As the name suggests, Heroes of destiny is an action based RPG where you lead a group of 4 heroes as they battle against a multiplicity of monsters and demons in a magical medieval setting. Within this kingdom your warriors are like knights, working for the kingdom to keep the peace.

There are four different types of heroes to choose from; the head on attack warrior, the long distance archer, the magician or mage, and the healer. Each unit has a specific function that helps you to defeat your enemies, knowing how to use them together is the key strategic aspect of Heroes of destiny.

You begin with one hero but as you progress in Heroes of destiny, you have the option of purchasing the services, or hiring, other heroes to fight alongside you. Successive gameplay leads to points which can be used to level up your hero.

There are three levels to upgrading and each has its own perks. Level 1 is “Hero” here you have access to the common items and your skill points are at the trainer level. The next level, Elite, is unlocked at level 5 and reaching this level unlocks the uncommon items. Beyond the intermediate Elite level, and the highest level attainable, is “Epic” which is unlocked at level 10. Epic unlocks rare items and comes with many more special skills.

Although the action moves are awesome to look at, you won’t survive many battles without knowing how to effectively heal yourself. The Healer is one of your few defensive options in Heroes of destiny, so make sure you know how to use them well. To heal your healer draw a small circle that starts and ends at her location.

For most of the gameplay use your healer to assist your tank character as they will be enduring the most damage considering they’re the only character involved in direct hand to hand combat. Obviously you’ll want your mage/ magician as well as your archer at a safe yet combat effective range. When you first start out it’s sufficient to have one healer in your crew but I’ve found that for especially difficult missions rather than upgrading your offensive equipment, having two healers can prove to be a much more cost effective, and battle effective, solution. This is especially helpful for boss missions.

Starting out in Heroes of Destiny, don’t concern yourself unnecessarily with the size of your team. Generally speaking you won’t need to have 4 characters in your squad until level 15. Also even as a beginner you should make it a priority to upgrade your gear as often as possible even seemingly minor upgrades can be the difference between victory and defeat. Don’t make the common, and frankly careless, mistake of leaving the battlefield with unclaimed treasure and gold left behind. It’s easy to forget a bag or two every now and then if you’re overly eager to get to the next battle, but over time these can add up to major losses for you and your team of heroes.

If you’re a beginner to Heroes of Destiny, fret not, you can have some of the awesome items you see on higher level players. By simply signing in daily you can receive epic and legendary items as well as many other prizes and gifts. There are also weekly missions and quests that can be played with special prizes associated with those.

Lastly, your beginning equipment which is appropriately known as junk equipment, may seem worthless but it can be quickly upgraded and made extremely powerful if you have a little patience and know how.

Review

I really enjoyed Heroes of Destiny until I hit the inevitable price ceiling where I couldn’t advance beyond the contents of my wallet. Heroes of Destiny is a massive file which put quite a bit of strain on my smartphone, leading to several crashes and glitches. Furthermore, although gameplay was relatively simple and straightforward, the upgrading of characters and their respective skills made no logical sense and it took me a really long time to understand what equipment corresponded to which hero. Hopefully Glu Mobile will find a more intuitive and straightforward means of organizing this aspect of Heroes of Destiny.

Artwork 10/10
Artwork was vibrant and stunning. Careful attention was paid to the smallest details. Each environment was rich and vivid, also the color scheme added to medieval atmosphere they were clearly trying to cultivate.

Sound/ Special Effects 9/10
Sound and special effects were masterfully woven together. Each game and environment had its own sounds and special effects which were suitable to the actions of the users and what was going on in the story. This is impressive considering there wasn’t a vast array of music.

Story/ Originality 5/10
Fairly cliché storyline with generic character, nothing I haven’t seen before.

Gameplay 7/10
Gameplay was easy to understand and intuitive. Within five minutes of gameplay I had already mastered the general controls and navigation. 2 points deducted for the insanely complex apparel upgrading and character upgrading, hopefully this is resolved in a future update.

Addictiveness 6/10
This is obviously a very popular game but unless you’re willing to shell out a fair amount of money I don’t see addictions going beyond the intermediate level of gameplay. This is frustrating for free players but for premium players who don’t mind the occasional buck for a gaming experience they like, Heroes of Destiny, can be incredibly addicting.
