What is ONET OnLine
What is ONET OnLine
ONET online is the electronic replacement for the paper published DOT (Dictionary of Occupational Titles) that is published by the Federal government. Like the DOT, the ONET is a database that contains well researched job descriptions and other job information for jobs that exist in the United States (both government and private). These jobs are grouped by occupation. However, ONET online uses larger, broader occupational groupings than the DOT and tends to describe work characteristics common to an occupational grouping rather than a specific single job. As with the DOT, ONET online is intended to contain all the jobs that exist in the United States (government and private). However, jobs can evolve in a relatively short amount of time, and with the DOT, it was impossible to stay up-to-date. The ONET online is a tool that can be revised and updated more instantly than publishing a new edition of the DOT. Therefore, consumers can readily have current job information as it becomes available. Additionally, ONET online is able to provide a fuller range of job information, such as specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other characteristics (KSAOs) and worker requirements.
