some instances. So this adds a whole new dimension to sports games and makes them far more enjoyable because it can get really boring playing against computer opponents all the time.

The second reason sports games are really popular right now is because they are evolving all the time and becoming more realistic and more lifelike with each new release. If you are a certain age, you will probably remember how sports games used to be on basic computers such as the Spectrum, Atari and Commodore 64.

They were a lot of fun but the graphics were poor, they took ages to load and the gameplay was fairly basic. In fact if today's younger generation could get a chance to play some of them, even the classics such as Striker and Outrun, they would probably laugh at how poor the graphics were and how simplistic they were.

Today's games are in a different league. They are faster, slicker and more interactive. I have already mentioned their multi-player compatibility, but apart from that they also have amazing graphics and in some instances the actual game is nearly as good, if not better, than playing the actual sport itself in real life.

So the point is that if you currently enjoy playing sports-based computer and video games, you should appreciate how lucky you are to be living in an age when the games are all so impressive compared to how they used to be. Pretty much everything about them is better, whether it's the sound, the graphics the gameplay or the multi-player capabilities, and I'm sure they are only going to improve in the coming years as well.
