Materials

Spinmetal

A filigree of bubbled metal grown by wild colonies of Golden Age cytoconstructors.

Spinmetal is a material found in Old Russia. Guardians can collect it on Patrols or during missions. It can also be bought from vendors in exchange for Marks, or be found in loot chests or as a reward for completing daily heroic missions. It’s required to upgrade weapons and armour.

Relic Iron

A post-Collapse material of extraordinary density.

Like Spinmetal, Relic Iron is an upgrade material exclusive to a planet, in this case, Mars. But it can also be bought from vendors in exchange for Vanguard or Crucible Marks.

Spirit Bloom

Shavings from flower-shaped crystals with pharmaceutical and chemical applications.

Spirit Bloom is an upgrade material primarily found on Venus. It can also be found in loot chests or purchased from Vanguards, as well as being a reward for Bounties.

Helium Filaments

Filaments of helium-3 fusion fuel, gathered from the lunar regolith by a helium coil.

Helium Filaments are upgrade materials found on the Moon, and can also be bought from vendors. Helium Filaments, Relic Iron and Spinmetal all have a capacity limit of 200 in a player’s inventory, before a new stack will be created.

Plasteel Plating

A durable hybrid plastic favoured by Titans for its balance of strength and workability

Plasteel Plating is used exclusively by Titans as an upgrade material. The only way to obtain it is to dismantle Titan armour.

Hadronic Essence

A dense lattice of exotic baryons and mesons, used as an infusion in Warlock fieldweave.

Hadronic Essence is an upgrade material that only Warlocks can use to improve their armour. It’s obtained through the dismantling of Warlock armour.

Sapphire Wire

A favourite of Hunters because of its versatility, this wire is incorporated into almost all Hunter gear

Sapphire Wire is used exclusively by Hunters as an upgrade material. It is obtained by dismantling Hunter armour.

Strange Coin

This unusual coin is warm to the touch and vibrates gently in your hand.

Strange Coins are one of Destiny’s currencies, and can be exchanged with Xur in exchange for rare items. There are two main ways to obtain Coins:

  • By completing weekly Heroic Strikes. The higher the difficulty you complete the Weekly Strike, the more Strange Coins are awarded to the player (9 maximum per character, per week.).
  • Completing Public Events, which are randomly generated during Patrols, can sometimes award Strange Coins when completed with a Gold Rating.

Weapon Parts

For weapon upgrades and repairs.

Pretty self-explanatory, but weapon parts are required for many upgrades for high level weapons. The rarer the weapon, the more weapon parts that will be required. By the same token, better weapons will yield more weapon parts when dismantled.

Ascendant Shard

A self-stabilizing knot of spacetime geometry.

Ascendant Shards are one of Destiny’s Legendary upgrade materials, used to upgrade Legendary armour. They can be obtained in multiple ways:

  • Random loot drops from completing Public Events.
  • Decoding Legendary Engrams.
  • Dismantling Legendary armour.
  • Completing daily Heroic Story missions.
  • Completing Crucible matches.
  • Faction package rewards
  • Loot Chests. (Very rare).

Ascendant Energy

[i]The boiling energies of the zero-point field trapped in a stasis capsule.Ascendant Energy is the second legendary upgrade material in Destiny, used to upgrade Legendary weapons. Ascendant Energy is is looted in the same was as Ascendant Shards.
