Who is Silver the hedgehog or Mario

Mario should be clear. He's the star of Super Mario Brothers, and Nintendo's Mascot. Silver is a lil' more complex. He's a character from the Sonic games, his debut game being the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog for the XBOX 360 and PS3. I'm a lil' shaky on the details, but he seems to be a future traveller, looking for the Iblis Trigger, probably to destroy it or something.
