Unlike many other apps, Treasure Diving is almost more of a point and click adventure rather than a action, puzzle, or any other genre of mobile game. You will be led through a tutorial by your dive instructor, who will teach you how to perform the basic actions and how to complete tasks. Most tasks are very simple, and only require a single tap of the finger. Need to cut some seaweed? Just tap a plant and wait for your diver to finish the task! The end goal of finding all of the treasure is to find every item in certain lists, or “collections”. There is a semi-precious stone collection, a gold collection, a pearl collection, and many other collections that need to be completed, so get digging! Completing missions will gain you rewards, so make sure to complete as many missions as you can.

You will have a “home” base where you can harvest materials, create items with your resources, or travel to other reefs and wrecks. At your base, you’ll also have access to your Submarine, a Deepwater Module, a Treasure Gallery, and an old Fishing Dock. Each object has a specific function that will help you accomplish your missions; for example, the Deepwater Module is like an underwater “Crafting Bench” that can create various objects from raw materials. The Submarine can be upgraded to allow access to more areas of the map, which also gives you access to more tasks to complete. If you wish to increase your productivity while grinding away and harvesting resources, simply tap each resource you want to harvest in sequential order, and they should acquire a green outline; this means that the task has been queued. When your diver completes his or her current task, the next task in the queue will automatically receive the attention of your diver. This cheat is a great way to maximize productivity and speed up parts of the game that can be slightly monotonous.

Banishing Sea Creatures– Remember how I mentioned that some of the practices in Treasure Diving don’t seem very environmentally friendly? Every once in a while, and octopus might decide to float along and block your access to certain resources in the area. The only way to be able to access those resources is by tapping the octopus, which prompts your character to pull out a baseball bat and start cracking the octopus over the head with it. You’ll have to repeat this process about 4 times before he goes away, unless one of your attacks misses, in which case you’ll have to try again.

Treasure Diving Review

Of the many games I’ve played on the app store, none of them are quite as strange as Treasure Diving. Don’t get me wrong, strange isn’t bad; strangeness in games often leaves me feeling a bit confused and very amused. For example, I totally understand the need to add mild conflict to video games, but smacking octopi with baseball bats? I almost feel guilty laughing at that, but it still gets me every time!

I also get the feeling that Treasure Diving may not be a game marketed and created for adults or older children, but aimed at pleasing younger gamers, let’s say 10 and under. That being said, Treasure Diving is fun for everyone, whether you’re 5 or 95. Alien-looking, strange, underwater landscapes are vivid enough to capture anybody’s attention, and some of the fun characters you’ll interact with seem to be heavily inspired by certain modern-day movie releases. Anybody with an active imagination and good sense of humor can enjoy the goofy fun in Treasure Diving!

The only complaint I have with Treasure Diving is the NPC script. You can tell that whoever wrote the script doesn’t have the strongest grasp on the English language, although admittedly this doesn’t really hamper your gameplay in the slightest. You can still easily understand the intent and subject of the scripting, but you might get this weird feeling that the script was written with an online translator.

Overall, Treasure Diving is a fun adventure that you can carry around in your pocket, and at no cost to you whatsoever. Whether you plan on downloading it for yourself, or for your children or younger siblings, Treasure Diving will be sure to entertain. To get into the mood, I once decided to partake in a bit of seaweed before playing Treasure Diving; this really made the experience feel a bit more immersive, strangely enough. I can’t recommend Treasure Diving enough; it really is a cool little time waster which is easy on the wallet and fun for all ages.

Artwork– Fun, vivid, and cartoon-like are a couple descriptions that could define the artwork in Treasure Diving. If you like playing bright, uplifting games, then Treasure Diving is definitely for you.

Artwork receives a rating of 10/10.

Music/SFX– Treasure Diving’s soundtrack is, at times, akin to a soothing lullaby, but occasionally changes tracks and plays an uplifting, “tropical” tune complete. I haven’t noticed any jarring breaks between the soundtrack loops, which is a definitely plus. The SFX aren’t annoying or obnoxious in any way, and some of the noises are slightly ASMR inducing, which is a massive plus.

Music/SFX receives a rating of 10/10.

Story/Originality– The story in Treasure Diving is pretty weak, and slightly muddled at times; this is a result of the shoddy translation work I mentioned earlier. The originality in this game is also somewhat lacking, but there are a few unique features added into the app that other exploration type games don’t have, such as leveling up to unlock new areas to explore, or creating tools to aid in your exploration.

Story/Originality receives a rating of 6/10.

General Gameplay– While the storyline is somewhat unclear, Treasure Diving still manages to save itself with the visual and aural brain-candy it provides. The slightly confusing nature of the game is forgivable, and no matter what criticism I make of Treasure Diving, I still have a blast whenever I play it. Because of this, the General Gameplay category deserves a high rating.

General Gameplay deserves a rating of 9/10.

Addictiveness– Treasure Diving doesn’t provide the addictive draw that some other mobile games may have, but I still like to return to it from time to time. Addictiveness receives a rating of 6/10.
