The Witcher 2 Walkthrough Part 8: A Sword For Monsters & The Kayran: A Matter Of Price

Although A Sword For Monsters is technically a side mission, its completion should be your first priority upon being loosed in Flotsam because without a Silver Sword, you’ll be all but defenseless against monsters. For this reason, it is being included in the main quest walkthrough. If you imported a save from The Witcher, feel free to skip this section as the quest will be completed automatically because you will retain your Silver Sword from the original game.

If you looted the sparkling red chest on your ship when it docked in Flotsam, you should have received a diagram with instructions on how to craft a Witcher’s Robust Silver Sword. Once you are set loose in the town, you can visit any craftsman to build your sword. One blacksmith in particular will be able to craft you the best sword, however. Head out of the bar and back to the gallows. Facing the gallows, turn right and head down the path that slowly winds back through rows of houses, eventually turning to head back towards the entrance of the village. Tucked away at the end of this path is a blacksmith selling silver ore, which is rare. Take this opportunity to buy the silver ore. The other materials needed for your sword are common, and if you’ve been looting the crates up until this point you should have plenty of the necessary materials to craft a Silver Sword.

Now you’re ready to begin your hunt for the Kayran in earnest. Doing this involves completing three separate quests: The Kayran, The Kayran: A Matter Of Price, and The Kayran: Ostmurk. The easiest of those, and the first that you should pursue, is A Matter Of Price. From the blacksmith where you forged your Silver Sword, loop back around to the gallows. Along the way, look to the left and speak to the dwarf Einar. He will give you a book on Kayrans. From the gallows, turn straight back and head towards the entrance to the town. Right before leaving the town’s borders sits a group of merchants. Speak to the one clad in purple with thick glasses.

Tell him that Sile has enlisted your help in fighting the Kayran, and that because the number of contracts has doubled so too should the price. The merchant will balk at this notion, so it’ll be up to you to either persuade or intimidate him into compliance. Using Axii to persuade is the better option here because it will open up the ability to haggle with merchants later on.

A Matter Of Price is done for now, although after defeating the Kayran you’ll have to be sure to return to the merchant to collect your reward.
