ok...so basically, say your friend is person A and you are person B. someone tells you to pick the "lamp" while A is away across the room or something. You call him over and say "Is it the bowl?" "No." "Is is the banana?" "No." "Is it the couch?" "No." "How about the fork?" "Yes." Is this the situation that always happens? Well, its really simple. The couch would have been black. That is why it is called "black magic", because you are giving your friend a heads up that the object is coming by picking something black right before it.
