Your friend probably has LG's cinema 3D. It uses cinema 3D technology from two decades back and works by splitting the image lines to left and right eye. The result is an effective resolution of a mere 540 lines compared to the 1080 lines of other 3D models. Compare this to the standard definition 576 lines and it is clear that it is not full HD when in 3D mode.

Look instead to Samsung, Sony and other big names to get full HD.
