Alphabear - Tips, Tricks, and Strategies to Bear All That You Can Bear

[Can't decide if you can bear all that spelling? Check out our Alphabear review.]

Alphabear is a cool little spelling game that’s almost as habit-forming as its older sibling, Tripletown. That said, it can be a bit tricky at times. That’s why we’ve put together a little something that should help with wrangling those bears.

The Basics

  • Pay attention to your bears’ abilities - Different bears do different things, such as increase your score multiplier at the end of a game or giving bonus points for specific words. Some will even increase the likelihood of certain letters appearing. Keep all of these factors in mind when choosing which three bears you equip.
  • Doubles are good when it comes to bears - Normally it’s kind of a pain when you earn a new item in a game only to find out it’s something you already have, but here it’s a good thing. Any bears you earn that you already have will end up increasing the abilities of that bear, making them even more helpful.
  • You don’t always have to wait for Honey to refill - Usually you’ll only get a couple of games in before you have to wait for your Honey meter to go back up and be able to play again, however you can also use the coins you earn for finishing a challenge to refill your meter. Just tap on the Honey icon at the top-left of the screen and pick the last menu option.
  • Watch videos - Watching videos to earn more Honey is an option as well. Just tap the Honey icon and select the first option, which is to watch a video, and you’ll earn 50 Honey. You can stockpile up to 300 extra Honey a day using this approach.
  • Don’t waste all your coins on Honey refills - Sure it’s tempting to get a quick refill, and it’s not like you can’t earn more coins, but once you’re able to take part in treasure challenges you’ll want to have some left. These special challenges given you an increased chance at earning rare bears, and shouldn’t be passed up.

Words is the Word

  • Mind the letter timers - Every time you make a letter, the little countdown timer on each of the remaining letters will tick down. If this number hits 0, that letter tile will turn to stone - becoming useless as well as ruining your chances at making one big screen-filling bear.
  • Don’t just focus on low-numbered letters - Having some letters turn to stone is a pain, but you actually earn more points for using letters that have more time left. Sometimes it’s in your best interest to ignore a couple of 2s for one more turn in favor of a higher score.
  • Pay attention to where letters are, not just what they are - Letter placement is almost as important as the spelling. Clearing out letters will create new ones, which will in turn expand the play area and give you more to work with (along with more to worry about). The location of the letters you clear will also have an effect on the size and shape of your bears, and bigger bears means more points at the end of the challenge.
  • Don’t expand too fast if you don’t have to - I know it’s tempting to pull out huge words from the get go and finish fast, but unless you’re playing a timed game it’s better to expand slowly at first. It gives you more time to plan your words out because there won’t be as many timers to worry about, and it will give you more control over your bears.
  • Use as many bears as possible all the time - The maximum number of bears you can use in a game is three, so use three whenever you can. More bears means more score multipliers and more word/letter bonuses. And all of that stuff means more points, which means you’re more likely to get a high enough score to nab a gold bear egg.
