Godzilla: Strike Zone is a game developed by Legendry studios and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. You might have noticed something here that many of the games developed by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. are based upon movies, their movies. The one thing they should be credited for is that the games they develop gives beautiful representation of their movies, of course if the game is based upon one. One can consider Edge of tomorrow or 300: Seize the Glory, people who had played these games especially after watching their respective movies might know what I’m talking about, these games follows their movie, fully makes use of movie’s environment and gives you the feeling that you are a part of the movie. Godzilla: Strike Zone is no different. It is a cross platform game, available for iOS, Android and PC too. To play on computer you have to browse through their official website as the game is available for online play and uses Unity web player.
Godzilla is a name which is not new to anyone, a name roaming around the planet for more than Sixty years and after hearing this name, the first thing that comes in mind is Destruction. Godzilla: Strike Zone was released just 10 days prior to its movie. This game can rightfully be called a preview of movie just made for promotion purposes. If you haven’t seen the movie and you want to watch, then go watch the movie first because this game and review will spoil few precious moments of the movie. The game, so do the movie, is setup in San Francisco that is completely destroyed by Godzilla. This game will take you through one of the movie’s action packed scene. In this game you have to rescue people before they are stepped upon by Godzilla. Movie is bit different than the game because in movie you have to find lost weapon instead of saving people.
Although, I was surprised by the minimal data size of the Godzilla: Strike Zone but my hopes were still high before I ran the game. I wasn’t expecting this game to be lengthy but at least something of figurehead. It just took me 20 minutes to finish the game, let us call it 1200 seconds so that it might give the feeling of the game being a bit longer which I wanted it to be after finishing the game. No doubt, the game is short but that doesn’t mean that it’s not good. Its action packed 3D intensive graphics together with one of the best sound effects I have heard will give you and your mobile phone a run for its money.
You might be sitting at home playing Godzilla: Strike Zone, and if you are, then you have noticed how important health, speed, and ammo are for the game. You’ll start off as Ford Brody who is travelling into San Francisco with his squad in a fighter helicopter. This game consists of three missions, just three and after that the game will tell you when the movie was supposed to and released. The first mission is called Halo Jump. This mission starts with the only human voice that you will hear in the game saying
“Gentleman you are being send in by a Halo Jump I know many of you have family and loved ones still in the city that you want to help this is your chance”
Then you will jump off the helicopter with your teammates, everyone holding red flares in their hand. While you are making your way down to the surface, you have to make sure that you don’t collide with your teammates and to control yourself in the air you will use gyro sensor. The graphics were impressive but the gyro controls were hectic, I went straight to settings, hopping to change the controls to touchscreen, but found out that you cannot change the controls except sensitivity. Don’t be sad you’ll reach near the buildings and cross Godzilla’s head after few tries. Later your parachute will open up and the second part of this mission will start. Now you have to dodge yourself from crashing into buildings and the control sensitivity will again lead you down but the graphics and sound effects will amaze you.
As you reach the ground the second mission called Ground Rescue will start. The game will switch to FPS mode. The controls will keep you wondering for a while because there isn’t much of guidance available. In this mission you’ll use your gun couple of times not to shoot Godzilla but to interact with things and blow up the bomb, you will also run away from Godzilla and jump through debris and electrocuted water, then rescue people and shoot your flare gun in the air to call the helicopter and mission will end when the rescued people get on board.
The third mission is called Onto the Rooftops. It’s hardly any different than second mission with just new jumping tasks. You will rescue people from the Rooftops and again helicopter will take them away. As the helicopter will fly away the Godzilla will kick in and you will have to get off the rooftop. Reaching ground from the Rooftop is tricky and you might have to give it few more tries. Then you will run away from the Godzilla dodging and cross jumping few cars to reach to another helicopter to save you. Although the things does get a bit illogical over here and you will ask yourself that the developers could have got you boarded over the previous helicopter but why they didn’t. I think we should just leave it and enjoy the way the third mission ended with the Godzilla closing in and I’ll give the developers credit for the amazing ending with roaring Godzilla coming extremely close to the helicopter. For once you will feel that the Godzilla will attack but you’ll be disappointed because it will not and you will be disappointed even more to know that the game ends here.
There are no cheat codes available for this game. And the game is too short for tricks. Crossing the first mission is only the difficult part of the game. The trick to succeed in the first mission is that instead of staying in the middle of the screen move towards one of the corners and the probability of collision will decrease making it easier to complete the mission.
Controls: I’ll give Godzilla: Strike Zone 5/10 for its controls. If you have experience with mobile first-person shooting games you will know that FPS on touchscreen is tough and you will get used to controls of this game in less time. You have to drag on the left side of the screen to walk forward, backward and strafe from side to side, dragging on right side of the screen will help you adjust your aim. When you want to fire you have to take your thumb of the analog and press the fire button, while you are firing you cannot change the aim unlike Modern Combat 4. The other button is for jump. These controls does look like many other FPS game but the fact is that the controls were awful, calibration and controlling the gyro in the first mission was problematic. There was no guidance available for FPS mode in second mission. Gun was the only mode of every interaction, accurate aiming was extremely difficult they could have helped in aiming by using semi-automatic mode like the one they used in Edge of tomorrow. Maybe they didn’t focus on the control because the game was short and there wasn’t enough gun fight?
Gameplay: Godzilla: Strike Zone gets a moderate 6/10 here. The gameplay is good if not great but the game is too much short, offering merely three missions namely Halo Jump, Ground Rescue, and Onto the Rooftops. At moments I wanted the game to last longer but the gameplay is plagued by poor controls; which would have made it difficult to proceed in the game if it was longer. There are few goofs like how is it possible to jump cross a rolling car? Why Ford Brody had to wait for another helicopter to save him while he could have gone with the first one? Only if the developers were here to answer it. Another issue is that you cannot shoot anything other than highlighted stuff, the gun will not even shoot if its aim is not properly set on the highlighted target.
Game’s Artwork: This game gets 7/10 here from me. The graphics is one of the key attractions of this game. They aren’t good as Tegra titles and/or Modern Combat 4 but this game isn’t far from them. You will feel your mobile getting warm and older mobile phones will struggle. The atmosphere is overall great, intense and dark just like the movie. The buildings, cars and debris are well rendered. The Godzilla looked terrific especially with the fog all around it.
Music & SFX: The spectacular sound system of Godzilla: Strike zone gets 8.5/10. The best thing in this game is sound effects, they are just WoW! They are one of the best I have heard till now. The sound covers all the flaws of the game and will keep you in the game. All the terror that this game will put in your mind is through sound effects it uses. Roars of Godzilla and M.U.T.O will make you attentive and mentally prepares you to face and fight them, which you will not in this game. These music effects are just too good for a game which is free.
Story & Originality: This short story line gets 6/10. As already mentioned previously that this game is short with just tree missions. You are a part of military squad who are on a mission of rescuing people don’t forget rescuing without fighting anything. Godzilla: Strike Zone could have improved itself over here by adding more missions, fighting M.U.T.O and/or Godzilla but considering that this game was meant to be a preview or a demo of the movie it’s decent enough.
Addictiveness: The weakest link of the game gets 4/10. Godzilla: Strike Zone is not at all addictive, you might play it for 2 or 3 times but after that you’ll run straight into your setting just to uninstall it. This game has no scoring system to cross, no time attack to beat, no online play nothing which will force you to play it again.
Conclusion: Overall Godzilla: Strike Zone get 6.5/10. For once this game does gives you few good moments especially considering that it’s a free game. Only if there were more missions, more interaction with Godzilla and less troubling controls the game would have been more joy to play.
