Hearthstone: Quick Guide to Ranked Play

Hearthstone

Hearthstone

Hearthstone, as most of you might know, offers various game modes. First off, we have casual matches that give you a chance to test a new deck, class or strategy without having to face any consequences. Here, no one really cares if you win or lose - other than your ego, of course.

Then there’s the Arena mode which can be described as a build-and-battle way of going up against other players. You choose one out of three classes and create a deck with the cards you are given, possible legendary cards included. Last but not least, we now have ranked play in Hearthstone, also known as the way of competing against other players and moving up the regional highscore.

All possible Hearthstone ranks.

Much has changed in ranked gameplay during the free-to-play title’s closed beta; so much that we have decided to prepare a quick guide for anyone that’s either already playing Hearthstone or was thinking about joining the card game. You have the duration of an entire season (= one month) to join the best of the best and reach the legendary rank. Once the season is over, everyone is back to square one - in this case, it’s the Angry Chicken, the 25th rank. Winning against other players will grant you gold stars in this Hearthstone game mode. The more you collect, the further you advance.

Climbing up the ranks, one star at a time.

Here's everything you need to know about reaching the next rank:
  • Being victorious grants you a star; being defeated makes you lose one.
  • Streaks (consecutive wins) allow you to collect bonus stars.
  • Once you have reached a certain status, you can also lose ranks upon losing.
  • To ensure fair gameplay, you will always be matched with players of a similar rank.
  • Play the class you know best - ranked play counts for every deck.
  • Upon getting past Rank 1, you become a Legend. No, literally!
  • Entering the Legend bracket puts you into the best of the best category.
  • The number displayed then shows you how good you are compared to other players in your region.

Rewards

At this point in time, there are no rewards for participating in ranked play. According to Blizzard, these will be implemented when Hearthstone leaves open beta and launches later this year. So far, you can only get your hands on a Golden Hero when playing with a particular class in this free-to-play card game. Win 500 times with a certain character and voilà - you automatically unlock the golden hero skin. Stay tuned for more details on this particular game mode!
