The 143rd Belmont Stakes is being run with a striking participation from the first seven Kentucky Derby winners, a scenario taking form for the first time ever in horse racing history.
It was late back in 1949 and 1950 that Belmont had witnessed the first five finishers running for the wire, Shackleford could be the first after Afleet Alex in 2005 to run a Preakness-Belmont pair, so does Animal Kingdom hope – becoming the first after Thunder Gulch in 1995 to run Belmont after Kentucky.
Quite a historic combination of events could take shape as Animal Kingdom, Nehro, Mucho Macho Man, Shackleford, Master of Hounds, Santiva and Brilliant Speed meet again for the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park for the $1million purse running the longest 1.5 mile dirt track.
Trainer Graham Motion’s Animal Kingdom is all geared up to set the Belmont tracks on fire after smashing the wire in 2:02.04, the Velazquez jockeyed 20-1 colt ran to victory at 2 ¾ lengths. Preakness wasn’t that sad too, closing at 3/4 lengths behind settling for a runner up finish. Team Animal Kingdom, better work on the pacing strategies to fix the blunders at Pimlico gates.
Nehro ran a runner up finish during the Kentucky Derby and has already been tagged as a ‘buzz’ horse which hasn’t gone down too well with trainer Asmussen owing to the history of all buzzed horses from Awesome Act to Ten Most Wanted, the ones that rose from the ashes and hitting the favorites too soon; not a good history to boast of.
Mucho Macho Man’s sixth place finish at the Pimlico grounds was a result of a lost shoe, the colt hit the second place at Churchill downs and a fastest five furlongs workout at Belmont on Sunday at a thunderous 59.57. Having given Animal Kingdom and Shackleford a run for their money in Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Derby, Mucho Macho Man may well be set to win the Belmont Stakes eventually.
Shackleford set an early fast pace of 22 seconds for the first quarter of a mile in the Preakness along with Flashpoint, winning the it with ¾ lengths lead over Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom. What followed as a disappointing fourth finish at Churchill Downs was now a victorious grin at Pimlico. Belmont Stakes sure looks like a tug of war for the two winners.
Master of Hounds, an Irish bred colt closed fifth in the Derby and stayed out for the Preakness. Does this break of a few weeks work in his favor; will be witnessed only when the gates open for the much anticipated third jewel of the Triple Crown.
Santiva and Brilliant Speed also ran the Derby at the sixth and seventh finishes and stayed off the Pimlico score boards resting and gearing up for the final leg of Triple Crown. The seven Derby top listers are now running for the eventual and final victory to seal the Crown contention.
