World of Warships: How to Install a Mod

World of Warships has been available free-to-play for a while now, and an increasing number of gamers are starting to play the latest Wargaming title. Just like with World of Tanks, a modding community is growing around World of Warships, providing players with various quality of life and aesthetic mods to make their gaming experience more pleasant. Over the last few weeks I have seen more and more posts on the forums asking for help with installing these mods, so I thought I’d lay out a step-by-step guide to help new players that might be having some problems.

Step by Step Instructions

Once you’ve downloaded a mod from a reputable source, preferably the official Mods and Addons section of their forums, carefully follow these steps to make sure that you can install it without any risk of replacing the original file or completely breaking the game:

  • Find a mod that you’d like to install. There are a number of popular ones, but for this example we will be using this flag mod by Adiya from the official World of Warships forum.
  • Go to where in the res folder the original file is located that we are looking to replace. Our original flag file is in (World of Warships)\res\content\gameplay\common\flags.

World of Warships mod goes in here.

  • Just below the res folder is one conveniently named res_mods. Open this up, and you should see a numbered folder that corresponds to the patch that we are playing on. As of writing this, the patch is 0.4.0.4.
  • Here is the part you need to be careful with. Inside this 0.4.0.4 folder, you need to create an EXACT copy of the path where you would install the flag in the res folder. So for this example it would be res_mods\content\gameplay\common\flags.
  • Almost there! Finally, we need to replace the paths.xml in parent World of Warships folder. A lot of modders include this file in their mod packs, but just in case they don’t, it needs to be edited as follows:

This method ensures that we safely install our mod without compromising any of the original game files. This is the best way to install mods for people worried about breaking anything, as all of the original files stay completely intact (except for paths.xml).

I hope this guide helps some of you, and if you have any questions then drop us a comment below.
