The game lays down a very simple concept for the player, when they first begin. You have the four basic elements: Air, Fire, Land and Water. Starting with only these elements, you will have to create the whole universe and all the things in it. There are over 336 possible combinations in the game, so there is always some point to experimentation.

The gameplay of Doodle Alchemy is also just as simple as its concept. You have the book of elements, which shows all of your already discovered elements and you also have the alchemy table on top of it, where you will have to place two elements to combine. For example if you combine Air + Fire, you will get Energy. From then on, your book will show Energy as a possible element and you can use it in your future experiments. Like if you want to create Life, you will have to add Energy + Swamp. The list just goes on and on, until you find out all 336 elements.

The game randomly and sometimes at specific times provides you with hints, which can be used to make the game automatically combine two elements that can will a new one. You can look at it like a free pass, when you are stuck.

While in app purchases are not found anywhere in Doodle Alchemy, it features ads of various types. The game has a static ad at the bottom of the screen, which will not disappear once it’s there. Though sometimes this ad might not be present when you start up the game, it will appear after a while. There are also full screen pop in ads, which will randomly distract you and you will have to exit out of them to continue the game.

Doodle Alchemy Review

The gameplay in Doodle Alchemy is very simple, so there were really no surprises waiting for me. I have played the other Doodle games before, like Doodle God and Doodle Devil, so I felt pretty much at home in this game.

Starting off with the four basic elements, I began my journey, which lasted for a hour or so until I ran out of hints and found as many elements as I could. There are always new combinations, but when I had more than a 70 elements unlocked, it became somewhat tiresome to try again and again.

The main reason why it tired me was the slowness of the gameplay. I have no idea why they made it this way, but changing pages in the book and putting elements on the alchemy table is unbelievably slow. In a game like this, where you’ll be trying new combinations all the time, the unneeded pause these effects cause is really annoying. I’m talking about seconds here, but seconds matter a lot in this type of game.

The plus is that looking past these problems, the gameplay is actually fun. It also provides free hints at times, which is very welcome, although I found the amount of them to still be a little too low.

Overall I enjoyed the game for a while, but after reaching a certain amount of unlocked elements, it becomes somewhat of a chore. Still, if you are interested in this type of game, then give it a go, it’s free.

Ratings

Artwork: I will give the artwork in Doodle Alchemy a 9/10. This game’s style and presentation is just beautiful. The menus, the loading screen and the gameplay itself all look stylish and unique, with high quality textures everywhere.

Music & SFX: The music in this game gets an 8/10. The game has only one track of music, which is reminiscent of fantasy tales, making it very fitting to the experience. The lack of variety in music is not really a problem in this simple game. The SFX is limited to short, mediocre sounds when creating elements and the sound of paper. Really nothing to say about that.

Story & Originality: The story in Doodle Alchemy deserves a 6/10. While in no way Doodle Alchemy is the first to use this of idea of creating the universe from the basic elements, it’s an idea that’s not overused yet. Still, there is no way I could call it original.

General Gameplay: The general gameplay gets a 5/10 from me. If you can look past how slow the game reacts to putting elements onto the alchemy table, changing pages in the book or just generally doing anything, the gameplay itself is fun. There is a lot of guesswork after a while, because not all solutions might make that much sense as one would expect. The sad thing is that as you unlock more and more elements, the game becomes a chore, since figuring out new ones will be much harder and will take a lot of time.

Addictiveness: The addictiveness of the game gets a 5/10. While the game will make you want to experiment and find out more and more elements, the slowness of the gameplay and the immense amount of trial and error later on will be enough to make people become tired of it. If only the gameplay could be sped up and made more intuitive, that could help a lot. The high number of ads might also turn some people off of the game.
