Bloons TD Battles is a Strategy game developed by ninja kiwi, a publisher of the “More Awesomer” company which is known for other games such as SAS: Zombie Assault, Battle for the Galaxy or Bloons Monkey City. The game is available on both Android and Apple and it has been downloaded for more than 10 million times. It has an average rating of 4.3 out of 5 on Google Play and 4 and a half stars from a maximum of 5 on Apple’s App Store. In order to run at optimal parameters, it is required for Android users to have an Android version of at least 2.3.3, and for Apple users, iOS 6.0 or later.
This game called Bloons TD Battles is not about taking roles or names. For those of you unfamiliar with the world TD – it means Tower Defense. So, basically, the game is a battle arena where you defend your base from evil balloons (bloons) with the help of different towers. Usually, this genre is one-sided meaning that you will only have to survive for as long as possible in an offline mode. However, in Bloons TD Battles you face real opponents and you can send your very own Bloons to destroy their base.
The game doesn’t require a mandatory sign-up and you don’t have to register with any account. However, if you are an Android user at least, you need to have Google Play Services installed and updated so you can face online other opponents. Because of the Google Play Services login requirement, you will not lose any data (mostly your unlocked towers) in case of changing your device or, for some reason, uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.
Games like Bloons TD Battles usually don’t have microtransactions implemented, but we have an exception here. You can buy all sort of stuff if you want to spend real money. The game’s currency is called Medallions and it is gained as a proof of your dominance in battles – however, you can always buy some of it for $1.99 or more. After I decided to review Bloons TD Battles I reached a sad conclusion. I am so old that I played the first ever Tower Defense. Fortunately, I played it 10 years after its release so I am not THAT old. Tower Defenses were always one of my favorite sub-genres of RTSs because these games are much simpler but challenging enough at the same time. With this being said, I must admit that Bloons TD Battles is really solid. Good TD gameplay combined with live multiplayer – what more could you wish for?
The thing I like the most about Bloons TD Battles, is obviously the fact that the game is entirely multiplayer. And that multiplayer is really good. You have different game modes such as Arenas (with different layouts), Assaults and even mods where you need to defend yourself. I also think that the game’s towers and bloons are balanced so there isn’t a winning tactic. In addition to this and because there are dozens of different towers and bloons, you will not encounter two players with the same exact tactic so, Bloons TD Battles is anything but repetitive.
Like always, there are some things I would change about Bloons TD Battles as well. The biggest issue the game currently has, in my opinion, is the fact that if two players who are relatively at the same level, will play for a long time. The game duration tends to be way too long in my opinion. I believe that some other modes such as “Blitz Attack” where you have only 10 lives or so, would be a great benefit for Bloons TD Battle. I also think that you need a more comprehensive guide about Towers and their Power-Ups and what each Bloon does. There is some info, that’s true, but you need more. A “Bloon-pedia” option in the menu would be great because you will not be forced to research if you don’t want to.
I believe that there is a problem with the way the game handles the prizes if one of the users lose connection (by mistake or not). This may be a bug or an intentionally omission but I feel that I should point it out anyway – each of the player gets the medallions they would get for a win but at the same time they will get a Defeat in their record. This can annoy players and it can be also exploited.
Overall, Bloons TD Battles is a game I would most likely recommend. It is not clearly that you will like it if you are not a fan of TDs but the game is fun, entertaining and it looks good so it deserves at least a try. If you are a fan of the genre, you will love it.

Artwork: Bloons TD Battles gets a rating of 8 out of 10 for its artwork. The game’s theme is mainly about monkeys and how deadly they can be with the right equipment. Everything about Bloons TD Battles is really colorful and cartoonish but that’s just the way the game was designed. There isn’t anything special about the environment and the few but different maps you can play on. The character design is nice and pretty detailed (the monkeys will change their costume when you upgrade them) but nothing more and the balloons come in various colors and sizes. Everything about the game’s artwork is above average and the rating reflects that.
Music & SFX: The game gets a rating of 7 out of 10 at this section. The music and the sound effects are definitely the weakest part of Bloons TD Battles. The soundtrack is relatively interesting but it doesn’t match with the game’s theme and it is pretty boring if you ask me. I expected a lot more challenging songs to “get an adrenaline rush” (or something like that). The sound effects are also dull and they don’t stand out in any way. Well, at least the game has a few of them.
Story/Originality: Bloons TD Battles gets a rating of 8 out of 10 at this segment. As you probably have already guessed this is not the first TD. And it is not the first TD with a “monkeys with darts” theme. However, this is not necessarily a big issue as long as the game has a lot of original elements. Fortunately, Bloons TD Battles has many of them. The TD subgenre of Strategy games is the one that usually doesn’t have a background story so it is not surprising that Bloons TD Battles hasn’t got one either.
General Gameplay: The game gets a rating of 9 out of 10 for its gameplay. Bloons TD Battles can be really overwhelming if you are not used with TDs. You have a tutorial that covers the basics but that’s not enough. As I mentioned in the Review, you need to do some research by yourself if you want to “survive” in the game. Having a Practice mode is a really good thing so you should check that out. I really like the controls and the way the game reacts – there are no delays or whatsoever. The multiplayer implementation is also flawless – no problems with the connection, fast and balanced matchmaking. For the time I’ve played I haven’t encountered any bugs, freezes or crashes with Bloons TD Battles.
Addictiveness: Bloons TD Battles gets a rating of 10 out of 10 at this section. I don’t agree with the most reviews out there, I really believe that this game is very addictive. There is a huge fan base that continuously creates tactics and makes builds that agrees with me. Bloons TD Battles is not addictive because of the usual elements such as a good story or a natural character progression. It is addictive because of the great multiplayer implementation. This game “solves” the TDs biggest problem – after you learn the pattern, you will have no problem in finishing the TD and you will naturally get bored of it and move on to the next. Here, you face other players and that can’t get boring.
Bloons TD Battles gets an overall rating of 8.4 out of 10. One of the best TDs I’ve played in a long time and, for the last time, it is a multiplayer title. There will be no surprise if the game stays in the tops for a long time.
