With complicated and infinitely variable combinations for the blocks on the signature grid, there is tons of replay value built into the game. While Kiragames Co., Ltd. could have leveraged the amount of possible levels and gated the content behind “level packs”, all content is available completely free of charge to players. Considering that there are literally thousands of levels, it’s admirable that this company sought out other ways to monetize their product without providing consumers with a limited version of the game.
The controls are simple, and menus extremely well designed. The advertisements that Kiragames Co., Ltd. Relies on to support the game’s development are generally unobtrusive, and for an extremely small one time transaction you can remove these ads permanently. Hints – the other way Kiragames Co., Ltd. makes money from the game – are fairly priced and also completely unnecessary to fully enjoy the game. In fact, I’d say using hints kind of defeats the purpose of a puzzle game, and the feeling of frustration from being stuck on a level can be avoided by simply selecting another level to play. From the very beginning, players have access to the entire game and can pick and choose puzzles as they please.
However, even if players feel the need to use hints, they’re obtainable by watching sponsor ads instead of real money.
While many mobile games have a great concept and even great gameplay, I find that the potential can be completely squandered when invasive monetization comes in. It’s understandable that the studio wants to maximize profits, but delivering a less polished product and allowing consumers to pay to minimize the integrated annoyance is not the right way to go about it. Kiragames Co., Ltd. made a game loved by millions around the world, and are seeing that – despite the current mindset of major publishers – you can be profitable without milking your customers dry.
In my opinion, Unblock Me Free epitomizes what mobile games should be. Though there are certainly mobile games that offer a hardcore adventure typical of console games, the majority of mobile gamers are casual media consumers that play when they have a few minutes of downtime. Unblock Me Free strikes the perfect balance of enjoyment with low time commitments backed up by a wealth of content that affords fans the opportunity to enjoy themselves for hours at a time without the hindrance of paywalls or pesky timers.
Artwork: What little artwork is required by a simple puzzle game was executed flawlessly. Both the game and menu navigation are beautifully and professionally illustrated. Rating: 10/10
Music / Sound Effects: Though poor music and sound effects can completely ruin my opinion of a game, I’m surprised to say I found the complete lack of music in Unblock Me Free a little disappointing. The sound effects when moving blocks and completing a level are well designed, but some nice music would have made the experience a little more complete. Rating: 2/10
Story / Originality: There is no story to the game, and while I’m unable to comment on whether Unblock Me Free was the first puzzle game of its kind, the excellent and polished gameplay combined with Kiragames Co., Ltd.’s refreshing approach to monetization makes this title stand out from the rest. Rating: 6/10
General Gameplay: Gameplay is simple to pick up but difficult to master. The near limitless amount of puzzles provides hundreds of hours of enjoyable gameplay. Rating: 10/10
Addictiveness: I hate not being able to finish a level in a game, and that experience came up pretty frequently in Unblock Me Free. The desire to figure out a solution to the puzzle and test myself on progressively difficult challenges really keeps me coming back for more. I continued to play this game for hours longer than I originally intended. Rating: 10/10
Overall Rating: While Unblock Me Free is not unique in having supremely enjoyable puzzle gameplay, the combination of this enjoyment with the mass amount of free content available and non-intrusive monetization give this game the perfect trifecta. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a good puzzle – you definitely won’t be disappointed. Rating: 9/10
