Can Mario beat sonic

There has been a lot of to and fro on this question, most of it irrelevant. It has been distilled to the following:

In a fight? No. Sonic would spin dash Mario's head off before he had time to blink, let alone use a mushroom or star.

Even though i like sonic, he can't beat mario.

Basically that's both sides of the argument.
