Hearthstone: Blowing the Dust off Trading Card Gameplay Mechanics

The folks at Blizzard are adding a brand new feature to their online card game Hearthstone. The developers got tired of the trading part in traditional trading card games (TCGs). The developers believe that the concept of trading cards can be somewhat stifling to the overall gameplay experience. Why? Well, mostly because the majority of players wants to get rare cards and get rid of common cards. But if everyone wants to collect the rarest cards, without giving them away, there isn’t much of a trade anymore, is there?

Therefore, Blizzard came up with a brand new gameplay system called Crafting. The developers want to assure that anyone can get (or rather craft) whatever card he wants. All you have to do is disenchant the cards you do not want to keep into a certain amount of Arcane Dust. The amount of Arcane Dust you receive for each card is determined by the rarity of the card. Cards are categorized into common, rare, epic, and legendary, which is signified by a colorful little oval gem in the middle of each card. 

You can use your Arcane Dust to craft the card you want. Obviously, the rarest cards require more magic dust than your run-of-the-mine cards. If you still haven’t figured out how Crafting works, check out the concise table below.

As if this wasn’t enough, you can also use Arcane Dust to turn your cards into neat golden versions. These will be even rarer than the regular designed cards and will feature animated art.
