If so, this is definitely a game for you. Based on the hit movies Despicable Me, Gameloft has released a brand new game in a log stream of endless runner games. The aim of the game is to safely run through various areas as the best minion of all – Dave, whilst collecting bananas and avoid running into dangerous objects in the runway.
With the recent explosion of endless runners in the App Store, it’s pretty awesome to find one that is so well polished and fun as this game. The gameplay is a lot of fun to work your way through and it also looks great itself.
Currently, Despicable Me: Minion Rush is running version 2.6.2 and requires your device to be running at least iOS version 6.0 or later. Whilst most bugs have been ironed out in earlier updates, please remember to report any bugs you do encounter to the developers via Twitter, Facebook or by email, this way, the problem will most likely be taken note of and fixed in a future update. Currently there are a variety of hacks around, however they require you to have a jail broken iDevice, this hack offers a completely free store where you can buy literally everything without having to use your precious tokens. Although, if you would prefer to play through the game legitimately, check out my tips and tricks to help you get through the game.
First of all, the most obvious thing I would advise when it comes to this game is to just collect literally as many bananas as you possibly can. Quite a few of the minion upgrades can be bought with bananas, so you’ll want to hold on your bananas for some of the better ones that can really give you an advantage whilst running through the course.
If you’re not against spending a little money on the game, I would advise you to get the Golden Banana, this will give you twice as many bananas as you collect, more bananas means that you wont have to spent as much time collecting in order to get that specific thing you’ve been saving for.
If you have a Facebook, I highly suggest linking your game up to your account, not only will you be able to challenge and taunt your friends; you also get rewarded with Gru tokens just for linking your account. Every day that you do connect to Facebook, you will be rewarded with a Gru token, this is pretty cool, especially considering how hard these are to come by.
As you get more into the game and are able to travel further, you’ll notice that you’ll start coming across special bonus items which can be used to help you along a little bit. To power up these special items, go on over to the main menu where they can be activated with small portions of your bananas, some can get expensive though, so make your choice wisely. For example, if the level you are about to run is challenging you to destroy ice sheets, you will probably want to power up the freeze ray, this will make the challenge so much easier and you make it through the game a whole lot faster. Just pay attention to your challenges as these will usually give you hints on what, if any, power up to use.
If you find yourself feeling unsure about which power up you ought to use, there are a couple of power ups that I like to think of as being always useful, so I advise you to consider either the banana splitter or the fluffy unicorn, you cannot go wrong with these two. More bananas, more upgrades.
Because of the fact that you have an infinite number of runs in the game, getting a really high score doesn’t really do much other than boost your highest score, really all you need to concentrate on doing is collecting the required fruit, if you keep on going after that, it’s up to you, but don’t spend any of your tokens on reviving if you die, you have the required items to move on to the next level, so do that.
If you manage to die before getting the relevant fruit, don’t even bother spending tokens on that either, just restart the run, you’ll most likely get the required fruit on you second run any way, so unless you’re having the worst time making it through a run, just start over from the beginning. Although, with the new mode of play that is Jelly Labs, the majority of the challenges can typically be completed in one run unless you’re really terrible at the game. So choose your upgrades and costumes widely as these can sometimes make or break a level.
While you are running through Gru’s Lab area, keep your eye out for an area where a trail of bananas lead off the track and down a pipe, if you go down here when you see it, you’ll find a special bonus area known as the disco room.
If you hit the setting button in the game then the little present button, you’ll come a cross a gift code area where you can put in certain combinations of minions in order to receive gifts. To receive a free baby minion, the code is ordinary minion, fireman minion then baby minion. For a banana perk of a 5x multiplier put in baby minion, fireman minion then maid minion. To get the loser taunt, put in maid minion, ordinary minion then golf minion. For the 3x minion launcher, put in beach minion, fireman minion then mustache minion. For a bonus bunch of bananas, put in gold minion, beach minion then mustache minion. These special codes are still all working as I have just tried them all out and received all of the gifts. To find any other codes, try googling minion rush gift codes. If there are any you find that we haven’t mentioned here, just post them in the comments.
You work your way through the game by controlling Dave as he makes his way along a seemingly infinite course, swipe him from lane to lane in order to ensure his safety. In the game there are three different areas that Dave will make his way through; El Macho’s lair, Gru’s hideout and the neighborhood. As you make your way through these areas, your job is to make sure that Dave keeps on running whilst also making sure he doesn’t run into any painful obstacles, whilst simultaneously trying to collect as many bananas as you possibly can. To make the game a little different from other endless runners, the actual lanes that you’re running in switch themselves up quite often, sometime disappearing, forcing you to bounce on a lane jumper, they may even lead you to secret areas.
Along with the main game, there are also mini games which definitely keep the game interesting, ensuring that should you get bored with the main part of the game, there are still options that keep you playing the game. One game features a battle between you and any of Gru’s nefarious nemeses, you must dodge robot who are trying to attack you whilst defending yourself with bombs. Another game has you flying through the air on a huge fluffy unicorn as you steer by tilting your device side to side, collecting bananas as you go. These smaller games can be very fun and provide you with a good change in the pace of the main gain, although the do revela the games weakest point; jerky and unresponsive controls. Whilst the swiping from lane to lane part of the game is fairly simple and there are no problems, but when tilting gets brought into the equation, collecting extra bananas whilst avoiding deadly falls can feel a little pointless, since you know you’re not going to last very long anyway.
The biggest flaw in this game though, is the overpriced in app purchases. While bananas can be used to upgrade a few of the less powerful power ups, you have to either purchase or the collect the elusive Gru tokens to get to the good stuff. Every day you play the game, you have the chance to earn a few Gru tokens and you can ever earn up to three hundred and eighty token by managing to complete all of the in game achievements. Unfortunately, even the cheapest of all the special costumes still costs five hundred and fifty tokens, which equates to over $5 if you were to actually buy the tokens. These days, premium currency never seems to go as far as it used to.
Artwork: I give Despicable Me: Minion Rush a 9/10 for its artwork. The artwork in this game actually stays pretty true to that of the movies which is definitely something I can appreciate, especially as a lover of the movies. Sure, it can get a little buggy at time, but otherwise, the game looks pristine. The running areas have been designed beautifully, I especially love the bonus disco room which looks amazing.
Music and SFX: I give the game an 8/10 for music and SFX. I do love hearing the minion language in this game; it is something I always loved about the movies, so seeing a game dedicated to just the minions and their funny little sounds is just awesome. The music is definitely upbeat and really provides the game with a nice sense of flow as you run like a madman through various locales.
Story and Originality: I give the game an 8/10 for story and originality. Ilove that this game added so many new ideas to the genre. That is my biggest admiration when it comes to most games these days, adding something new to a genre is so greta because it is contributing to the future of the games in that specific genre. It gives a sense of the developers actually wanting to make a good and fun game rather than just making an almost carbon copy of every other endless runner out there. I love the fact that it even has a story at the beginning, you just end up feeling so bad for poor Dave, he wanted that minion of the month award so badly! The fact that there is a story continues to provide it with a nice flow and a reason for playing.
General Gameplay: I give the game 7/10 for its general gameplay. I’ll admit that when I I first started playing this game; I was torn between wanting to play it and wanting to get rid of it. I did encounter quite a few issues with the game freezing on me mid run and ending up crashing into obstacles and ending my run. That was seriously very frustrating. I [persevered though as I do love those little minions so. The problem s I had didn’t happen as often as I played the game more, but when they did happen I would get very mad at the game. I would love to see this bug fixed as I know I’d probably enjoy this game so much more then.
Addictiveness: I give the game a 9/10 for its addictiveness. I probably would have rated this a ten if there weren’t problems with occasional freezing and crashing. The fact that you can run infinitely is awesome and I love that there is even other options for when you do need a break from the main game. I still get to play with my little minions without the frustration of crashing into stuff. I would love to play this game once the bugs have been fixed s I have a feeling that I’d never leave that app.
Overall, I give Despicable Me: Minion Rush an 8/10. Fix those issues and let’s see if we can get that up a bit more!
