Why are there video game ratings

Back in the past, when Mortal Kmbat was released, a kid's dad was mad and made ESRB ratings because of Mortal Kombat's violence and not so mild blood. If Mortal Kombat (which is a mad awesome game by the way) wasn't sold, then we probably wouldn't have ESRB ratings at all.
