In SSX, you will be racing down the nine deadly descents, mountains so dangerous that you’ll need special gear in order to even make it to the drop point. In order to make it that far, however, you’ll need experience, and that’s where you’ll spend the majority of the game – gaining experience by racing and tricking down some of the wildest slopes you’ve ever seen. The first thing you’ll see upon booting up the game is your rider, Zoe, getting ready to dive out of a helicopter. This sequence will serve as the air tricks tutorial. You will be asked to choose your preferred method of control. There are choices between using the button and the stick to pull off tricks. The buttons will correspond to directions on the right stick. Classic SSX controls can be activated in the pause menu. When you’re ready, nudge the left stick forward to begin your dive from the chopper.
Follow the button or stick prompts as you fall to learn about the different grabs, spins, flips, Tricky, and Super Tricky tricks that you can pull off. At the end of the tutorial, press RB to deploy your wing suit and glide safely to the ground. This will thrust you into the World Tour mode, in the Rockies. You will begin with only one character, Zoe. Select Whitehorn Mountain and choose the ground tutorial to continue with the tutorial. This mission will teach you the basics of carving down the mountain. Again, use the face buttons or the stick to pull off tricks. Hitting X or B while on the ground will perform Nose and Tail presses, respectively, and allow you to keep racking up points even as your board remains on the ground. This is a somewhat more advanced technique, though, so worry about getting a feel for the game’s movement controls before worrying about maintaining a combo. Just keep in mind that this functionality is there, and is very useful, later on in the game.
Use the A button to jump. Holding it down will allow you to jump higher, while using the left stick to preload your jumps will allow you to spin or slip faster, depending on which direction you held. Guide your boarder towards the red rails to automatically start a grind. There is no need to hold down a button like in past SSX games. Hold the face buttons and different directions while grinding to perform various grinding tricks and spins. You can also hold LT to grind along ridges and other surfaces that weren’t necessarily meant to be grinded along. If you crash, hit LB to rewind time and give it another go. You can also hold RT to activate a boost. Boosting is unlimited during Tricky mode. You will enter Tricky now. Hit the rails and boos up the walls for big and big points.
This just about does it for the tutorials. Keep grinding and using the walls and ramps to catch big air and you should be able to reach the ground with a large point total. Beating this tutorial event will unlock the Explore and Global Events modes.
