This Mario Kart 8 Guide: All Coin Unlockables And What Do Coins Unlock lists all of the currently available karts and items unlocked via collecting coins and some basic tips and tricks to get a lot of coins much quicker. Most people know the basics of the coins, that were first introduced in Mario Kart 7, but for those of you new to the franchise, they do a little more than unlock cool things.
When racing collecting coins is key to victory. When you first pick up a single coin you get a tiny speed boost, perfect for getting your nose in front on that last lap. However, the coins also offer an accumulative speed boost – granting additional speed to your character for every coin you’re holding up to 10.
