Running Shadow is an endless runner which is similar to other apps such as Temple Run, but with an added dash of danger and a customizable, upgradeable character. The story starts off with you, a lone thief, stealing a powerful ritual gauntlet from an ancient Cult of Death. If you can escape without being caught or killed, the Fraternity will accept you into their ranks. The Fraternity is a group of highly-skilled, elite thieves that take on jobs in return for payment. There may be further political or cult aspects to the Fraternity, but such motives are hidden from all but the highest ranking members of this group. The Fraternity provides tasks for the “shadows” that make up the organization which allows both the player and the Fraternity to profit. If you make it in, the Fraternity will be your source of missions.

To play Running Shadow, all you need is a quick hand, a watchful eye, and razor-sharp reflexes. Your character will be running along trap-strewn paths in enemy fortresses, rooftops, or any of the other various stages within Running Shadow. Whenever an obstacle or enemy blocks your path, you must use the correct swipe gesture to clear the obstacle, or anticipate the movement of the enemy to avoid his attack and stage your own counterattack. Luckily for us, we have a guide that helps us know what to do; this guide manifests in a partially transparent arrow that displays the direction in which we need to swipe. The only factor left up to you is timing your moves correctly so you pull off your evasion at the right moment. Failing to avoid an obstacle or enemy will result in bodily harm or death, depending on the severity of the obstacle and the amount of health you have remaining. Upon death, you have two options; you can resurrect yourself with coins, or you can exit the level and try again.

As you begin to make substantial progress in Running Shadow, the Fraternity will reveal several new evasion techniques to aid you in your missions. The first evasion technique you will learn is called “Mountain Stream”; this is a special flip combo that allows you to cross two obstacles that are placed very close together. The potential to perform these techniques will be marked with a rainbow-colored marking on the floor, which alerts you to the opportunity far in advance. If you decide to take that route, you will receive on-screen guidance (as with normal obstacles) once your character is over the rainbow marking. These techniques are very useful once you gain access to more difficult levels, and let’s be honest here; who doesn’t find it satisfying to perform a triple backwards flip, or do some wall-running every now and again?

In Running Shadow, you have the ability to upgrade the equipment that your character carries in exchange for gold coins. These coins are gained from completing missions or spending money on IAP (In-App Purchases). I find that completing missions offers enough gold coins to last me through the game, but some special items and offers within Running Shadow will require large amounts of coins which can only be obtained by long, hard work, or IAP (in which case IAP may prove to be the best course of action). The purpose of upgrading your items is to ensure that you can avoid as many obstacles as possible and defeat the enemies you may face. If you find out too late that your opponent is far stronger than you are, you’ll be killed on the spot. Most regular missions won’t contain enemies that you won’t be prepared for, but if you want to rob other player’s fortresses, you’ll likely face very strong resistance.

As well as providing “story missions”, Running Shadow gives you the option to create defenses in your house against enemy players who may wish to rob you. The defenses you install will cost money to upgrade and maintain, but it is a worthy investment as you will often find yourself missing some money each time you log in. When you believe your house is as well defended as possible, you’ll also have the ability to rob other players of their ill-gained loot. Stealing from thieves doesn’t count as theft, right? Well, maybe it does, but the option is still there if you want to take advantage of it.

Running Shadow Cheats and Tips

Special Ability Prompts- As with every other aspect of Running Shadow, timing is absolutely vital, but even more so for your advanced evasion techniques. If you wish to rack up the highest scores and fill your personal coffers, special abilities will be your best friend. If you manage to time your special ability perfectly, you will gain a fairly substantial amount of bonus coins, which you would miss out on if you fail to perform the ability or simply pass it by. For example, a perfect execution of Mountain Stream will gain you an extra 1,000 points, which will convert into a sum of gold coins at the end of the mission. Never pass up a special ability prompt again!

Choose Your Battles– Avoiding conflict at all costs can sometimes be in your best interests. You just picked up a special mission item and you have 15 hp left with half a mission to go? Swerve away from as many guards and obstacles as you can; if you absolutely need to stay alive, avoiding traps, guards, and obstacles eliminates the risk of accidentally making a mis-swipe, which could kill you outright. Play it smart, and you’ll soon reap the benefits.

Collect Your Rewards– I often end up cursing myself for ignoring the mission sidebar and forgetting to pick up my rewards. Once you finish a mission, the reward may not end up in your coffers automatically, which could lead to confusion and frustration. To save yourself a bit of hair-pulling and gnashing of teeth later on, make a habit of checking the mission sidebar after you come back from each heist. You should see a few bubbles on the left of your screen, on the town interface, and some of the bubbles will probably say, “collect reward!”. Make sure to tap these bubbles to collect the coins you are owed.

Passive Income- Are you finding that you’re often broke? Go ahead and check out your “house upgrades”; the button for this menu will be at the bottom of your screen while you’re currently in the town interface. Once you open the house menu, there should be a house upgrade button in the top-left corner. The first upgrade will provide you with 5 gold coins every hour, which is worth more than it sounds. These coins make a bigger difference in your personal finances than you may initially think, so make sure to consider this option when you have the means to do so.

Running Shadow Review

While many things can be said about Running shadow, I don’t think any statement is more accurate than saying that Running Shadow is best described as a beefed-up version of Temple Run. Yes, Temple Run and Running Shadow are both very similar, but I believe that Running Shadow brings depth to the original concept of mobile “endless runners” which the Temple Run team failed to achieve. Not only are you free to travel on several different tracks or make turns at intersections, but you’re able to compete with other players, create a personal fortress, arm yourself with frightfully dangerous weapons, and even follow the unique storyline featured in Running Shadow! All of these aspects combined creates an interactive endless runner that can captivate and entertain any gamer for extended amounts of time. This truly is a wonderful achievement, especially for a relatively simple endless runner!

The only downsides to Running Shadow is the fact that the coins are hard to come by, the special costumes are realistically only available via IAP, and I find that Running Shadow can be a bit laggy at inconvenient times. While the first few objections are easily overlooked, I find the lag to be especially disappointing, considering the fact that timing is very important in Running Shadow. The lag could very well be due to my device, however, so this is more of a caution to users rather than a point that will detract from my overall view of Running Shadow.

Ratings

Artwork– Running Shadow definitely has an interesting art style, and it has a certain “Renaissance era” type of feel to it. The only issue I hold with the artwork is the extremely low quality definition. The cutscene animations are out of sync with the SFX, and the characters/items look blocky and blurry. Artwork scores a 6/10.

Music/SFX- The music and sound effects in Running Shadow do a great job of creating the feeling of being “on edge”, but the SFX often don’t match up with the actions you make in the game (½ second or so behind), and the cutscenes are out of sync with the SFX by at least one full second. Music/SFX gets a rating of 7/10.

Story/Originality- While Running Shadow seems like a Temple Run rip-off at first glance, you will soon see that there are far more interesting and intricate details, which turns Running Shadow into a fairly complex gaming experience rather than a simple time-waster like Temple Run. The story in Running Shadow is completely original, and adds a significant level of enjoyment to the game. Story/Originality receives a 9/10.

General Gameplay– I’ve enjoyed playing Running Shadow very much, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the sheer amount of content, which is not something I expected from an endless runner. Running Shadow is best played in short intervals, but it’s still fun, albeit slightly repetitive, when played for hours on end. General Gameplay gets an 8.5/10.

Addictiveness- While Running shadow is very fun, I often find myself having to take breaks every half an hour or so, simply because I don’t want to over-play Running Shadow and make it lose its appeal. While it is very entertaining and fairly addictive, Running Shadow isn’t geared towards constant gameplay. That being said, I still feel the need to return to the game three or four times a day to rob a house or two. Addictiveness scores an 8/10.

Overall, Running Shadow deserves a rating of 7.5/10.
