Xenoblade Chronicles Guide- Walkthrough Part 92: The Main Pit Enemies

There’s nothing but Mechon in this pit- Mechon and machinery and ether, that is.  While most of these Mechon are ones you’ve seen before, the increased level actually brings them much closer in power to where your level is likely to be than almost anything you’ve seen since leaving Colony 9.  It’s not enough to make them individually dangerous, but these Mechon operate in groups, sometimes as many as five with a sixth flier lurking nearby.

Area: Central Pit
Monster Level : 19-25

Mechon- While this is mostly the same-old same-old, at least inasmuch as Mechon are same-old, there are a few new things here.  Some of them are mildly interesting, like the M67.  One of them is the M32 Transport- while its name makes it sound like it might carry around troops or other Mechon, this is actually just one of the smaller fliers with an ether lamp clutched in its grip, apparently to keep the Central Pit clearly lit.  Of the regular-sized Mechon, all of them are aggressive on sight, but only the M42 Scout is also a pack fighter, making groups that contain it slightly more threatening.  More significantly, the M82 is a fresh appearance.  This tall bipedal walker is high enough level that it will respond to the sight of even the most powerful parties, moving to Topple you and beat you down.  On the upside its offense is a bit lackluster for a ‘Large’ sized enemy, but on the downside its defenses are not.  Surprisingly, even with the use of Monado Enchant, it proves to be more enduring than even the Krabble you just left behind in the mine’s tunnels, and several instances of the M82 are located where time can be an issue, potentially leading to catching or missing a swinging arm of the main rig- whichever one is worse.

Despite this, the Mechon here should only delay you- if you aren’t at least level 27 by the time you reach this area you’re going to be in trouble soon and should instead hang around and squeeze out experience until you are.

More interesting than the combat behavior of the Mechon here is their default behavior- many of the low-slung M64X Mechon and some of the tall M67 are actually paying their attention to or guarding the Ether Deposits, making it clear that while the Mechon are occupying the mine, they are also using it, digging up Ether Crystals.  This brings up a number of questions- particularly since the Mechon are from the Mechonis, which for all you know so far, may very well not have ether at all in the first place.
