Skyrim Sidelines- Soljund's Sinkhole: Mining for Zombies
Over in Markarth Hold, the area South of Karthwasten is chock-full of Forsaken camps. In the process of avoiding these (most of them are near the rivers and their junctions), you're liable to come across a rather sparsely-populated mine: one guard and two miners, and nobody's going in or out with ore. This is Soljund's Sinkhole. As you approach, one of the miners here warns you that you shouldn't go in- ask and he'll tell you that the mine accidentally broke into an ancient Nordic burial mound, and has been occupied by draugr.
Being the zombie-slaying machine you are, you can feel free to consider this an opportunity for honing your battle skills.
Immediately inside the entrance, the mine takes a turn to the right. Ignore that for now and look left through a small passage- you'll see a room with a vein of moonstone set on the floor. Enter cautiously- two melee draugr lurk here on the ground level, with an archer guarding the catwalk over your head as you walk in. Your safest bet is to lure them out into the mine entrance, so you don't have to take several arrows while climbing up the various planks. With the draugr cleared out you can pick up a potion off the table at the bottom of the ramp, a book that grants you an additional rank in your Light Armor skill off the platform where the archer was malingering and three pieces of moonstone ore, and then you can cap it off by digging up the two veins of moonstone in the floor of the cave.
Now that you're done with the 'forward post', follow the main tunnel the other direction. After a couple of turns, you wil come to an upward slope that leads into a larger cave-like area. Here you'll find yourself at the lip of a large pit- but don't jump down immediately. First, look to your right for a vein of moonstone ore, important for anyone who favors Elven arms and armor.
Peer carefully into the pit and you can see that the fall is long enough to hurt- but there's a wooden post sticking out of the side of the hole. This is your ticket to landing softly- both for the sake of your ankles and for the sake of quiet. A careful descent or practiced jump will land you on the post, from which you can hear the draugr below stirring about. This is the point to make sure you've got everything ready, so set your Thu'um and prepare your weapons.
