World of Warships Aiming Guide

World of Warships Aiming Guide

So you’ve just jumped into a game of World of Warships, excited about the news that the official release of the free-to-play game is just around the corner, and you’re not really sure what to do.

The basics of the game are fairly straightforward; you choose a ship, use WASD to move around, and left-click to fire. Aiming, however, isn’t always as intuitive. Don’t worry yourself too much though, because that’s where we come in and give you a helping have to land those shells and penetrate some hulls!

General Aiming Tips

I know, this one seems pretty obvious, but in reality it’s slightly more complicated that you’d initially think. Not only do you have to think about the distance that the shells disperse over long distances, but also the part of the ship that you want to hit. First let’s talk about the missile spread.

If you’re parallel with an enemy vessel, unless you’re aiming for a specific target on the ship, you’re going to want to align your horizontal crosshair with the top of their hull. Have a look at the picture below if you’re confused as to where I mean. If you aim there, it is better than aiming at the waterline, as half of the dispersion circle of the shells will be in the water. You don’t sink ships by hitting the water.

What to Aim For

Each ship has a number of high priority targets called Citadels. The citadels tend to be parts of the ship that contains propulsion units, communication systems, weapons, and ammo stores. If you look at the icon that appears when you hit a citadel, it crudely shows where these are located in most ships.

As a general rule, you’re going to try to aim for a location that’s underneath the smoke stacks, and underneath the turrets, as this is where the fuel and the ammunition is located. These places are usually the hardest areas to penetrate as they are protected by thick armor, but if you can hit one of these areas with armor piercing shells, then it’s possible to get instant kills on ships. Take a look at the simple diagram below to see what I mean. The blue areas are where the ammo is kept, and the red is the fuel and propulsion mechanism.

Blue Indicates Ammo, Red for Fuel and Propulsion
