Xenoblade Chronicles Guide- Walkthrough Part 12.2: Local Monsters, Part 1

Colony 9 region Monsters:

Bunnit- Bunnit are creatures very much like extremely large rabbits- except that instead of a fluffy cotton tail they possess a long, prehensile three-fingered tail.  In combat they will use this to attack with, and they will sometimes be holding objects in the tail- usually a hunk of wood.

Bunnit are not very dangerous critters, but they will occasionally knock down a party member.  This is not a Topple effect, though, so the character gets right back up.

Colony 9 Region Varieties: Little Bunnit, Hand Bunnit

Skeeter- Skeeter are two to three foot long insects, resembling mosquitoes but with much less of a penchant for random biting.  They fly and move fairly quickly, but don’t demonstrate much in the way of special abilities.  They are also very fragile.

Skeeter are very low quality monsters, and once you complete the quest to kill some, you probably should just ignore them.

Colony 9 Region Varieties: Skeeter

Caterpile- Caterpile are bulky giant insects that resemble a cross between a caterpillar and a grub.  Slow-moving and fat, they aren’t terribly hazardous to anything but grass.

In combat, Caterpile are surprisingly threatening- most of those in the Colony 9 region are level 5 and up, and they have so many HP that it’s a bad idea to attack them with just a DPS character.  They have two special attacks- Caterpile Roll and Caterpile Acid.  Caterpile Roll is a dangerous, fast charging attack that can knock you down briefly.  Caterpile Acid is a ranged attack that is a bit slow, but still painful.  Because of these two attacks, escaping combat with them is difficult and dangerous- if you fight one and are in a dangerous position, running is probably a bad idea.

Colony 9 Region Varieties: Caterpile, Verdant Bluchel

Vang- Vang are giant bats with a wingspan of two to three feet.  Not very threatening on their own, they become much more dangerous if you get their attention while fighting something with an Ether attack such as Caterpile Acid.  Fortunately, they are fairly innocuous and mostly just wander around randomly.  Marginally more dangerous than Skeeter, they share the other flying animal’s frailty.  Vang only come out at night.

In combat, Vang are barely worth noticing on their own.  Though, they do have a special attack that will reduce your Ether Defence.  Fortunately, they have no Ether-based attack to take advantage of this with, nor do most of the other creatures near Colony 9.

Colony 9 Region Varieties: Little Vang

Antol- Antol are what you will see at night where there would be Caterpile during the day.  Two-foot-long ants, antol are equally innocuous, though they are nearly as fragile as Skeeter and lack the ranged and charging attacks of the giant caterpillars, making them far less hazardous.

In combat Antol are marginally more dangerous than Skeeters.  This is mostly because while they are only a tad more durable and don’t fly, they do have the ability to boost their own Strength.  This would be a lot more dangerous if they were actually durable- fortunately, they’re likely to lose more time to do damage in by using their boost than they can make up for with the increased attack power.
