But they will also want toys, so you have to get those from the shop as well. Toys can vary greatly: there are bouncy balls in different colors, balls of yarn, boxes, pillows, cushions, cooling mats, kitty tents and countless others! Some of these items can be purchased with the basic currency of fish, while rare items might cost the premium currency of gold fish.
Now, once you set up your backyard, you will soon find that cats start moving in at random times, starting with Snowball, the pretty white kitty, who is happy to play with bouncy balls. Once a cat has arrived, he or she will remain there for one or two hours, playing with one of the toys you put out, then they will go on their way again and another kitty might take their place! The game managed to recreate this feeling in an interesting way, as in the game I don’t own any cats, yet they keep showing up to my virtual backyard, having fun, then moving on.
After setting up my backyard with a bouncy ball, a pillow, a box for the cats to play in and some Thrifty Bitz, I was ready for my first visitors. Snowball was the first one to arrive, and he has played with the red bouncy ball for two hours, then decided to move on. When I opened the game for the next time, I was met with a tortoiseshell colored kitten, named Bandit, who took control of the box, looking ferocious, yet cute at the same time.
Honestly, this extremely simple game got me hooked, and I don’t know why exactly! There is something charming about Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector, with its simple gameplay that can be played in short bursts, yet it’s always exciting to find new kitties in the backyard. If you like cats and want a little timewaster app for 2016, then this might be just what you need!

Artwork: The artwork of Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector deserves a 6/10 rating. The game uses a typical handdrawn, old-ish japanese cartoon artstyle, which is either a hit or miss. You will either love it or hate it, but its certainly not a game that tries too hard with its visuals.
Music & SFX: The music and SFX of the game gets an 8/10. To be entirely honest, the simple repeating music of this game is nothing special, and it could never stand out in a more serious game. Surprisingly, it still works pretty great in this title, as you will only check on it every few hours for one or two minutes, and this peaceful tune perfectly accomodates these short bursts of gameplay. The SFX are almost non-existent, except for button press noises, so there’s not much to say about that.
Story & Originality: I give the originality of Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector a 9/10. There are countless tamagochi copies and pet simulation games out there, but this game decides to take it easy and create a peaceful, stressless experience instead. As you don’t really feel forced to check on the game every hour, you can even go days without opening the app, yet will still find a random cat in the end to make you smile!
General Gameplay: The general gameplay gets an 8/10. Honestly, there isn’t much of a traditional gameplay here, as you don’t really interact with the cats or the game, except for taking photos, buying stuff and moving around menus. Still, this casual experience can be really relaxing, especially after a hard day, when you just want to sit down and take a quick glance at what kind of cute kitty showed up to your virtual backyard!
Addictiveness: The addictiveness of the game deserves an 9/10 as well. I can easily imagine any cat fanatic to keep checking this game daily, expanding the backyard and purchasing new toys for these grateful little kittens. There is also a lot of photos and mementos to collect, as well as Catbooks to unlock to keep you interested for a long time!
