On gears of war 2 what does being host mean

In Gears of War and Gears of War 2 the host is normally the player with the best connection, and all the other players are synchronized with that connection, because the host has the main connection they are lag free thus making them be able to almost be 10 seconds ahead of the competition. Some go to the length that the host can dealt more damage then the average player and has more health.
