How do you defeat deadwood in drawn to life

There are two stages to this boss level. For the first one, use your acorn gun thing and shoot the pine cone looking things that can be found hanging from some of the platforms. For some you have to jump, then shoot. There are oocasional earthquakes that deadwood produces which make you fall to the ground. To avoid this, just keep pressing the jump button. Next you will go inside deadwood. You have to kill the black moving monster that is flying. Don't touch the things that poke out from the side. You can shoot them but they will not help decrease the boss health bar and they will regrow anyway.
