How to Play as Star Wars Battlefront Villains Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Emperor Palpatine

It's no good winning the Battlefront lottery and getting a villain power up if the first thing you do with Boba Fett and your new misplaced sense of confidence is jet-pack up to a gun turret and die almost immediately. This guide to the villains of Star Wars Battlefront will break down what abilities they have and what you need to do to get the most satisfaction - and dead rebel notches on your belt - from playing them.

What are Darth Vader’s Special Abilities?

You mean aside from his breathing now triggering a Pavlovian response of fear and/or excitement in everyone? Vader has the ever popular Force Choke move - which dangles an enemy in the air, clutching at their throat - and the Saber Throw and Heavy Strike with his lightsaber.

Vader is slower than other characters (he sweeps around doing a stately walk, with a kind of "Bring me all passengers, I want them alive!” gravitas) but he’s a heavy hitter. You can play him almost as a tank, getting in close and cutting down lots of troops at once to achieve objectives. It takes him a while to get there, though, so until you get in close you can use the Saber Throw and Force Choke, which both work at range. Vader can also use his lightsaber to deflect blaster shots and aim them back at the enemy with some precision, so he does have some versatility - but Vader isn’t really in the fight until he’s in the fight.

What are Boba Fett’s Special Abilities?

Boba Fett has a Flamethrower, a Jetpack (which will keep going as long as his fuel meter has something in it), and a Wrist Rocket, which may sound like an off brand sex toy but is in fact a high powered mid-range explosive missile. He also delivers threatening lines in a vaguely Australian accent, but that doesn’t seem to have any effect in game.

How to Play Effectively as Boba Fett

Boba Fett is probably the most mobile of the heroes and villains. His Jetpack ability means you can cover a huge range of the battlefield when playing as him, and you can fire your blaster from in the air. Because of this range of movement Boba is really good as a control character. You can use him to hustle enemies around and harry them on multiple fronts, cutting them off from objectives. Most of Boba’s attacks are ranged, so you can catch the rebels coming and going, but the key is still to keep moving - there are few things more satisfying than appearing from nowhere, sending a group running from your flamethrower, and then blasting off again before anyone’s managed to fire off a shot back at you.

Emperor Palpatine Guide - Star Wars Battlefront

What are Emperor Palpatine’s Special Abilities?

The Emperor rocks up on the battlefield with Chain Lightning, Force Dash, and Imperial Resources. Chain Lightning does what it says on the tin, Force Dash lets the Emperor cover ground on the battlefield or get away from trouble in a quite undignified leap, and with Imperial Resources he drops a resource token, like the most evil chicken laying the most evil egg you’ve ever seen.

How to Play Effectively as Emperor Palpatine

Look, Palpatine’s getting on a bit, bless him, and he’s not as spry as he used to be, so don’t get him in too close. He doesn’t have any effective close range or melee attacks, but his standard attack, Force Lightning, is mid range, and Chain Lightning extends this range as well as jumping to multiple enemies. Think of the Emperor as being like a high damage/low hitpoints magic user: effective at long and mid range, but too delicate to take up close and personal. Try and stick with a few troopers that have your back in case your back gets got, and remember to keep dropping the resource tokens whenever you can.
