The Saga of Race Upsetting Heroes – Onion, Pants on Fire and Sunday Silence

The Breeder’s Cup 2011 chariot of 15 races is fast approaching the Churchill Downs and while the best performers may have earned a position amongst the finalists, one can never banish the fears of an upsetting race from one of the less anticipated. Each contender must be equally feared and considered a threat to one’s victory.
That reminds of Onion, the 1969 colt that gave history its most cherished and startling upsets when he swept away the victory in the Whitney Handicap from right under the Triple Crown winner, Secretariat’s nose. This was not common.
It was Onion’s trainer, Allen Jerken’s assessment of the situation that he decided to put Onion against the dreaded and synonymous with winning, Secretariat. As the race set off, Onion maintained an early lead without letting go of the momentum at any time during the race; it may have been for the unfortunate bump along the rail that Secretariat lost his winning flair. He did chase the leading colt but he rarely went past him. Onion won the Whitney by a length. His victory against the invincible is still an argued fluke owing to the fact that he had never won a stakes before.
Quite much a recent event, the Louisiana Derby watched silently as Pants on Fire raced to upset a Mucho Macho Man’s race taking away the $1million prize money in a matter of minutes. Jockey Anna Napravnik who herself found this a rare occasion to believe, was well aware of Pant on Fire’s inabilities when compared to the better contenders like Nacho Business and Nehro. However, with Mucho Macho Man’s shoe falling off as he started and Nehro getting some advantage over him to pick up pace, cleared some field space for Pants on Fire to make it to the wire. Mucho Macho Man fought till the end with a foot injury finishing third in a race he could flawless glide to victory.
During the 115th Kentucky Derby, two extremely talented horses were competing for the trophy. The cold and windy day coupled with a muddy track posed quite a challenge to the favourite Easy Goer and the death eluder Sunday Silence. While Easy Goer was Alydar’s most impressive progeny, he was compared to Secretariat for his chestnut figure and thrusting racing style. Sunday Silence, on the other hand was a winner in all of his prior four starts, previously surviving two fatal incidences, one during an illness and the other an accident.
The start however was extremely challenging for both of them as Easy Goer was almost manoeuvred into unsteadiness by Northern Wolf while Sunday Silence bore the brunt of Faultless Ensign. Sunday Silence was soon guided by jockey Valenzuela into a 1 ½ lengths lead over Easy Goer that he maintained till he hit the wire. Easy Goer barely managed to get away from the pack but eventually lost. His stable mate Awe Inspiring finished third behind him.
